Title: Loki Challenge Winners & Wrap Up!
Post by: PapaGnome on June 11, 2008, 11:07:56 AM
Greetings Folks,

We are writing to thank everyone who participated in this year's DG Loki Challenge!  We had lots of entries this year, a wealth of judges and many attendees to the challenge, itself!  We, the DG staff, can not tell you what a great time was had and how appreciative we are for everyone's interest!

The races for the winners were tight this year and there were many tasty bottles!  Here is a list of the final results:

Traditional Loki
1st Place - OCat
2nd Place - Teach
3rd Place - Lady Witts

"Flavored" Loki  (Drinks made with a loki base, plus additional flavoring)
1st Place - Trinn
2nd Place - Teach
3rd Place - John H

"Designer" Drinks  (Drinks made with alchohols other than a loki base)
1st Place - Lady Witts
2nd Place - Colt the Scout
3rd Place - Wiccaholly

We had MANY return entrants!!  Please, even if you didn't place this year, DO NOT hesitate to continue to enter!  Maybe 2009 will be YOUR year!!!

We'd like to send out special thanks to Mike P (DG Camp Organizer Extraordinaire) for doing SO much to make the Challenge a success this year.  We couldn't have done it without you, Mike!!!

Also, special thanks go out to Renshirts, Ren Tippers & Pyrate Prynts for donating prizes to all of our wonderful winners (as well as door prizes, too!)

There will be a few changes for next year's challenge.  (Clarification of types of drinks, submission containers, etc.)  So, if you'd like to participate in 2009 and would like stay abreast of the changes/updates/rules, please join the group at <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LokiChallenge>.

I'll help!
Of course... as the reigning Loki Lord  my very presence should be help enough, but any other help you may need I'm there for ya!
It'll be fun to watch as the peasants attempt to best me

(no fun if I don't get to talk smack before hand ya know)

*Butterrum or Almond or Lokiberry or ... so many winning choices... which shall I defeat them with this year?*

Yes...Goddess as so dubbed by the Celtic Rogues last year.  Hmmmm...wager...let me get to the tasting time in my loki and I'll think about it.  (One month)

BTW Scol...how many can we enter and what are the catagories...for the people that have never entered (me) and for those that don't have a yahoo account and can't join the group for that reason.

I'll cover that bet.

If I was in your shoes, I'd would be desperate to come up with a strategy to reduce my embarassment too.

Who in camp will appreciate the Pyrate the most?....hmmm
Title: Re: Loki Challenge

Boys...boys...what am I ever going to do with you!?  ;)

Zaubon...you must understand that Teach doesn't realize that the only reason he hasn't had any REAL competition is because I've never entered my Loki...I've usually only gone in for the day and never really went out to the campgrounds when they were holding the challenge.

And Teach...like I said I'll let you know if I'll up the ante once I get my first tastings out of the way...should be at the end of the month.

Hey Teach!
My friend is looking for his brother. Can you help him out with that? Or are you going to fold your tent and slip quietly into the night?

Not necessarily, if he does quietly slip away he can get a sip or two from the McLotofus liquor cabinet, if the other rum drinkers leave him any. If they don't, there should be enough Bacardi or something left to keep him from dying of dehydration.
Of course if he does meet the challenge, there will be two bottles in the cabinet. He might have a better chance of getting some by standing up and losing like a man.

Or when he meets and beats the challenge he will have 2 refills for his mug, haha.  I'm always good for a bottle for Teach so he might actually have enough this year, after he wins again!!!!!!!!!! :o

Hey Zaubon, I picked up a bottle of that yesterday. Do you think the full bottles will make it to TRF opening? Should I sample a bit of it each week, just to make sure it's not going bad? Have you tried their Vat 23? Couldn't find any at my local store.

Just checked. Nope, the Pyrat hasn't gone bad.

About the best rum and coke I've ever had.

I'll be starting my batches of loki next weekend, starting with traditional and traditional using orange blossom honey. For those looking for orange blossom honey (or any other honey), it's getting rare and expensive due to the bee die-offs. Bought three new cases of bottles to fill.

