Title: The Fabric Diet Challenge!
Post by: Kate XXXXXX on January 21, 2011, 08:42:04 PM
Last year, when I decided to go to the nearly three day LARP event (Friday night, Saturday, Sunday, leave after breakfast on Monday), I also thought that I should do this, as far as possible, from stash.  I have managed with stash, gifted fabric, buying a small amount of toile fabric, some of the thread, and some trim.  The breakdown is as follows:

Chemise 1: Cotton sheeting from stash, thread from stash
Chemise 2: Brushed cotton from stash, thread from stash
Chemise 3: Linen Thank You For Having Me gift from fellow conspiritor, thread from stash
Stays: Lining/strength layers are heavy mercerized cotton poplin from stash, outer a £1 remnant bought as a 'some day that'll make a nice corset' bit, and ribbon I bought at the time on sale to go with it...  Boning from stash.  The toile stays were made of a gash stash bit of heavy calico and some of the duct ties I bought to experiment with...  Silk thread had to be bought.  Cotton was from stash.
Pocket hoops: beige polycotton sheeting from stash, metal boning from stash, tape from stash
Under petticoat: cotton flannelet from stash, thread from stash
Saque ball gown: 14m of polyester taffeta (for winter in the UK: I'll be fine!) from stash, pewter metallic lace from stash, bodice lined with linen from friend's stash.  Sleeves and petticoat lined with brown cotton curtain lining from stash.  Black vintage lace was another gift from the friend, for helping her with her stuff.  Black and brown threads from stash, purple had to be bought.
Lilac caraco and petticoat:  Toile fabric from stash.  Caraco silk and cotton brocade fabric and the lilac silk chiffon for the fichu were gifts from the friend, got exceeding cheap from Walthamstow Market!  Cotton lining is high quality shirt fabric from stash (bought cheap years ago!).  Petticoat is cotton and silk satin from stash.  I bought a roll of the lilac taffeta ribbon.  Both the silk and cotton threads came from the stash.
Lilac under petticoat: cotton and linen mix from stash, thread from stash
Rust Polonaise: The linen was a gift from a friend.  I had to buy the dye!  And the ribbon trim.  I also bought the lining: it is a cotton sateen and was on sale at £1.78 per meter, down from £3.50!  It was too good a match to leave.  And the remains went in the stash...  The floss thread used to roll the edges of the linen flounce came from the stash.. I had to buy the rust thread.  The stomacher linen was remnants from another part of the project and the embroidery thread was friend's stash.  The bias bindiing and construction threads were from stash.
Black and white polonaise and petticoat: The black and white print linen was from stash.  White linen lining from friend's stash, black lace from stash, thread from stash.  The black wool satin was from stash, as was its thread...
Tricorn hat materials: stash.  Pewter lace from stash.  I bought the feathers.  Thread from stash.
Straw hat: bought for £4 from charity shop!  I bought the taffeta ribbon.
Gainsborough hat materials: from stash.  Bought the ribbon and roses.  And the feathers!
Second period accurate straw hat: payback for buying friend vast amounts of silk thread!
Banyan: red brocade birthday & Christmas gift from friend, deep rust lining is polcotton sheeting from stash, had to buy the silk thread...  Frog closures from stash

There may be time for a domino cloak, using black velvet from stash and lining from stash.  Both were dirt cheap when I got them.  There are both gold and silver coloured cloak clasps in the stash.

I did run out of the curtain lining I use for toiles, so had to top that up with a few meters of 90" wide stuff on sale at £2.99 per meter.

Patterns were either pre-owned by me or my friends, or drafted up from Norah Waugh or Janet Arnold.  Stays pattern is an 18th C adaptation of the corset generator pattern.  Chemise pattern also an on-line freebie.

I don't know if this beats the Iron Dress competition...  Total spend on thread, trims, toile fabric and fastening (mainly hooks and eyes) has been about £50, spread over about 11 months.

That is amazing Kate!
Not only in the fact that you did SO much from stash, but the fact that you did SO much!  Only 11 months!?!?
And here I "limit" myself to one big project per winter.   ;)

{Bows to acknowledge complements} Thank you.

I did fit in a fair number of customer projects as well, this year, including two weddings!   :)

The advantages of being a stay-and-work-at-home-mum of a Giant Mutant Ninja Teenager is that I have no commuting time, I can work as much as I like and when I like, and I don't have to brat-wrangle all day!  And working to deadlines all the time means that I work quite fast.

I can't believe you found 90" wide lining fabric for 2.99/m!!  I'm out of my 60" wide muslin (most of the bolt went for Much Ado garb last year), and I'm waiting for it to go on sale again...

If you have an Ikea nearby, they have lots of fabrics (both by the yard and as bed linens) on sale now. I scored both a flowery 18th century fabric - 9 meters for basically nothing - and lots of unbleached, semi sturdy fabric for $1,8 a yard.

Ack! What is it with Ikea, already?!  I just had this conversation with my needlework buddies on another BB! Our nearest Ikea is a five-hour drive.

I did not, however, realize they had fabric.  8)

Polycotton sateen curtain lining.  I use it for lining some costume stuff as well as toiles.  Dunelm Mills sometimes have it on special offer, so I tend to grab a chunk then.  Quoite a lot of curtain fabrics and sheeting come up super wide.  Worth looking out for.  Even revolting man-eater flowers can be used for toiles at £1 a meter.

Speaking of IKEA
I scored this bad boy in queen size for $10 in the As Is pile on Friday.
I plan on making my Italian Camicia sleeves with the redwork sections.
Its 100% cotton and feels fabulous on the skin.

I thought of you guys when I found it.

Thanks
I forgot to mention (must be the hair dye seeping into my brain)
that is the only piece of fabric I plan on buying all year.

Everything I have planned to make for this year has to come out of the 5 bins of fabric that are taking up space in our apartment.
The only thing I am allowing myself to buy is thread.

2.99 POUNDS, Gem. I think that's something like six dollars American.

I LOVE Ikea and their bed sheets. You get lot of fabric, often seriously good quality, for little money. The one you scored is gorgeous!

I'm reviving this topic since I have been on a fabric diet all spring.

PP new Ren pants : 2.5 yards of baby pink linen- from stash. Had to buy new buttons, but used the waist band from his old pants, and the zipper.
PP new warm weather Doublet: 3 yards of carnation pink linen left over from his original flamingo shirt/ pants.  Lining is left over silk from another stash project.  Had to buy 2 yards of trim and buttons for it. Detachable sleeves (another 2 yards of linen + silk), lined with same silk, and cuffs are done in left over brocade from his pirate coat.
Me an Empire waist dress:  1/2 yard of dark red velvet for bodice,  sleeves and skirt are done in silk from stash (5+ yards), lined with 4 yards of white muslin from stash, used stash trim, and zipper. ZERO purchases made for item.
Me new maternity bloomers: 2.5 yards of royal blue broad cloth (off a 10 yard bolt)
New chamise:  A VERY full flowy chamise made from 7 yards of royal blue broad cloth (most of the rest of the bolt) Had thread, and bias tape in stash.  Zero purchase for this.
For the theater - 4 yards of Gold satin for a dress, 2.5 yards blue satin for dress, 2.5 yards red satin for dress,  had thread in stash already. Only bought zippers.
Already in the works- a nice empire waist summer dress, 2 more maternity tops, and 3 pair of Maternity capris all from stash fabric.
I think that calculates out to....36+ yards of fabric out of my stash in the past 2 months with another 10+ 10 more in scraps to go out in the next week or so, to bless someone else.  By June first I will have over 50+ yards of fabric out of my stash, with no personal  purchases coming in.
