Title: Snowed In!!!...How are you faring???
Post by: Lady Kathleen of Olmsted on December 11, 2010, 04:00:08 PM

Dec.11,2010, first BLIZZARD of the season!

Down here in Rochester, we are snowed in. The winds are picking up and businesses are closing down as this passes. There is no going anywhere.

The Earl and I were to have gone to the Cities today for a meeting, dinner with our daughter, then see the Dregs later in the evening. The Dregs show has been canceled due to the weather. It is not safe anywhere in the storm area to be on the roads.

How is it faring where you are???

Shovelled 5 times, now.  Barely making a difference now that the drifting is here...

So far in Des Moines it's not too bad. It is starting to snow and possibly sleet. It's 22* with a windchill of 6*. There is a blizzard warning for us until 9:00 a.m. Sunday. I was going to go shopping today but with me still with a respiratory "thing" I decided to stay in until tomorrow.... then we'll see what's happened here  ;)

I live south of Rochester NY, I hope this has nothing to do with the name. LOL Now, don't take this personal, but you can keep the weather over there, you don't need to share. After all Buffalo had its snow storm we don't need to spread it all over.

NW Illinois:  snowing really hard since early afternoon, and before that, rain, so as the temps are dropping, there is snow over solid ice.  My company's Christmas party was cancelled.  Evidently on Hwy. 20 in Dubuque, IA, they pulled the plows off the road & have a towing ban (so I've read on Facebook).  The party venue is about an hour away from my house in good weather, so I wasn't going to chance it with near white-out conditions tonight.

Why did we move from Florida?  Remind me, please.   ???

Tired of Winter already. Third weekend storm that hurts my business. Gave the critters at home extra food and water, figured I'd be sleeping at work tonight. Temperature is dropping and winds picking up.

The winds are howling away. Still snowing at this late hour!!  Crikey!!

Tomorrow after my retired neighbor, Bill, snowblows the driveway, I will get out the shovel and clean up so the sun can melt what remains. That will be good excercise for the day.

We got about 18 inches of snow in Baldwin, WI.  According to the local weather people, we can expect another 2-4 inches before morning.

We are sitting at about 16/17" in Brooklyn Center/Robbinsdale.  I went over to a friends house last night to hang out fully intending on going home.  Ended up passing out on the couch and waking up this morning snowed in.  Braved the weather to go home and grab provisions and head back to her place.  My apartment lot doesn't get plowed until Monday and there is no way I'm getting my little Kia in there...or back out for work on Monday for that matter.  Kid is stuck in Cottage Grove with Grandma and will likely stay there through Monday.

The fibromyalgia is kicking my butt, the internet is boring me, and I'm tired.

Other than that things are great.

The driveway of my house is thigh deep. It;s going to take a big hinkin' snowblower to plow through. The plowed drift at the base of the driveway near the street is close to 5 feet. Damn Snowplows!

Welcome to Winter!

My poor car has 3 ft around it on all spots.... and I have no shovel. I love living in an apartment :( I'm hoping a friend or two comes with a shovel and lovingly helps me.

As for the Dome collapse. Check out fox news 9 they have video of it happening

I spent a solid 4.5 hours with my tiny snowblower removing snow. Some of our drifts were 40" high. Then to top it all off the water heater went out so I couldn't even take a long hot bath to ease my sore muscles....

At my age, I learned how to use a snowblower today!  My husband bought one 3 days before the storm.  We lucked out.

Though I wish I lived somewhere that I didn't have to learn how to use a snowblower!

NW Illinois got dumped on, too, but I don't think as much as you folk in Minnesota.  It's still awful, though.  Yesterday morning, it rained for a while, then turned to snow, then last night the temp dropped.  So this morning outside, when I was doing the snowblower, there is a sheet of ice underneath the snow.  Our whole driveway is like a skating rink.  And since the driveway is about 1/3 of a mile long, downhill to the street, it should be lots of fun tomorrow at 7 a.m. when I take Chiquita out of the garage & try to get down the hill to go to work.  Last year, when the same thing happened, she slid into a ditch at the side of the driveway.  Not fun!

