Title: Where can I find copper eyelets?
Post by: ArielCallista on February 11, 2011, 03:06:45 PM
Just as the subject says....Where can I find copper eyelets? I need about 100 1/4" bright copper ones, not the dark "antique" copper. I need them by Feb 20th at the latest, so if I didn't have to rely on shipping that would be best, but I'm willing to pay more for faster shipping...whatever it takes. I've checked Joanns, Hobby Lobby, Hancocks, Michaels, etsy, and ebay. Where else should I check? Is there a way to make some nickel ones copper? I know I can spray paint but I can't have the copper come off when I set them. Or ever. Since this is for a project for a grade. I'm really hoping one of my fellow seamstresses out there can help me out! :)

Did you try doing Google image searches, and clicking on the promising links?

Not finding precisely what you're looking for so far, but here are some one-piece 3/16" copper eyelets:

Can you use grommets?

Are these a little too small?

Copper is a very soft metal so I would think that it may not work very well with the stress of the tools that it takes to set the grommets.

Maybe you can just spray paint them to get the project done in time

Brass is much sturdier than Copper for grommets.

Though I never thought to perhaps paint them. I know there is Copper colred Embroidery Floss available.

I'm just afraid the spray paint would chip off...Is there some other way to like stain the metal...so it would look copper, but not peel off? I've seen copper grommets and eyelets on clothes and shoes before, but I can't seem to find any :(

If you lightly coat them in the paint there should not be a chipping problem. I dont know of any ways to stain metal.

Maybe an antique looking brass? That maybe coppery colored?

Copper works fine for eyelets and rivets. You can patina brass to give it an aged look, but you might consider using 3/16 as opposed to 1/4. You can find that size eyelet and grommets all over the place.

You can also take 1/4" copper tubing and cut it down to small parts and flange out each side to make your own eyelet. Done it a bunch, works fine.

This is a page advertising the Home Pro eyelet setter, but if you scroll down there are bright copper eyelettes, rivets and grommets. I believe you can order these seperatly without purchase of the machine.

I forgot about that place. I've ordered eyelets from them before, you can get them without the machine.

i spray painted eyelets a bright gold and tried to beat them up for a lil wear and they held up just fine. put in kirtle and worn and still fine. i had gone to store planning to buy enamel like for models but ended up buying a spray.