I'm looking for suggestions for recipes using cherry, stawberry, blackberry, coconut, banana, chocolate, Jamaican rum, and root beer extracts.

I think the coconut, banana, and rum extracts might make a good combo, along with the root beer and vanilla (root beer float). Cherry, stawberry, and blackberry for a Very-Berry blend.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

And yes Bacardi, I'm not Molden. Plank for ye.

No, doubt I'll enter.  Of course, if I'm not needed as a Judge this year (Tom/Andi let me know), I'll go for the gusto and enter my meager entries. I can only hope for a fluke.

With two bottles of Pyrate in stock, I don't see any major obstacles to you having a taste. Of course as the loser, you'll have to wait until the winner has her share, and of course all the other rum drinkers in camp will have first dibs before the loser gets his taste. If I run out of Pyrate, I think there's still some Sailor Jerry left over from last year. If not that, I'm sure we can find some Potters for the loser.

Having rum left over when Bicardi and I were both around should be an indication of the nastiness of it.
And as for losing, I think not.
It also occurs to me that while you are putting up a bottle you are losing a small thing to you as a non-drinker. I believe that you need to bet something... better... something as near and dear to your heart as my rum is to mine... suggestions?

I understand that my friend, but I realized that while I am putting up something that has value above the cost monetarily you would not be out anything more than a purchased item.
When I made my wager offer with Lady Jess, I knew that the loss of Pyrate would at least touch a nerve... but you my non-drinking friend... would only be out cash and a trip to the store.

Bought the fixin's for some more almond and some more lokiberry.
I should have about 10 jars each of those, plus I should have 10-15 teach's piss (butterrum) and (hopefully) 5 cinnamons
Just for advance information... for those who always seem interested in my jars... dunno why

Okay Teach, you want something emotionally important to me.
I normally don't attach emotions to things, I save those for people, but I did make an exception at LARF last year.
To commemorate a special weekend, with a special lady that also rides, I bought a model of a motorcycle. That is what I'll put up against your rum.
Title: Re: Loki Challenge
Post by: *Teach* on July 01, 2008, 06:37:55 PM
I cannot take that bet...
Rum is replaceable, that model isn't
The emotional attachment to my rum is fleeting and minor and not comparable
sorry bro...
Make a bet of something cheap and replaceable and your on my friend.

*I may love my rum... but when the bottle is empty I can get another one*

Okay, undecided on this.

If Andi wants me to act as a Judges-Judge this year like last year, I won't enter. If not, I have a few entries.

For information, since I judge BBQ contests in the Houston area and therefore have some training, a Judges-Judge makes sure that it is a double blind contest. The tasting judges don't see the entrants bottles (some are dead give-a-way). The Judges only score on  the plain cups that they see (which have a number attached to the bottom. Of course, in BBQ tasting, we have to remind them to only take a taste, since after 30 or 40 entries, they could get really stuffed). 2 years ago, at a VA hospital BBQ contest, a couple of judges volunteered for the beans, chicken, ribs, and brisket contests. They were really in pain after the ribs judging and the brisket tasting had them gasping. Of course, the Judges-Judge then had the honor of only eating the best entries of each group.

I'm sure Andi will be posting the rules in the next few months, including the catagories (traditional, flavored, etc.).

Presently already bottled:

Traditional
Traditional, using orange blossom honey

Presently being tested (as in flavor/mixture) and adding Everclear later when the mixture is stabilized:

Root beer float (root beer extract and vanilla)
Pina colada (rum, banana, and coconut extracts)

Future experiments:

Strawberry
Blackberry
Cherry
Chocolate

Last years banana split was pretty much a flop, even though the added cherry gave a thrill. The pina colada was lame, so this year's has rum extract. But as Teach so pointed out "why rum flavored drink when there is real rum?"

