I bought some pretty gold fabric to make an escoffion with, but I'm having trouble deciding how big it should be.
The one in the Lynn McMasters's pattern (http://www.lynnmcmasters.com/) (which is woven from ribbon) covers the entire back of her head:

Unfortunately, this is the only picture I can find of a real person wearing this type of headpiece. I remember a forum member made a beautiful one a few years ago and posted a picture of it--but a search didn't bring anything up so I think it was before we moved to the new BB.
I think this is basically just a decorated caul made from pretty fabric and possibly beaded, yes? I've made a basic linen caul from the directions at Drea Leed's site (http://www.elizabethancostume.net/headwear/caulmake.html), but it was much smaller than the McMasters escoffion, and I *hated* how it looked on me.
I've made up the Henrician Coif from the Tudor Tailor, but I think the bag is too "poofy"/stands up too much from the back of my head (http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL417/1033223/22511199/376230390.jpg) for an escoffion-type hat, so that's not really the look I'm after, either.
Does anyone have photographs of this sort of hat made up in real life (not portraits)? Advice on how big to make the bag/circle part?
Any other tips?

So I measure Around my head at the tips of my ears (I have rather small ears) Sorry I don'' have 1 picture of my Escoffion to show you!!! I do add a comb in the front and hair pins on the sides on the interior for me hold into my hair!
I am doing some research for my Wedding Renewal Gown because I think the head piece that is in the portrait is a late Period French Hood.
So people have lumped the Escoffion with the French Hood like this:

I wish it were a little deeper, as I have a little more hair now than I did then.
The pattern is very inexpensive, and really was a set of instructions rather than an actual pattern. It wasn't too difficult, but I broke a LOT of needles making it. As you can see in the first pic, I padded a styrofoam head to simulate my head size, plus hair, then marked up the muslin cover with the marks I needed to put together the escoffion.

Lady R, I'm actually wanting a shallower look to mine like that, but I'm planning to use just a gathered bag (not the woven ribbon), and I'm afraid of it ending up too baggy. I'm wondering if an oval instead of a circle would get me a cleaner look.
