Title: Adding a lapel
Post by: Auryn on February 25, 2011, 02:32:04 PM
I was hoping for some help.

In the beginning of my sewing sickness, I made my bf a vest with some rather expensive material, I used Butterick 4828.
Now he wants the vest to have lapels.
Is it possible to add lapels to this design or am I better off just taking it apart and remaking it??

Given the shape of the neckline, I think you would do better to take it apart and add a collar and lapels.  You'd need to add them as a facing and add on the bit behind the facing...  It's a bit hard to explain.  I'll see if I can find the pix of the jacket I did with an added underside.  It might give you an idea...

Here you go:

Under lapel laid on jacket:

Lapel facing laid on lining, canvas side showing:

Lining and outer pinned together:

Sewing the two together:

The red was then trimmed back to the same width all round.  Finished lapel:

Excellent advice as usual, Kate!!!

What also helps is working with the original pattern shape about the neck and down the front to draft an additional pattrn piece for lapels. I have done that in the past when I worked at the costume shop years ago.

Good luck Auryn.
