Title: Margo's shirt/smock patterns
Post by: Sorcha on February 08, 2011, 12:24:21 PM
I have Margo's Gentleman's Wardrobe pattern set that includes a shirt.  I do not have the Lady's Underpinnings pattern set that includes the smock.
I know that historically men's and women's underclothes were similar....  So!  Can I use the men's shirt pattern to make a woman's smock?

They look fairly similar on the website except that I think the woman's pattern may have side gores to accommodate a woman's wider hips???   I don't have very wide hips so I don't think I'd need the gores.  And I think the the smallest men's size in the pattern would work for me.

Thoughts everyone???

Well, first off, you can do anything you want to! If it works, it works!

That said, IIRC, the smocks in Tudor Tailor are unisex, so it seems like your theory is sound.

Historically women's smocks/chemises were a bit longer than those of men, and often also a bit smaller in size. Decorations (embroidery, lace etc) could also be different. But the basic cut is the same. So I would say yes.

I wore my husband's without issue, aside from the size. Go for it!

Thanks ladies.
