Hi there folks, I wanted to get some advise on how to get started on making some muffin hats. I have a ton of faires that I attend within the year and it would be lovely to have something to keep the sun off my head and possibly rest of my body so I don't become a crispy fritter every single time I go outside.
I thought I saw a major pattern company that had a muffin hat style..but its been a while and I can't remember.
if anyone remembers what the pattern might be that would be most helpful or any oter tips would be welcome as well.
Simplicity 4059 has a muffin cap with a brim.

Semptress also has several variations of the "muffin" cap pattern, they are near the bottom.
No pattern needed. Make one from dollar bin material first.
- Cut a circle 24" in diameter. This is simply a starting point and can be adjusted to make a hat with more or less flop
- Measure the distance around your head, staying just over the ears and about an inch over the eyebrows. write this number down.
- Cut a rectangle 4" wide by the distance around your head, plus an inch for a seam allowance.
- Sew the 4" ends right sides together, using a 1/2" seam allowance.
- Press the seam flat.
- Fold the wrong sides together so that you have a circular piece 2" wide with the right sides facing out.
- Test fit this circle to your head. If it's too tight you may need to make another. If it's too loose, open it up, resew the 4" seam and try again.
- Once it fits correctly, iron it so that it stays folded.
- Take the 4" circle and hand sew all the way around the edge, about a 1/2" in, using a running stitch with a strong thread. Neatness is optional as this will be hidden, but do try to keep your stitches about 1/2 inch long.
- Pull both ends of the thread until the circle forms a pouch, with the good side outside, about the size of your head.
- Try the pouch on your head, and adjust the size so that it is just slightly looser than the circle you made earlier.
- Tie the ends of the thread together so that the pouch keeps its size.
- Even out the gathers
- Put the pouch inside the circle, lining up the raw edges so that they face the same direction, NOT towards each other. Pin together.
- Sew using a 3/8" seam allowance, either by hand or machine.
- Flip the band down so that the raw edges are inside the cap. Turn the folded edge of the band up to the outside so that you have a band about an inch wide consisting of four layers of material. Iron so that it stays.
Try different materials for different amounts of flop. I like a nice light muslin for warm days, and a heavier denim or canvas for colder ones. My wife has one made out of black velvet and lined with linen for a bit of extra body.
Try contrasting materials for the band and cap. Piece the top together before cutting the circle to get a parti-color effect.
Wash thoroughly before wearing. I got caught in a rain shower wearing one I had just made out of red canvas. Boy, was my face red. ;D

Ive only used the McCalls pattern to make light muffin hats but the sizing is very big! When faced with the sun I just pull the poof over and out to block rays.
ironically I think I own that mcalls pattern, its hard to tell since I am moving around a lot of stuff hoping to be moved in a few months time.
