YIKES!! Last night I cut out the skirt panels for my damask kirtle, and I just went to sew them together. Well, apparently this is the first chance I've had to really look at the fabric in bright daylight (like we'll have at Fair), and it looks totally different than it has over the last few weeks working on this in the evenings. I was planning on using the same "right" side that the tablecloth had used, but now I think I prefer the reverse! But I'm afraid I'm confusing myself.
So, good gentles, tell me which side you prefer:
#1: Original "right" side up; damask pattern appears darker than ground fabric:

#2: "Wrong" side up; damask pattern appears lighter than ground fabric:

I've been looking at damasks online, and it looks like it's traditional for the medallions/design to be paler than the ground.
Help! What doth the company decree?
Gramercy!!
(Oh, and you guys have about two hours to vote. ;D I want to get the skirt sewn together and/or the bodice parts cut out this afternoon!)
Personally, I prefer option 2! I think it pulls the eyes to the design more, and it will look exquisite in the sunlight!
... Plus, I think it's prettier that way ;) Good luck!
I like the wrong side, myself.
It is brighter & I agree, shows more of the design.
:)
Another vote for the second image/reverse side. That's gonna be pretty, Gem.
One more vote for "the wrong side" (#2)...to me, the "wrong" side just looks right ;)
I love the color of that fabric, I'm sure the finished garment will be gorgeous!
(of course, those who know me well know that kind of "in through the out door" logic is par for the course :P)
wrong is right and right is wrong....... :P
I'll second that

When working with Damasks, I reccommend that the Shiny Satin side be the correct side. The design, which is the matte, shows up better. Take the piece outside into the natural light and see which side jumps out at you.
Doing the reverse, all gets lost. #2 is your best bet, gem. That is what I am seeing.
Well, so far that's 11 votes for "wrong" (you guys + me + a couple needlework buddies), and a whopping ZERO for the way I'd planned to do it first! LOL
So wrong-side-up it is!

But... just to confuse things, check this out:

Can you tell which is which? Yep, the one in the foreground is the wrong-side-up version we all voted on. :-\ Hee! So I think the lesson here is that it's going to look different in all kinds of light... but I might as well pick the side that at least looks spectacular in SOME light!
Thanks, all!!
But even switched in this pic, the one furthest from you looks the best imho.

I know I'm late, but this is the right way up!
Dam, we're using the same head again... ;D
My eyes got dizzy from trying to figure that out. But I liked the original way. I think. maybe?
I like both. Use whichever one you prefer. I have used the same fabric for 2 different garments, just reversed the pattern
Yikes! I'm coming into this discussion WAAAAY late, myself, but better late than never, LOL!
Anyway, I have a little mantra that I recite when trying to figure out the right/wrong question, because for some reason, the "wrong" side typically looks better to me, too.
BUT just because it looks better may not mean that the "wrong" side wears better when worn as the "right" side, does that make sense?
So my Mantra IS: Shiny flowers BAD. Again: Shiny flowers BAAAD!!!
Which means that if the "shiny flowers" (ie: the pattern) is "shiny" and the background is matte, like Lady K said, it's the wrong side.
NOW, this does not mean that I still may not opt to be very BAD and go with the wrong on the outside, it just reminds me to take a VERY close look at the weave, pick at the satin stitches that make up the design on the "wrong" side and see if they're likely to catch easily. On some fabrics I've found that the weavers sometimes weave the satin on the "wrong" side too loosely and it is better in the long run to just stick to the Mantra (Shiny Flowers BAAAAAAD!!!) or find your hard work the best friend of sundry twigs and snaggly things.
Good luck, Gem!