A. Look at the photos. Empress' Blue's Duckee is much to large to fit in the Goddess's box.
B. The chances of either of them coming to Casa Teach for anything other than a visit are vanishingly slim. The chance of both of them living there does not even exist

Ya know, it's funny to see you all bickering back and forth. Each of you claiming to be the "winner" of this competition, but isn't the true winner everyone that gets to drink the leftovers???

Although, if you are making any flavor other than the traditional recipe, you technically are NOT making LOKI, but you are making a flavored drink.  Being the purist that I am, well.. Let's just say that there is but ONE person that is truly the KING when it comes to actual Loki....and I have yet to see them post on this board (and probably won't because they don't tend to do the whole techie computer thing).

besides.. I have a bottle of my own brew which is three and a half year old stuff that would knock your socks off which would mean the duckee and the lunchbox would be MINE mwuhahahahaha

What is this mysterious person's name?  Just curious.

As for me, I pieced together the recipe from the forum last year, confirmed it with some people that make it, and I still have 4 bottles left over from Aug 07.  I hope it still good!

Ok well I know a name, but I'll keep it to myself. Of course since I am on the West Coast and wouldn't be hounding him anyway.

On the bright side, I have the entire market for Loki cornered since no one within 300 miles seems to know how to make it!  :)

Ah Brother Dragon... you know I make a traditional and a flavored
And, I don't believe I have ever seen you turn down either. In fact, I believe the general response from you is more along the "More Please" lines...

I have to agree that the true winners are the judges. Maybe when I retire my crown as Loki Lord I shall gave such a try.

Your more than welcome to enter yours in the competition... and of course lose to me in the end. That being said, if you want to join in the bet you of course would have to put up something of equal value...

And I will sweeten the pot and say that if somehow you manage to squeak by and beat me then I will be forced to enter unqueenly in revenge lol

Not that I am confident or anything

So you are the reigning Loki champ? Then please, impart some of your wisdom on me.  Since I am the sole representative of this sweet drink in the West, I have little to go on for inspiration.  So please tell me, what are the popular flavors of Loki at your fare?  Perhaps I will try to replicate a few and start the trend anew in the West!
Title: Re: Loki Challenge
Post by: PurpleDragon on July 08, 2008, 03:40:03 PM
Obviously Traditional.

But then there are the other flavors that people come up with..

Girl Scout Cookie (Tastes like thin mints)
White Chocolate Caramel (If you cannot find a tentmate with a bottle of this there's something wrong)
Peanut Butter Cup (Tastes Like a Reese's)
Ambrosia (Truly the nectar of The Gods)
Pink Stuff (More correctly called "Liquid Crack" as you just CANNOT get enough)

Just to name a few that I have had within the last few months... I'm sure there have been others, but hey I've sobered up since then.

the flavors vary almost from camp to camp
Traditional almond is well known and asked for by many. The one (non-traditional) flavor that most request of me is butterrum (has a butterscotch/rum flavor) followed closely by lokiberry (rasberry) and cinnamon (taste like liquid redhots).
I have also had in the past... chocolate, lemonade, blueberry, root beer and many other flavors that tend to dissappear fairly quickly.

*almost as fast as rum at my house*

Thanks to all who posted some flavor ideas. I am very interested in the berry versions and I'll have to play with that a bit.

Hmmmm.... years ago there was a rather large fellow on the faire circut, dressed as a monk of course, who would give out sips of "Screaming Purple Jesus."  I wonder if this happens to be the same stuff....  either way, I liked the name and I remember it being sweet.

