Title: Garb Plotting for 2011
Post by: LadyStitch on November 02, 2010, 09:07:31 AM
Now that my faire season is almost over the Pink pirate has thrown another challange at me.  This year my challange was to upgrade the Flamingo brother's.  I was able to turn just the basic pink pirate I made 2 years ago into the wonderfully fully lined suit style w/ welted pockets pirate coat  and vest of the new Pink Pirate.  It made it's debute at Scarby opening day this year.
The only thing that wasn't upgraded was his trousers. Sadly after 3 seasons of wear they are in need of replacement.  I am planning on salviging the waist band, leg bands and all the trim.  Because I'm a fabraholic I actully bought the whole bolt of pink linen so I 'should' have enough to remake his pants so they are poofier and longer for him.

Now the grand challange..... ::listens for drumroll::
I have been asked to remake Sir Roland.  Sir Roland was a character the rogue played in a play called "Captain Blood".  He is a nobleman during the 1750's -ish.   We are going to base it on the clockwork men from Dr Who's "The Girl in the Fireplace" . It is to be made of velvet, gold trim, lace , gold buttons and everything.  Yes I know I'm nuts but I think it will look amazing.

I'm thinking of using the J Ryan coat as a base.  What do all of you think?  Oh and a place where I can get Plum colored velvet.

Is this a private thread, or meant for everyone's 2011 plotting?  ;D

***
Lady S, I've heard *nothing* but good things about the JP Ryan frock coat, and the one JP Ryan pattern I made (caraco) was the best pattern I've ever, ever used, hands down. So I think you can't really go wrong there.

Plum velvet? Fashion Fabrics Club (http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/search/search.aspx?source=searchbox&keywords=purple+velvet) has several things that come up in a search for "purple velvet," though nothing that looks like the deep plum silk velvet I have in my stash. Purple is apparently a big color for fall 2010, though, so you might start haunting the good fabric stores in your area (I bought mine locally, years ago).

***
As for me, there's so much I want to do! A military jacket to go with the Much Ado garb (maybe 2?), plus sleeves and chemises to finish off my & MIL's outfits... I *really* want to get going on the Promenade kirtle... and I want to finish the curved-front-opening dress I started this year. But FIRST, I'm using my Simplicity corset pattern to make a damask kirtle from. 2011 is the year for Kirtle or Bust for me, I think. If I don't manage one, I honestly think I'm going to retire from costuming.

Oh this is a public thread.  You can start plotting for 2011 now.  ;D
****
Oh I got wonderful plum velvet about 14 years ago.  I ended up making a bodice for me (still in the UFO pile)  with it.  Saddly I wish there was enough of it to make his coat out of.  Plum purple is my favorite color. :)  When he said this is what he wanted I was VERY happy.  I get the scraps to play with  heee....   ;D
I have already started looking for the velvet.  We have made friends with the local Joanne's clerks.  We can place orders for velvet AND use a 50% off coupon on the order.  We just have to find the velvet.  same goes for the buttons.  If we find the one we want we can place the order during  a 50% Entire Stock even and get a great deal. We did that for the 40 buttons needed for the pirate outfit.
Now just need the trims.  I am excited to do it but it will be a challenge.  The only thing I want but not sure where to find is the woven tailor's canvas to use as interfacing in the coat.  If I am making something THIS nice, I want the best.  Last time we priced it out, to buy this coat it was going to be run $1000 bucks!
****
Depending on how authentic you want the military coat I would recommend as a base the McCalls civil war coat.  Make a nice military suit block,  OR I managed to get my hands on a historically accurate Dragoon's coat pattern.  I'll look up what brand it is if you want me to :) Cost me a collage students fortune ($25+?) but it was worth it.

Lady Stitch have you tried B. Black and Sons for the canvas? (Not sure which type you are looking for)

They have a good selection, including french collar canvas.

My plan for 2011 is to:

*Make a Roman styled Renaissance dress (Roman as in the city, not the Roman empire)
*Finishing the embroidered camicia
*Make a Phantom of the Opera Masquerade costume
*Finish a wedding dress
*Make another Renaissance apron and partlet (I need a lot more of this stuff...)

I still have so much left for 2010! But for 2011, I already know I plan to make an alternate bodice (a regular one, as opposed to my currently in progress doublet bodice), something a little more Medieval for Costume College, something later Victorian (maybe a steamy bustle look), and hopefully I'll finally make that 1600s gown that has been in my plans for the last two years.

Plum is supposed to be the next big color, but it might not hit the fabric stores until after January. After all, the designers have to get their hits in first.

