There were 5 patterns in the new spring book!
Costume patterns? What are the other ones?

And did anyone else notice that the Titanic costume pattern was back on the website? However, it says it's out of stock, and though I emailed them a few days ago, I still haven't heard back. I really want that pattern!

*Edit* I got an email back from them this afternoon saying the Titanic pattern should be back in stock after next Wed. But since it claims to be an on-line only, now I'm going to have to decide if it's worth $7.50 to me or not. I'm so used to 99 cent sales!

See if the store can order it for you at 99 cents, or ask if you can at least use a 50% or similar coupon.

I saw these posted at Brass Goggles too! I'm thinking the #2172 coat could do double duty for both Steampunk and Pirate garb. :)

Got a flyer from Joann's today.  I'm downstairs, the flyer is upstairs, but I think it was April 10-16, not sure though.

Simplicity patterns, $1.99.
McCall's 99 cents

OK, let me be snarky for a moment: there's nothing steampunk about that pattern. OK, so the shoes are cool and the other is wearing goggles on her head and an hourglass in her hand. OK, so there's a sort of clock in the background, and the dresses has dark, bold colours.

But the actual DRESSES are quite standard Victorian light. They have no details I would consider steampunk. For that you'd need technological inventions, machinery, steel details, gears, quirky details, straps and buckles and whatnot. Steampunk is historical dressing mixed with fantasy or science fiction, with a basis of the new technology of the late Victorian era. The clothes needn't be Victorian, though, they can also be Edwardian, Tribal, Rococo, cyber etc. But the details should be in the actual clothes and not just the props. To me these are way better examples of steampunk:

(The firs is author G. D. Falksen, the second is from steampunk Wicked in Copenhagen)

I KNOW I am snarky in this matter, but steampunk is such a cool sub genre, and I admire anyone who does it well. I fear that people won't get the desired result if they pick up that pattern to make steampunk. It would make a cool Victorian dress with a twist, but the pattern lacks the punk.... and also the steam...

The new SIMPLICITY pattern might be cponsidered blase, but there are some really good possibilities to it. That involves fabrics used, trims, laces, etc.

My Apprentice Elizabeth has the pattern and is making a layered version with two different fabrics to contrast, Black Gimp, and Black Lace. For the skirt, she added 2" in length at the bottom and made the top part a casing for elastic. She is in the process of making the bustle in the fabric that matches the lower skirt ruffle.

The main fabric is a red on black paisley design. The contrast is a Black Quilted-like designed taffeta. The Jacket/Blouse is going to be made of the Paisley fabric with added Gimp and lace at the waist area. Black Shank butons fown the front and sleeves.

YOU!  You are the reason that all three of the stores I went to this weekend were sold out of the pattern!  (Ok, maybe not but seriously this must be one popular pattern)

I agree the pattern is market but with some tweaking and altering it can make a fantastic steampunk outfit. I plan on using it as a foundation pattern for future designs. If you add or tweak in the right accessories I think the result can be called steampunk.

Yes, I did it. I was the reason why two of the three Jo-Ann's in the NC "Triangle" area were sold out of the pattern. Some of them didn't even make it from the packing box to the pattern drawer. >:) Don't worry - the stores will stock more as I think I have enough of them. :)

I'm using it for a pirate coat too. Actually, I was already designing a pirate coat very similar to the jacket in the pattern. I want a combination of boned bodice and coat-tails type jacket. What a relief I won't have to do all that draping and pattern-making!

Thank you sooo much for saying that! I really dislike the patterns. They're ok MAYBE for a base. But just as is, they are NOT steampunk.

For my base I'm using http://www.simplicity.com/p-1769-costumes.aspx

It will be the style of the red dress but I'm taking the sleeves off. Then instead of the bustle, I'm making it a bird cage. Because my character is the heiress of a coal mine..Bird cage..Canaries..Yeah. I will also have a gas mask on, I think. Haven't decided just yet. My friend wants me to make an "air tank" to hook up to the gas mask as well. But I dunno.