Ummm.. since it was/is usually held in the campgrounds, there was no keeping any spectators that wanted to see it from doing so.  There was a time however when one had to be a member of CHAOS in order to compete, but that changed a few years ago. So the whole "Now that I am an official "Chaosian" type I get to go to stuff like that lol" Excuse doesn't fly on this one brother ;)

Jeez... you sound just like those whiners who CLAIM every UnQueenly they could do better and yet when the next time comes around those same people are nowhere to be found until AFTER it's already over and they are still saying the same bloody thing

I have no doubts who the king (or queen?) of unqueenly is brother...
I never went to it because I had understood it to be a Chaos event so I didn't even look to see where it would be held.
I never entered it because... well... last time I tried on a thong it took 3 weeks to find it again. Not shaving though... no... not happening
Perhaps... with enough liquid encouragement... who knows

Now, here's my question.  If you have to be drunk to do something, what's the point in doing it at all?  You won't remember it and in all honesty, it's no fun when your drunk, I've seen people who "Had to be drunk" to be in the UnQueenly, and I've seen people who were half-heartedly into it,  I've also seen those that signed up and pulled a no-show as well.  The thing is,  if you're gonna do it, then do it and have fun with it. Don't claim "I have to have a lot of Rum"... it takes all the fun out of it.

Come on folks, step and declare your intentions. Teach needs a run for his money.

About time for me to start cleaning up the travel trailer and loading the refrigerator. I'll be inline Thursday afternoon with my stock of traditional, traditional with orange blossom honey, rootbeer float, and pina colada. I'll be making up some more batches of other flavors this coming weekend.

Can I get a tenative time? We have our party starting at 9. Do we need to be present or can I send my loki ahead with a list of ingredients? :-) I don't care about winning but I'd like to have some of the loki connisuers tell me how it is.

you can drop your sample off right after closing.
The judging time is (I believe) between 9 and 10 that night.
I am not absolutely positve on the times though... anyone have a better idea on that?

Works for me. First time making something other than traditional loki for me and a group mate of mine, so we're gonna try our luck on our first batches.

Ladies and gentlemen and the rest of you drunks. I bring sad tidings. The prize offered by the Empress of the North. The Captain of her guard. Our own dear Darkke Duck, has been ducknapped!
The authorities have been notified and the SDC (Special Duck in Charge) of the local DBI Office (Duck Bureau of Investigation) informs us that inquiries are proceeding.
Luckily we do have a photo of a person of interest. This person is not a suspect, but she is the last person seen with Darkke and the DBI would like to ask her some pointed questions.
If you see this person, do not attempt to apprehend her yourself. Conact your local DBI Office and they will handle the situation from there. I heard mention of hostage rescue and termination with extreme predjudice, but have no idea what was meant by all that jabber.
Again, if you see this person contact the DBI. Local numbers for the DBI can be found in the front of your phone book.

In this time of concern and grief, I have collected some photos of Darkke's adventures this summer while he has been touring Texas with Clan McLotofus.
You can see some of the places he's been and the "things" he's done here:

Who is this scary looking mundane that has ducknapped Darkke? Do the DBI know her name or where abouts?

I am absolutely shocked and appalled by this horrific incident. Everyone, please believe that the Empire is doing all it can to apprehend the party responsible. The fact that a ducknapping of this magnitude has even occured has put the entire Empire on "AMBER ALERT".

We will do all we can to support the DBI in their efforts to find the crazy danes that committed this heinous crime...

:o As soon as I get paid the black one is so mine!  If only you had it in green that would make it even better.

Oh and I think I may have seen a Darkke Duck sighting today but I wasn't sure...it was pretty dark and I didn't have my camera with me.  It was only a glance but I'm sure it was the duck we're looking for.

Poor little rummie... out there lost and alone
Subjected to horrors unimagined
People even calling him by the wrong name...

*Maybe we should put pictures on rum and loki bottles... "Have You Seen This Duck?*

That may be the answer Teach. We all know how he likes to party. The only thing the DBI will tell is that "Inquiries are proceeding". I'm beginning to think that they're just giving me the run around and they're not really trying to find him.... :'(

I have suspicions that the "empire" has some corruption problems... no telling how high up this scandal may go

*rum bribes might work though*

The official spokesperson for the empire is on vacation this week, so I'll have to give our official position on this.

"DUCKWATCH 08" has now begun on all four corners of the empire. Darkke Duck, Commander of the Guard for the Empress, has gone missing. We are exhausting all efforts to locate the sick and twisted individuals that have taken our favorite little soldier. We hope to see his safe return within the next few days.