My daughter has decided she wants a German gown, ala Princesses of Saxony (http://www.tate.org.uk/images/cms/12568w_messages_threeprincesses.jpg)
I have never done one of these, so it will be an engineering challenge.  ;D

I love this company.  They helped me out so much when I was doing these custom cloaks a while back.  They cut me a deal on an end of bolt heavy black wool.  They have the hair cloth interfacing that I would want.  Good golly it is $13 bucks a yard!  It is what i wanted, and drool over to work with.

Donna, I wish you luck on your project.  You are going to need it.  ;D

Same here! It's so hard to get everything finished, isn't it? ;)

For 2010/2011 (I'm just going to combine them in my head now), I'm planning to finish my renaissance corset, make 2 new noble gowns, do some intense beading on the gowns I already have, make a cloak/coat thing, a partlet, a new chemise, and die of shock if I actually get it all done :D

what I need for 2011 is more chemises and skirts! I'm also planning on a more epic patchwork skirt than my last one...

I really hope I will have more free reign to make amazing non Ren things for class and such...

I wish to make a new set of garb for my son; a doublet with removeable sleeves and a shirt with sleeves made from that blackworked linen.

For myself, I will make a GAOP era U.S. Marine uniform to counter the pirates at the pirate weekend!  It just so happens that there is a retired Marine lives in my area, who has done a great deal of historical research in this area.  I should be able to put something together quite nicely!

Also, wish to finish the two full circle cloaks for my son and myself.  They gore are cut and paired; now all I must do is sew them, make and attach the collars, and then dye the cloaks.  Easy, right?!

Then Victorian/Steampunkish clothes for my sister and Niece.

Dona C, I can't wait to see the progress on your Cranach gown--do please remember to post pix as you go! I don't think we've really had a Cranach gown on the boards yet.

I don't technically have time to do anything, but I've pre-washed my purple damask (http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL417/1033223/4707019/393139519.jpg) (tablecloths) for the kirtle project, and have been studying skirt options and cutting diagrams online. Just watch: I'm going to skirt-diagram myself into not making this! Ha!!

I need to:
~finish my victorian blouse and hat for the Time Traveler's Ball next weekend
~ generate clothing and some props for a Steampunk event in Jan.
~ take apart a basic cloak and make a fleece lining w/ waterproof interlining (I'm SO
tired of being wet and cold on rainy days
~ take apart my bodice from last season- I could have sworn I washed that canvas
     interlining before I cut it!)
~embroider/bead the paned sleeves of my court gown ....I'm feeling the need for a title
     I think!
~design and make a Medeval gown (gates of hell variety, I think)-Costume College '11

Mmmm...probably enough for now...

Well getting hurt and then waiting for surgery and having surgery and now recovering has killed 2010 for me. However I do get to plan next year because it will include our 20th Anniversary and we are going to have a Renewal of Vows Celebration.

What I am looking to do for next year:

For Myself:
2 Tourney Gowns
1 Square Necked Smock
1 High Necked Smock with Embroidery
1 Pair of Bodies based on extant examples made from silk taffeta
1 Farthingale made from silk taffeta
1 Pair of Bodies forTourney that is made from lavender linen
1 roped petticoat, made from lavender linen
1 Elizabethan Jacket
1 Skirt in Shot Dupioni Blue/Purple with black velvet trim
1 Ropa
1 Italian Gown
New Grey Gown for Renewal

I will be using this gown for my 12th Night as well.  As well so I think a journey to LA Fabric District might be in order, I hope to get Lavender Taffeta for the PoB and the Farthingale.
I am planning on doing machine/and hand embroidery for the forepart and sleeves, if I get to work now I might do enough to make a kirtle and who nows?!!

For my Husband (He cut back some food intake and lost 40lbs-wah):
2 Tourney Outfits
2 New Shirts
New Black outfit with grey or blue as accent for Renewal

Eldest Boy:
2 New Shirts
2 Complete outfits -He keeps growing

Youngest Boy
The Same He also keeps growing

Eldest Boy's Girlfriend
She is a size 2
Smock
PoB
Farthingale
Petticoat
Kirtle
Gown
Find her shoes to get
Coif and Hat

That's it for the Renaissance/Medieval stuff next year.  I also need to get some 18th c and early 19th c stuff in there as well as a LOT of Steampunk and Victorian.

None, and I mean none of my garb that I wore this faire season fits anymore. Which means that I am going to need new everything! My lovely pink and green gown that I gushed so much about, no longer fits, and I can't take it in anymore?

