Title: All Hallow's Eve 2010 Contests
Post by: Morrigan on October 26, 2010, 06:00:51 PM
Lots of spooktacular stuff going on this weekend!   The contests are as follows:

11:00am - Revels Stage - Scream Like a Banshee contest (this one is always fun)

1:00-3:30pm - Revels Stage - Pumpkin Carving Contest (for patrons)

2:00pm - Arena - Halloween Costume Contest  (This one is HUGE)

4:00pm - Revels Stage - Kettle Korn (Kettle CRACK!) Eating Contest. (adult only)

ALSO, there will be trick-or-treating for the children at many of our shops throughout the village...

ALSO ALSO, as usual, the contests listed above are for patrons only.  However, this is one of the weekends where there is a contest among vendors, artisans, and participants.   There is a participant pumpkin carving contest throughout the village, so have your pumpkin on display in your shop for our judges to see!   (I believe Whimsy's Muse won last year...)

It's gonna be a fun weekend!

I believe I read on the Entertainment Schedule that there was going to be a caramel apple eating contest at 4pm at the Revels Stage, which I assumed was for the kids...  Has that been changed, then?

Just today, the decision was made to change the caramel apple to kettle corn.  We try to use TRF vendors as much as possible for the eating contests...  (and to tell the truth, the cleanup after the caramel apple was always a bear, so I'm happy as a clam about this decision!)

As far as it being for kids, the eating contests have always been adult-only. The reason behind this is safety, really.  It just has never seemed to be a good idea to allow minors in a contest which inherently involves a remote risk of choking.  I will occasionally allow someone as young as 16, but only with parental permission AND presence (and even then, only as alternates in case an adult competitor failed to show). These are speed-eating contests, and whereas we have never had a choking incident in one of our eating contests, the potential is obviously there.

The other three contests are VERY appropriate for children of all ages.  The costume contest on this weekend has a children's division, the pumpkin carving is first-come-first-serve while-they-last, and done with child-safe carving kits... and the scream like a banshee contest, in particular, has a history of just over half of its winners being school-age children (they don't have the internal censors that keep so many adults from just cutting loose).

Ahhh... well, I'm in trouble, then!  :o  Don't think we'll be doing the carving, but the other two are definitely on our schedule!  Thanks for the info!  :)

Same ones that howl when I'm at karaoke.

My daughter made it to the semi finals for the scream like a banshee contest.  Unfortunately, think her first scream was better than the second and then of course she was out screamed!  She had a great time though.    Would have loved the season tickets for her for next year as this is the last year she will be considered a child!

I'm never eating kettle corn AGAIN!

My mouth feels like I had been eating glass shards and sandpaper!

I still think I won  :P

You were SOOO CLOSE!!!    It really was a put-them-side-by-side-and-use-the-hairy-eyeball judgement call....   But my hairy eyeball was approximately 4 inches from the bags, so I'm confident!

I'm sorry about the glass shards - I thought we had all of those picked out!   :-P
