Title: help on making horns to wear?
Post by: kala83 on October 15, 2010, 05:50:38 PM
so I want to make some horns for me to wear out at faire and maybe even try selling some at some point I think I heard someone say you can use sculpy I guess you would just need to make sure you put the holes in first before baking the stuff....so that the cord can go through...what kind of cord is usually good.
if you all know any places that have tutorials so I can just see different techiques of other people I think that would be really helpful too.

Sculpy or fimo is great. I like fimo better personally but they both take quite a bit of working before they get soft and easy to shape. Holes are a must before baking, OR you can glue those silver clippies to the bottom after baking and not have to worry about the sting. If you go to your local JoAnns or Michaels in the jewelry section there will be an area that has string and such for beading necklaces and there will be a clear one Ill link below. Its nice cause it blends in but it also has a tiny bit of stretch so it is usually the perfect size and comfortable but not so much that it slips. You can do the double knot on the string where you turn it in a circle and not it at two places  so when you pull the knotts it tightens (does that make any sense?) I cant find any videos on how to make them but shaping will pretty much just be you. For a really basic one you can make a ball of fimo and roll it in your hand with the sides of your one hand close together so it makes a cone, flip it up and smash the fat end on a flat surface so it sits on the head easier. If you make the cone long you can twist it like a ran or unicorn but its just going to take some playing with to do.I do ceramics so i have something called a needle tool that i use to make holes but you can use a small screwdriver to make the holes. Hope that helped it was a bit rambly  ;D

I used elastic on my horns.  When I bought them they came with a thicker cord but my hair is so fine & thin that I had a lump going around my head.  I cut elastic to fit perfectly around my head, fed it thru the holes in the horns and sewed it closed.  It works great for me.