So for 2011 I need

-1 new nobles ensemble
-2 new pirate ensembles

For the Steampunk Worlds Fair

-2 Victorian outfits, and a ballgown

and a crapload of other stuff!

I only have a handfull of new projects yelling at me this coming year, I cant do too much because my work stuff comes first and that has been put off because of having my shoulder fixed in November.

So I have
Nice over dresses for mom ( I'm thinking of a variation of Italian)

Maybe attacking a new bodice- my leopard print really doesnt fit anymore and I only wore the blasted thing twice!

And in May a bunch of new breeches, shirts and a few vests for my little guy, he got 2 seasons out of his other stuff since I made it big!

I have some stuff that needs to get taken in and some others that need to be fixed including a pretty faux fur caplet that I found in The Great Storage Unit clean I am going to line it in ploar fleece rather than the satin it has now

gem, how HA are you going with the kirtle?  And is it going to be Tudor or Elizabethan?  I've been studying the hell out of Tudor kirtles lately and I have some research stuff I can show you if you're interested in skirt patterns.

I want to sew something, but I have no idea what.  The full Tudor noble ensemble seems to be getting nowhere since I can't fit anything on myself and I can't find a fitting partner; also, I'm not really that talented at sewing and this is a really big project.  I need something that isn't too complicated, is pretty, doesn't take weeks of research, and would look good on my figure.  Something to get my sewing confidence back.
Title: Re: Garb Plotting for 2011
Post by: gem on December 23, 2010, 03:11:41 AM
Sara, I am going NOT HA and definitely not fussy with the kirtle--because the goal is to get it DONE!! I'm making the bodice from Simplicity 2621. I haven't decided on a skirt pattern yet. I'm tempted to try something with gores, but again I don't want to talk myself out of actually making this. What have you got?

As for you... what about going middle class? You could start with a corset like Simplicity 2621 out of a really pretty fabric, add a nice full cartridge pleated skirt & bumroll, and then add a jacket or a fitted English gown. The key is finding a style that is more forgiving with the fit (so a jacket vs say a doublet bodice).

Or you could try a curved-front opening gown. I'll come back with better links tomorrow, but there are a couple in the in-progress and finished projects thread, and they are *adorable!* I have a curvy figure like yours, and I found this surprisingly easy to fit on myself, and if I hadn't gotten sick for a week, I'd have finished mine last fall.

The Evil Queen for Wicked Faire 2011
A couple of 1940's and 1950's outfits
New gamurra, venetian and florentine gowns for Pennsic 40
One or two new pirate ensembles for faire season
Post here more often :)

I'm also giving myself a fabriholic sewing challenge. I must go through my fabric stash and issue each 4yrd length or more a pattern or design. I saw something similar on Jo's blog (Bridges on the Body): http://bridgesonthebody.blogspot.com/2009/03/ground-rules.html

Add some oversleeves to a dress.

Then maybe a new underskirt or two.

*get my undercorset sewn together (it's already cut & pinned, except for the boning channels)
*Irish dress - color to be determined after I get my MacDuff tartan piece of fabric for a forepart to the underskirt
*Underskirt for Irish dress
*another dress, probably something similar to Iris & Rose's (looks like an Irish dress, but has a stomacher piece on the bodice)
*new bloomers (probably something in flannel to keep my legs warm at colder festivals)

Anea, that's beautiful! What kind of fabric are you using (I mean, I know it's linen, but details?). One of my goals for 2011+ is to incorporate my needlework into my costuming, but I'm stumped when it comes to mixing needlework linen with sewing linen.

For this project I'm using a 19th century linen bedsheet. It's not too thick, and has a nice shine. It's also well-worn, which means it's soooooft.  :) The original camicia used a finer linen for the sleeves, and a thicker one for the main body. I use the same fabric for main body + sleeves. It's embroidered with black cotton thread; the original has dark purple silk floss. I wanted silk originally, but it was hard to get + way too expensive...

my plans for 2011 have changed. since I have a baby due in August! i'm going to be changing some things

for myself

I am going to attempt to work on an italian based/inspired gown.   i think it will be way more comfortable during and after pregnancy to wear at the MD and PA ren fairs.  i'm used to wearing tudor gowns though, so this is way new territory to me!  i'm only going to stick with one gown this year, since we won't be going as often due to new baby :)

my husband

i have to finish his doublet (that i started working on last season), and make a matching doublet for him to go with my new gown

for the baby!!! (weeee!)

i knw that babies typically wore just a little dress/chemise. but if its a girl, she will have a tiny little over dress for her one day at fair. if its a boy, a tiny little doublet

i was going to work on some awesome outfits for steampunk fair, but id rather be comfortable rather than stylish
so im going to keep it simple

Oh wow everyone has such wonderful plans.  I am glad this thread is here because it got me thinking a little more seriously about what I want to get done.

