I am going to TRF for the first time this fall and was wondering if there are any helpful hints on attending. I'm sure the festival is much different from Ohio. People have warned me about scorpions and fire ants for example :P What should I expect when I go there? Are there any touristy faux pas? Also, I have a free day upon arriving in Texas, are there any suggestions of things to see, do, or eat while in the Houston area?
Thanks :D
Also, is there something I should see, do, or eat while at the fair? :)
As for touristy thing, where are you flying into. Texas has a lot of history, and touristy stuff, just depends on where you are in the state.
TRF is a whole different fair depending on what weekend you go. It can be 100 degrees on opening and 30 degrees at closing. If you told us which weekend you were considering, or what kind of weather you preferred, then I'm sure we could give you tons of advice.
I'm flying into Houston (IAH) and staying about 30 min from the fair and Houston itself (right in between) I'm attending 1000 Dreams weekend. Ohio renfest weather varies from in the 90s towards the beginning of the season and gets down towards the 60s towards the end of the season.
OHAI! You won't have any problems with scorpions out there, but ants, YES, but only if you're camping. TRF is a very large and "modern" faire. We have pest control that takes care of those things, so worry not. 1001 Dreams weekend usually proves itself to be in the 80s/90s, just check the weather before you come. You'll want to look at it for "Plantersville, TX", and that should tell you all you need to know.
Houston is chock full of things to do and see, so it just depends on your taste in food and fun.
If you need anything, feel free to message me :D
Thanks guys :D
As far as food at fair, the Polish sampler is a good choice as well as the Greek gyros. You should locate the Prince of Wales pub after you are inside. There is where you are likely to run into some forum members. 80/90 doesn't sound very hot, but 100% humidity is what really kicks your bratwurst. Remind yourseldf to drink plenty of water along with other beverages of your choice.
Wow really?! I thought Texas would be more arid than Ohio. Thats something to take into consideration... my garb options are getting slimmer by the second!! :D Everyone keeps talking about a certain ale there... is there something in particular that is good? Also... I'm thinking about braving the aligator... is it worth it?!
Our clan likes to look for deal on quality and quantity. It's like 9-12 bucks but the Polish sampler can feed two people very well, compared to 5-6 for just one item. The same goes for the Greek sandwich vs the Greek platter. Great food and reasonable price for the amount.
I do recomend hitting either the pirate aution or the drabbit drawing. If you have kids, go to the drabbit. If you like showy sharp things, go to the pirate. We typically tell people to go to sound and fury, ded bob, and arsene. Last year my DH decided that he loves Clan Tinker. If you like adult humor, I say go to Iris and Rose over by the polish area.
I recomend looking at a scedule online before you go, so you can map out what shows you want to see. This way you can see the shows you want, and still see the shops. Also pick a meet up spot. This faire is HUGE! If one of your group gets lost, having a central meeting place is a good thing. Our clan's is the Sea devil.
There are ALOT of shops at the faire, and depending on how many shows you see, you may not see all of them, so plan accordingly. I swear one Saturday, all I did was escort newbies from shop to shop, and didn't get to see shows. Another year newbies only wanted to see shows that I had seen before, and I had a hard time getting to see my friends, and see shops, so plan for it.
53 acres and more shops than you can shake a stick at! ;)
If you're a true carnivore, you'll bypass all the sissy-food recommendations above and go straight for the Prime Rib Trencher at POW Pub. :)
Seriously though, I haven't really ever had anything "bad" at TRF. To be fair I usually don't have to eat a whole lot after a trencher, but in the afternoon there's always room for a scotch egg, or gyro!
If you're a drinker, please please please, follow the above advice about staying hydrated. The humidity will zap it right out of you, and you will feel horrid if you stick to booze. Houston might as well be on the beach as humid as it is. Spoken from experience, I promise. :)
You guys are fantastic!

