Title: Help - plastic backed fabric
Post by: Dayna on November 11, 2010, 05:30:11 PM
A colleague of mine purchased some abso-gorgeous fabric for a gown, only to have me point out that it was plastic-backed and she might as well wrap herself in cling-film.  Needless to say, she's bummed and I'm trying to come to her rescue.

I know there's a way to get it off, but for the life of me I cannot bring it to the front of my mind.

Does anyone know what the method is?  I believe it had something to do with a certain substance added to the washing water and then you could peel the backing off.

Thanks!

Well if you can figure out how to do that, I'd be really interested.  I've seen many fabric patterns that I loved that were either rubber or plastic backed.  What is it with these people making this fabric anyway?  Don't they know they are ruining perfectly good garb fabric?  GEEEZ!!!  LOL!!!!  But seriously, let me know what you find out because I'd be interested too.

Plastic  or rubber backed fabrics are more for Draperies and jackets, than garb. The added layer adds insulation against the cold winds.

Therefore, I do not recommend their use for Garb.

You know, I do recall way back some conversation about those fabrics with a slight backing that could be removed....I want to say it was with vinegar. Please don't anyone run out and try this on anything you don't want to ruin as I could be waaay off, but worth taking a snip off and trying it out.

Given the rubber backing, I'd be wary of the rest of the fabric content as well.  Even if it's a woven fiber, it might still feel like woven bits of plastic bag on even without the rubber backing...

I had some fabric like that, used to be curtains, made outside cushions out of it, holds up better than the outside cushions I bought! ;D
