Title: 10 things I learned at TRF
Post by: dfloyd888 on October 17, 2010, 08:25:31 PM
1:  A Holiday Inn Express at Todd Mission would make a killing.  It would be nice to have a decent chain nearby.  Since my camping stuff (all of it) got completely

2:  People actually get falling over drunk in the lanes at 11:00 in the morning.  To me, it almost takes expertise to get that sloshed less than two hours after opening cannon.

3:  When carrying helms, it sometimes comes in handy to stick one on ye old noggin to free up hands.

4:  Thorin mead.  Something I wish I were able to buy some bottles of to take home.

5:  If a patron gets a glassy eyed stare while talking and starts gurgling, get behind the individual ASAP, and make sure you are out of spatter range.

6:  I need to see about hitting the King's Feast.

7:  There are TRF vendors which actually serve ice tea.  This rocks, as I don't really drink (although I'll knock back a cup or two of something worth it), I don't like soft drinks (liquid candy), and water... meh, boring.

8:  Patron campgrounds have all sorts of strange things going on.

9:  I need to see about taking someone to the King's Feast that I know, but finding someone is sort of like Paris's Apple, so if I do get people, I'll just roll a 20 sided die to figure out who goes with me.

10:  I think I'm going to see about a set of leather armor to go with one of my helms.

11:  I need to see about taking a Monday off so I can do some serious hanging around and not worry about the drive back to Austin late at night.

The King's Feast is great.  Hey don't I know you? hehe

I agree you need Monday's off to recoup.  I try my best to get Monday off of work every time I go.

Now THAT is a maxim of truth there. Insert any Faire for TRF there, and it should be part of the Rennie Gospel, LOL.

I was at TRF this past sunday, and it has been a busy week since between work and class, so have not been able to wash my car yet, a coworker (who also loves TRF) came up to me yesterday and asked "did you go to ren fest?" i replied "yes i did" (thinking "how does she know?") then she said "i can tell by the dirt on your car."  :D

10. No matter how great your checklist is, and how many times you go over it, there is always something new and different to forget. Did you pack the toilet paper? Did you? You did? Check again. Trust me.
9. Morgana usually has whatever it is you forgot.
8. You usually have whatever it is Morgana forgot.
7. If another camp is bigger and "eats" your camp, they are really wonderful people who will become lifelong friends.
6. Total strangers will offer to fix your broken garb while you're still wearing it, and neither of you will think that it's weird.
5. You will eventually offer to walk total strangers halfway around the campgrounds because "I'm going there anyway. Sort of. Well, not really, but who cares?!"
4. Familiarize yourself with anything that's new or has changed inside TRF. 'Danes will ask you for directions and you don't want to mislead them. By accident, anyway.
3. You *will* run into someone you know in your mundane life. You *will not* have seen them in many years. It *will* happen while your best friend is eating kettle corn out of your cleavage because the parade kettle corn guy dumped it there and "We don't want to *waste* it!"
2. Make sure that the picture of Captain Biff at the Wonky Wally grabbing your boob is *not* included in the slideshow you share with your grandparents. *They* will be amused, but *you* will not.
1. Calculate your expenses thoroughly for Friday through Monday, including any tickets you haven't bought yet, food, booze, any shopping you might do, etc. Check your calculations. Now bring twice that.

10. Two full bottles of Loki per person is needed for a proper walkabout. One for you and one to share.
9. I can go through on full bottle of Loki in one circle around the campgrounds.
8. Never use the stakes that came with the tent.
7. Bring fire ant killer every weekend.
6. Set up the tent BEFORE you start drinking...unless you just spent most of the night waiting outside the gates...
5. Nap as much as you can on Friday! (Haven't really been able to do that in the past few years.)
4. Know who the lightweights are so you can avoid the puke points.
3. If it's raining when you get to camp wait it out in the car...unless of course you're cramped in the car...if that's the case set up the tent as fast as you can between the storm.
2. Have a flashlight...find the drunk traps and avoid them...No flashlight...find the drunk traps with your knees...shin...toe...neck...
1. If you have extra food, Thursday night , Friday all day, or Monday morning...a good yell will bring people running to you.  ;D

1. Battery-heated socks and silk thermals are worth every. single. penny.
2. Just when you think you have all the garb you'll ever need....
3. Safety pins and spare laces are your friends.Same applies to backup garb pieces.
4. There's nothing like a fresh change of underpinnings after a brutally hot day to change your whole outlook on life.
5. Dress in layers; it's possible to freeze and roast in the same day.
6. Rennies sun themselves like lizards on chilly days.
7. Put sunscreen where the sun don't shine, 'cause it do.
8. Take my own advice, see #7.
9. It is possible for someone to be so oblivious that they blunder into the arse-end of a 6-foot tall, 1800-pound live horse.