Well my husband just sent home some fabric from Kuwait.  It looks like sari fabric.  And the guy he got it from...said it was sari fabric.  But until I see it.....  So i'm waiting for that to arrive so I can pick out fabric to make the skirt and choli to go with it.  If that goes well I think it'll be my Frankenfeast outfit.

I have several gowns I've made in the past that I'd like to give new life to.  Partly because I'm rapidly losing weight (finally) and should be able to fit back into them again this year.  So that would be:
-peacock middle class gown...which also needs a new hat
-green and pink gown
-navy velvet english fitted gown
-navy wool kirtle and purple wool doublet
-camel velvet italian
-pink venetian - this is so close to being finished it's really a crime that it's not.
All of those outfits need some TLC, new trim, and some fun accesories that I might have not had time to make for them before.

I also would really like to make:
-a working class italian outfit
-an 18th cenury gown to go with my cute little tricorn hat and undergarments that were my 18th centruy tart outfit at a recent party.  Which if fun for a pirate fest, but would also really love a gorgeous gown to go with it all.
-a vampire outfit that i've had floating in my head but havn't brought to life...somewhat based on the purple and black gown worn in the second Elizabeth movie with that black lace collar.  yum
-a tudor gown to go with the french hood I made 3 years ago.

Oh who am I kidding my list of WANTS could fill a whole notebook.  Now to get motivated and turn WANTS into HAVES!!!!

I am overembroidering the borders in metallic gold and making a bodice out of it. maybe even sleeves.

So far I only have planned the hand sewn,  black worked chemise and keeping a journal on my progress. It's not posted yet but I have been fairly good at keeping it up to date hehehe. I am on  very slow dial up (welcome to the country) so anything on the internet is an all day chore.

Since the last round of insane costuming finished, I have to do:

Started projects:
Cage crinoline
the final one of three lace edged waist slips

Customer projects:
1920's tea gown
slip to go under it
2 Regency nightgowns in linen
a lilac banyan
3 book covers
a wrap to go with the gown
a naval captain's uniform, Trafalgar era
a little poly or silk top
4 18th/19th C shirts
Kilt

Personal projects
Cavalier era ball gown
Cavalier era day dress

The Cavalier stuff is for 2013's game, but the rest needs to be done by Easter.

Ok, how much of a Rennie am I when I start having garb dreams.  I had a dream the other night I decided to make a 'stash' dress, and went the first day of Scarby in a red velvet bodice, with white egypian cotton sleeves , and gold trim and pearls italian gown.

I either 1) spend too much time with all of you  or 2)  need to quit working on theater projects before bed.  ;D

I'm really impressed that you all the year planned out. I have sewing ADD, I can only plan out a project or two in advance, because I never know what project I will find that will completely consume my focus!  ;

So far this year, I've finished:
1880 Victorian walking gown (and hat!)
1890 Victorian bathing suit
Kilt

On my list:
Hat for 1890 bathing suit
Finish the 1770's frock coat (UFO)
Finish the 16th c venetian (UFO)
Victorian dress for a masqurade ball (ball gown bodice, butterfly train, and an underskirt)
Steampunk victorian (dark, in the planning stages)
Possibly an asian inspired pirate outfit
Pirate coat for this September

But I so can't commit to anything after the steampunk, because I'm sure something else will come along that will catch my eye, lol!

I'm seriously thinking of pulling that out of the stash this weekend.  I want to do it tonight but got pulled into a last minute thing after work.  :(

I do have left over velvet, and I have LOTS of white cotton fabric, and I have lots of pearls and left over white with gold roses trim....  DANG it I'm suppose to do stuff to make the UFO list get smaller. Not get bigger!

Yeah, but you need maternity garb anyway, and this will help diminish your stash. It's a win-win!

If it diminishes the stash that IS a good thing.... right?  :-\

While attending MARS CON for the day on Saturday between Panels, Elizabeth and I took a trip over to SR Harris. There I bought two remnants of the most lovely Maroon and Gold Brocade(just under 7 yards at $6 a yard, Reg. $28 yd.) to make my Daughter's Venetian gown...(http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/198233_10150157121676280_568686279_8531079_359981_n.jpg)

While not exactly latter 16th century the colors were perfect in my eye for this gown...(http://starlightmasquerade.com/pastgallery/BurgundyVenetian/SMburgven1.jpg)

She will have recovered much of her figure by late September after having her first child. Being a Doctor of Chiropractic, my daughter's "wenching" days are over. She will be elevated to M'Lady Adrienne of Eden Prairie.