Sand and/or Kitty Litter can help some with traction on ice.  Studded tires are nice too, but kind-of expensive if you don't need them very much.

If you have a couple of secure anchor point at the top of the hill, you might use a pair of winches to lower your car down to the street.   ;)   :D

I was at my parents, helped them shovel out 20 inches there and came home to just as much at home. Shoveled the main areas and working on a couple other paths to the garbage area and garden. On the way back home today the roads were pretty bad.

If you use sand the coarse sand is best. Playsand is ok and better than nothing but the coarse variety is the best choice as it really digs into the ice.

I know this is kind of late in saying but for those of us in the midwest and northern climes we should have a winter travel/car kit in our verhicles.

It has snowed every day except two since November 28.  This is my son's 4th snow day....no busses....not that he cares much.  We live about 2 hours north of Toronto.  We now have as much snow as we normally have by the end of February.  Thank you la Nina.

I don't have any pictures of conditions right now but the Lincoln is totally buried and my son will be snowboarding off the garage any time now.  We will need to get it shovelled off soon.  Break out the snow suits!!!  All fashion statements are now off!

Stay warm everyone.

It took me over 2 hours yesterday to clean up after Bill used his snowblower to blow out the driveway. It was a good workout that left me dripping wet. Achining later in the day.

Today's weather outloook is FRIGID COLD! Windchills of -25 to -30 for the day. All Schools are closed here in Rochester, Mn. I will get a lot of cutting out done of stuff I still want to make for Christmas presents. The rest of the week looks good. NO SNOW!!

we spent about two hours blowing out the garage and side of the house before a well-hidden branch undid the machine.

stuck home today due to poor planning on my part or we'd be out getting paint supplies.

My furnace has completely died!  Of all the times for this to happen it has to go out when it is -17 degrees here!  At least we have space heaters and lots of blankets.  We should be getting a new furnace tomorrow...now to just figure out how to pay for it.

My sympathies on the white stuff falling from sky and low, low, LOW temps some of you are experiencing.  Some hardy souls actually enjoy this kind of winter, but I opted out some 25 years ago and moved to San Antonio, Texas, retiring about 30 miles from there.   Cold here is 32 degrees (above zero, that is).

May your warm hearts and dreams of faire protect you all.

Some of the energy companies do furnaces cheap and you can put them on your gas bill and pay monthly. Might be worth looking into.

And some of the larger companies are doing furnaces cheap to stay open and keep key employees so they still have a work force when things get better.

Well!!!  snowed in for day #5....welcome la Nina!  My son and nephew have been shovelling off the garage roof for the past 4 hours.  The snow was drifted above the shoulders of my son who is 6ft.  We can't see the Lincoln on the front yard for sale.

There were 3 couples stranded down the road that I sent coffee to this morning.  Hubby took it to them with the tractor.  There are 300 vehicles trapped on a stretch of highway a couple of hours west of here for over 24 hours now.  The military has been called in and the only way to reach them is by snowmobile.  I hope they can be pulled out soon...that would be horrible.  Being snowed in your house is one thing...being in a car must be awful.

I recently did something that my dad used to do. I tied a scrap of red cloth to the radio antenna of my car to make it more visible over the snow piles at road intersections.

The thing to remember is that here in the permafridge things like termites, black widows, rattlesnakes mostly get frozen out. Had some friends move to southern Indiana and didn't realize at first that they needed to spray for termites every year. No mosquitos until June.

It's rumored that the actor who plays the Lord Mayor at MNRF has a clause in his contract that he doesn't have to work if it snows on site which is more likely since we now run into the first weekend of October most years. Rumor is he has exercised the option one year when we got some flurries (never have had measurable accumulation that early in the year at least since the last Ice age)

Its been snowing everyday here in Upper Michigan since Thanksgiving.  We had only two days of blue sky and today was one of them.  It didn't last long.  I went shopping to clear skies, came back home and did my farmville thing , went to watch a movie and just before I started watching the movie I looked outside andit was white out conditions.  Weather completly changed in half an hour.  We got just short of a foot of snow on Friday and now its starting again!
