Title: Are your friends obligated? : A disscussion
Post by: LadyStitch on December 20, 2010, 12:45:39 PM
A friend of mine posted up this question regarding something that happened to her this weekend, and I wanted to hear your opinions on it.  I know we have all seen something like this happen.

My friend is a waitress at a small place that serves food, and on Saturday nights has bands, acts and such. That night it was a burlesque show.  It happened that one night a drunk was going to take off her clothes in front of a crowd, and about 30 of them were filming/taking pics with their phones.  She and another waitress got her offstage while her friends just stood around.
The question is  "Do you think that her friends have a moral responsiblity to not let her do that?" What do you think?

In all honesty, I wouldn't allow myself to get drunk enough to do something like that in public, though if by some chance it did, I like to think that the people I would be with would put a stop to it before I made an utter fool of myself.  I can't think of any of my friends who would allow themselves to get that drunk in public either. At home, I do occasionally get plastered, but I'm to an age where I have done all of the falling-down-drunken-escapades that I need to, and find it much more entertaining to see other people act a little goofy instead.

You would hope you have good enough friends to stop you from doing something that stupid.   However, if you get that drunk and stupid on a regular basis, your friends may reach the point of giving up and letting you reap what you sow. :-\

for me, its a personal responsibility to be sure I don't reach that point.

Her friends definitely, or management.

I don't know that it should fall to the waitresses.

Personally,
if I were her friend I would never have let her do that.
But some people have a much broader and loose definition of friend.

To me you protect and defend your friends - some people not so much.

Definitely friends should step in and not let something idiotic happen when another is not in their right frame of mind.

If they were her true & trusting friends...they should of stopped her.
Maybe they are just the type, who hang out and have no real connections?
Management should of stopped her, anyways. What if she fell, got hurt and then on top of that, if they were the last place to serve her.....what repercussions they would have!
But a true friend or not, they should of intervened.....

( I was just thinking...what a surprise she will have if one of the many phone pictures should reach her or someone she knows very well.....  :-\ )

Depends I've been in situations like that the first few times I stepped in and stopped my friend but after a dozen such situations I decided that it wasn't worth trying to stop him any more.  Of course it was about that time I decide that it wasn't worth all the trouble being friends with him either.  Of course since I soon moved out of state the problem corrected itself.

If that girl's 'freinds' would not step up and stop her then they probably weren't her real friends, just some drinking buddies that she was out with, and they probably dared her to do it.
As for the venue, it's a stupid idea to have a 'burlesque night' in the first place.  The barmaids did the right thing by shutting that show down before it got started.  I don't know what ordinances they have in that area, but I figure once she started getting seriously naked, there would be some laws getting broken.   The barmaids were protecting their jobs.

I think it all depends on the situation.  Like other people have already said, if you're friends with someone that consistently does this type of thing, then after a certain point you just kind of throw your hands in the air and let them do what they will.  If it is a one-time drunken thing, then yeah, help a friend out and don't let them do something you know they will later regret.  However, I'm wondering if maybe her friends didn't do anything because they were just as drunk as she was, and so also thought it would be a great idea.

As a side note, I don't see anything wrong with having a Burlesque Show as one of the performing acts- they're fun!