That venetian is spectacular. I have put mine aside since the fall, I wasn't too thrilled with how simple I had designed it. I never realized what a difference the sleeves and partlet made. I love the lace trim at the wrists, and the paned sleeves. I'm so glad you posted that picture. And the fabric you picked up to make the gown in is fantastic! I can't wait to see the finished product.

Ok, here is an update on my Sewing list for 2011

•   Remade Flamingo pants
•   Lady Stitch Outfit -- Considering I just made 2 outfits this MONTH for me, I'd call this fulfilled, at least somewhat.
•   New Sir Roland outfit
•   Sewing kit pouch (UFO- 3 months)
•   A Fleece Lined Cloak for SIL (UFO-6 years)
•   Dicken's vest for Roe (UFO-9 months)
•   PP new vest
•   New Bowling shirt for PP (UFO-1 year)
•   Nephew's Knight outfit (UFO-2 years)
•   Pleated skirt for me (UFO 1- year)
•   Patchwork skirt for lady stitch (UFO-6 months)
•   The patchwork leather cloak for PP (UFO of 9 years)
•   Little cavalier hat for Quizzik - Actually found someone who makes them, and could do it cheap.
•   A vintage style dress for me
•   Baby Bibs (On hand Gifts) several made up, but always could do more to sell, and have on hand.
•   Finish that Tudor style Purple velvet dress (UFO of 12 years)- This is now too small for me.  I'm tempted to put it up for sale/ trade. It is a size 12.
•   Strawberry child's dress (UFO-1 year)
There is alot of UFO's on there, since that is my personal challange this year, but I hope to get a good dent in this very soon.  ;D
Ok I got this updated.  I could cross something off, but I will need to change my plans for this year around.  And add things for fuzzlet and I. I want good looking maternity clothing, and I want to make fuzzlet  cloths to wear when he/she comes home and for the holidays.  Oh and we decided to make PJ for everyone for Christmas this year, BUT  we are doing it  by using coupons, and a family per month so we are not hurried come Christmas.  My goal is to have them done by Labor day. (take that as your will :) )

I only have a handfull of new projects yelling at me this coming year, I cant do too much because my work stuff comes first and that has been put off because of having my shoulder fixed in November.

So I have
Nice over dresses for mom ( I'm thinking of a variation of Italian) I made her two for Christmas, but I want to make another more Irish style

Maybe attacking a new bodice- my leopard print really doesnt fit anymore and I only wore the blasted thing twice!Stratch that no time to be spared for that

And in May a bunch of new breeches, shirts and a few vests for my little guy, he got 2 seasons out of his other stuff since I made it big!Not there yet but I am hoping that he still fits at least something *fingerscrossed*
I have some stuff that needs to get taken in and some others that need to be fixed including a pretty faux fur caplet that I found in The Great Storage Unit clean I am going to line it in ploar fleece rather than the satin it has now that is on perma hold right no

Maelstrom kit:

Pirate gown (cut)
Pirate chemise (cut and being put together
Mediaeval gown

Dunno what the lovely bonkers customers want, but so far we've been asked about uniforms for blokes...  And there are several nibbles about wedding stuff and mundane clothing.

Changed my mind about garb for this year....thinking I would really love to do some fantasy-like garb.  Sorta medieval/LOTR/Kahlan/Knights Tale mix.

Pieces I am planning...my color inspiration came from colors on the forest floor in the spring.
Salmon-y/peach, brown, greens, tan and some little touches of pale pink.
-dress with narrow sleeve-already have some peach linen for it
-short sleeve dress that will have full sleeves that will lace in...not sure about what fabric I want to use for this
-cloak with sleeves for cold weather...prolly wool
-a long apron with big pockets on the front...would love to be able to make it out of some sort of suede...but we'll see what I come up with.
-brown wool bodice
-a random skirt for layering
-cowl
-a "magical" satchel
-wide belt that I think I am going to make out of some leather or suede scraps or maybe if I could a cool distressed leather coat at Goodwill that would be great.
-a velvet dress that's gonna be kinda elvish looking...Carmel-y cotton velvet
-muslin sleeveless underdress...already have

That's it.  I figure that I can mix and match all these pieces to make outfits for the whole season and be comfy in about any weather.  And since I'm still losing weight and don't really want to be waiting until a few weeks beforehand to try and figure out making a corset and then making alterations and all that.

Yeah Garb!!!!!