I personally will be on watch, lighting a candle for the health and well being of my rubber-feathered companion.

Title: Loki Challenge Reminder From Indigo/Andi...
Post by: PapaGnome on September 30, 2008, 12:28:36 PM
Just a reminder that the DG Loki Challenge will be held 9:00p.m. Saturday night, opening weekend of TRF at the DG camp. We're still looking for more judges and drink entries, so if you're interested let us know asap. You can join the Loki Contest yahoo group and go to the database to enter your drink.

I'll be printing out the judge and entry lists for my records on Wednesday night before opening weekend, so make sure we've got your info by then. There will be a prize for the winner of each category.

All the drink entries need to be turned in Friday night if possible. We'll still take them up to 6:00p.m on Saturday, but I'll be in faire most of the day so you might not be able to catch me on Saturday. We'll be camped as usual around row 3, up by the paved road, in the white trailer with the big Chaos star on it's end.

Entries should be in an unidentifiable bottle so the judges won't know who the maker was. Be sure to read the rules listed in the files section of the Loki Contest yahoo group.

Address to join the Loki Contest yahoo group is: 2008_DG_Loki_ Contest-subscrib e@yahoogroups. com

Come on, join up, you know you want to! lol

Oohooh... LOKI contest!  Count me in.. we'll in for the tasting and such anyhow.  Sadly I don't make any, but I certainly do have a fine pallet for it since I've tried a broad range of loki's from many different people over the years!!  Yeah Loki, my mouth is water now even thinking about it!

The only things I can say for sure are that, A. Darkke Duck is no more. Long live Rummie Duck! and B. Teach has a nice new pirate lunch box to carry Rummies rum supplies in.

But congrats to Teach's Bride, Lady Trinn!  What was the winning flavor?

I knew that Teach would do it.  A man who loves Rum knows the rest of his alcohols also.  He probably applied scientific principles to his winning formula.

Teach was #2....it was a young lass with red hots(cinnamon) that won.

Or did I misunderstand?

Oh no, you're not mistaken. Mr. Teach was beaten senselessly off of his mighty throne by the only one that could- HIS WIFE!!!

Huzzah to Lady Trinn, you deserved your win!

OK, so I was told by MANy rennies Sat night that the competition was to be held in the large blue and white tent in the Gnome area next to safe haven.  So we showed up a little after 9 on Sat night and no one was there.  We wanted around that area for a bit and gave up.  We went to the Green Flame party instead.  So what happened here???  I am so crazy upset I missed it.  I just thought it had been cancelled due to unforeseen things or maybe broken up by security?

Let me say once again on here, Congratulations the the Lovely Lady Trinn on winning the Loki Challenge (flavored)!
Who knew I would be training the next champion? Actually I was pretty concerned going into it... I knew how good hers was. Believe it or not, the winner was from her very first batch of cinnamon loki... nearly 2 years of aging there.
I won second place in both flavored and original. The guy who won original was taught by the inventor of loki... so I am pretty ok with that placement as well.
When I went back to camp, I was asked several times by different people these two questions:
1- How did it feel to get beat by your wife?  Actually, it felt very nice. Losing to the one you taught is only eclipsed by losing to the one you Love. I got both of those.
2- How did it feel to lose 1st place? I dunno... I won second... didn't lose anything.

The Loki Lord is dethroned, Long Live the Loki Lady! The Lovely Lady Trinn!
Now, on to next year... I will be there again!

*at least I still have me rum*

Thanks everyone! Believe me...it was a total shock to even be in the top 3, much less win! For those that asked, I won with a cinnamon flavor called Cupid's Spicy Butt....taste like liquid red hots. Yummy!!

What's the oldest bottle of Loki you've got?

I got a bottle a year old.  Think it's still ok to drink?

Was it mixed with anything perishable? Did anything get inside the bottle that could be rotting?

I have some 7 year old loki, and I keep it in the fridge. It's quite smooth, only comes out for extra special occassions.
