Title: Where on their person did women wear daggers?
Post by: Mairte on February 03, 2011, 10:37:13 PM
And how? I have been thinking about it but not completely decided how to go about buying and what to buy.

I've seen them hidden in cleavage, with the handle poking up and out, if that helps.

I wear one hanging from my belt on my right side.  My friend Carol wears her in a holder on the side, too.

Hmmm. Are there holders for up the arms, under the sleeves?

 :D I can just see someone saying that!
Seriously though, does anybody sell or can something be made, I am thinking a bracer up each sleeve and holding a dagger. I am not particularily worried about it being historically accurate.

I do know that there are forearm sheaths-some leather shops actually sell the sheaths with the blades

 Are you asking historically, or for Faire wear?
I think Faire wear its mostly in the bodice with some on the forearm.

Historically, courtesans were the only ones who might carry daggers in the renaissance. And according to what little documentation there is, those would have been bodice daggers or in lower leg sheaths.

Did non-coutesans carry their eating knives?

  You said you weren't interested in being particularly HA,  so anything goes.
 If you want people to see the pretty toy, I'd wear it on your belt or in your bodice.

  To the best of my knowledge only males openly carried sidearms, however, women of all social stations would need to carry an 'eating knife/dagger' on their persons somewhere.
   I doubt those were kept in arm or leg sheaths, more likely they were carried on a belt, in a hidden pocket of a skirt or if nothing else, in the bodice.

I don't think she's really interested in H/A but;
For a lot of people in the Renaissance their only utensils were precious and kept locked up even if they were made of lead. This included eating knives, spoons and much later forks. They would not have carried their eating utensils around all day for fear of losing them. The cost of an eating knife could represent as much as two-months of labor for a peasant.