Bring a lizard that can sleep in your tent and eat the flies when your buddies forget to close the tent.

If the temp is anywhere below 65 folks will ask you if you're cold in your kilt!?!

"I got 21 feet of wool wrapped around my butt, how are those jeans treating you?"

Memory foam pillows turn into rocks in cold weather.

No matter how many layers of blankets/sleeping bags/clothes you have under you, over you, and on you, its still extremely difficult to stay warm in 35 degree weather.

There are some people in the campgrounds who think they own the place and can push around whoever they like.

You can wander the grounds all day and not run into a single member of this forum.   :P  (Actually, I have to correct myself, Martin found us!)

You can definitely run into the one's who are trapped, working in their shops.  Finding the one's who are prowling around on the loose may not be so easy...

1. Thorin mead can be bought by the bottle and taken home ;)

Oh wow, which shop sells that?

I got it at the The Wonkey Wally

Far as I know, Wonkey Wally, Sea Devil Tavern and I think Prince of Wales.
Its also available at Enchanted Manor Winery.  The mead-master has been working very hard to get it carried elsewhere.  I know for sure that it will be at Sherwood.

Someday, I HAVE to meet you. After three years, I still haven't met you. We're gonna make it happen eventually!

If a lass forewarns you on a Sunday at Faire that she's not had a shower, it's best not to proceed in nibblin' her neck.

Amazingly, "How I got to Wal-Mart" is a Homeric Epic Poem (and just as looooong!)

Rennies are generous and giving folk - if your hands are empty on campgrounds, it's your own fault

It is possible to get a standing ovation when you emerge from "someone's" tent

"Cajun roulette" involves several sweet bottles of Loki and one bottle of moonshine

If y' drink from William the Traveler's flask of EverCrown - 'tis best t' fake th' first swig and modestly sip th' second (he insists "always two"!)

Sometymes you can wake up with the warmest, most delightful lass in your bed - when you went to sleep solo t' begin with!

Wake n' Bake is indeed a wondermous thing!

You CAN get kicked out of the Prince of Wales!

The Number One reason I"m late to the R/F Meet n' Greet - Chain Maile Show! OPA!

And because "this one's got 11..." Friends at TRF/Campgrounds multiply like Tribbles! You'll end up with more than you can possibly count!

I've taken a drink from the EverCrown....its one of those things that you wish someone would of warned you about...then you kick yourself for taking a few more swigs because, why not...it's can't be all that bad...yeah right.

Aye Mouse! Indeed 'twas "experience" o' th' EverCrown wot led t' th' epiphany t' fake th' first swig an' go light on th' second. 'es a terrible enabler tha' William th' Traveler!

Things I learned this past weekend....
-I want to add that during cold weather air mattresses will expand and contract.  This mean during the cold COLD night they will go down and as it get's warmer fill back up.
-When shifting one's self on a wobbly air mattress, remember to use even pressure when moving.  If you don't, you could cause all the air to rush to the unoccupied area, and dump your partner onto the cold ground from a sound WARM sleep.  They will NOT thank you for it.
- I second Trilliums's comment, we walked around faire all day Saturday and Sunday and only 4 people from here said hi. :)
-I second Molden's comment.  Though our camps were a bit apart we made friends with 2 groups.  And because rennies are helpful and generous we shared salt and peper, pam cooking spray, as well as Pyrate Rum & Single Barrel Jack Daniels.
-And the last think I learned was, just because your tend doesn't have mildew on it and stink doesn't mean that it is useable. CHECK YOUR ZIPPERS!  Our tent worked great going up, but saddly we couldnt' close our front door.  With the application of rennie engiunity hand soap, cooking spray, and safety pins we at least had some sort of door.

Things I learned this season:

Advent found a really big 'hole' in the campgrounds!
KP and his lovely lady could very easily get what they want from me with shortbread cookies!
It's so FLUFFY!!  :D
Alaric has the CURE ALL scotch for a lost voice!

Things I learned this season:

I will go into Faire on Sunday no matter how much I protest.
There's always someone around to keep me warm.
My mug will NEVER be empty.
It's not so bad just hanging with the kids so my friends can have grown-up time.
If you don't have it--someone will loan it to you.
If there is no picture, it didn't happen.
What happens at Faire goes on Facebook or Youtube.

It was a great season, everyone!

I found one between POW and the Pirate Shop, near the Scottish Court.  Only time all season StudMuffin threw me.  Luckily there were several very kind mundanes who picked me up and got me remounted.  Now I keep a much closer eye when passing through that area.