Comes from being only 40-50 feet above sea level and the only thing between us and the coast are a few stray cattle...
The place is humid, but I'm not talking Seatle/London/Scottland damp (IE moisture saps into EVERYTHING). Just keep in mind, that if it should get cold, the humidity will make it feel like it is even colder than it really is.
My clan monarch is a follower of the mead at the Sea Devil. To the point he has a bottle carrier he hangs around his neck, sticks a long straw in it, and just walks around faire drinking it like that. This is also the reason why he "fell asleep" at the Sea Devil 2 years ago. This is also the year he says he got 'bad' Etufe. But we say it 'might' have had something to do with the 4 bottle of mead he drank in one afternoon. ::)
Anyway, for every tankard of beer, make sure you drink at least 1 of water. Your body will thank you for it.
Do you guys have perm. restrooms or are they the truck o' toilets?
Thankfully we have the real thing!
Now I'm REALLY excited!! :D
And they ARE CLEAN! Scrubbed down regularly. ;)
Breakfast - Walk right in staying to your right the first food booth you see get a Scotch Egg, the line for them can get long quick. After you get your egg if you're a coffee drink go right across the lane to get some really good coffee.
Lunch - Prime Rib Trencher @ the POW (Prince of Wales Pub) About $13 but it'll feed 2. Think cut prime rib on a hoagie with fries. Or get the fish 'n chips a bit cheaper but it'll feed two as well...unless you eat a lot.
Dinner -Any of the other above suggestions...unless your camping then hook up with a group out there.
That is one of my suggestions to you if you want to have some fun after the faire closes. Park on the camping side not the main entrance side. The parking is usually better and after the faire closes you can hang out for a bit until the traffic dies down...which is usually an hour or two after the faire closes.
The show that Lady Stitch suggested are mine as well...especially Sound and Fury!
If you like mead may I suggest you try Thorin's mead when your here...please avoid the Chaucer's. A bit higher in alcohol content but not as sweet as the Chaucer's so you'll want to pace yourself. ;)
One thing I have noticed for me is that I spend so much time walking around I am hungry all the time lol! You can definitely work up an appetite walking the grounds. Plus there are so many food choices it's hard to not want to try everything. Keep hydrated like everyone is saying.
Get there early! Get into the parking lot by 8:15- 8:30 AM. you can get a good space and take in the gate show. The traffic can get pretty bad after 9 or so.
You can't go wrong with any of the food choices mentioned here, the only problem is there are so many!
If you are coming all the way from Ohio the food I would suggest is the French section. You can try stuff there that you aren't as likely to see up there like crawfish, gator and etouffe' just to name a few.
Texas in that area is not arid at all. About half the state (and it's a big 'un) is pretty rainy and the other half (where I live) is in the midst of the worst drought in years. Houston and eastward are getting into the swampy land like Louisiana. Humid doesn't begin to describe it. I had a good friend of mine when I lived on that side of the state who was from Ohio. She almost never left her house outside of our two weeks of winter. Just to hot/humid.
I just want to make the point that if you aren't used to our weather be careful. Drink A LOT of water. Go easy on the heavy drinking until you come out to visit us all in the campgrounds after faire.
*If you are worried about it, I will be happy to drink any amount of rum you wish on your behalf*

I've yet to really try Thorin's..but I know I love me some Chaucers!
I always set up right across the gravel road from Thorin in the campground. He is one of the few folks to come over and hang out with us for a bit. I tried some last year, that and some stouts he had. Pretty good stuff.
If you're looking for something a bit lighter, you can't beat the fruit and cheese platters you can find around the grounds.... and the frozen Sangria is wonderful!!! Also don't forget the bakery for a sweet treat before you leave in the evening! It's the perfect way to round off the day...
and when in doubt, the ravers are usually too slow to escape even the laziest of hunters in the mornings.
...what? I'm just sayin', kill two birds with one stone- feed guests, get rid of ravers. Don't look at me like that, its not cannibalism... they're ravers, not the same species :D
The Giant German Burger is really good and filling, and could be shared by 2 people if you also get an appetizer or dessert.
There are also Sweet Potato Curly Fries in the French area. Mmmm...
Someone mentioned last season that there's a booth somewhere that has baked Sweet Potatoes. I looked for it, but didn't find it.

Baked Sweet Potatos (& regular ones) are in the last group of food booths before you get to the Globe Theatre. Usually a line at lunch time.
Oh! The regular loaded baked potatoes with the beef stew or the roast beef are wonderful!!!
Partial to the BBQ myself.
And for the uninitiated, these are the big meal-in-itself taters & not the smaller side size.
I haven't tried the BBQ, yet... may have to do that this year!
I apparently haven't been making my meal rounds...my food experience has been limited to scotch eggs, hamburgers, the polish platter (me and blood sausage have a love/hate relationship),and chicken on a stick..seriously..that's it. Oh and the Sea Devil's fish and chips.
??? You mean, you haven't tried the pizza slice back in Sherwood Forest? I don't recall that being mentioned so far here, either, btw... it's tre nommie! Oh, but the chicken-on-a-stick back there is pretty amazing, also!!!

Mouse... kielbasa is not blood sausage.
The fried mushrooms on a stick are really good-I get them every time I go!
I miss the crawfish sausage they used to have. Claim they can't get it anymore but I have seen it other places.
It goes without saying that you gotta have a turkey leg. They're tasty. Some other good stuff is the empanadas and the gyros, but I think that was already mentioned.
Yes, the turkey legs are very good. I just burned out on them about 1985.
I try not to have them all the time that way I don't get burned out by them. I usually get one if the mood strikes. However, the empanadas and the fried mushrooms are definitely a go-to for me.
Ahh, but you forget that Ravic is there everyday, all day.
Talk about dedication. If I had to stay as close as he is to the Prince of Wales, StudMuffin would have to carry me home.

See? I did not know that. I would be burned out on them too, if that was the case! :)
Ahhh, but Ravic's rosy-cheeked smile doesn't let on as to whether or not he's actually given in to the temptation to sample the wares of the POW, or not... but perhaps he's managed to build up a tolerance to the temptation itself, over the years! ;) :D
I need me a tater now, and there ain't none here. I just can't wait for my Friday nights at Hickory Hollow with my best friends during rehearsals (which will be starting up in early August). Me and them usually see about eating our weight in chicken fried steak on Friday nights. It makes me SO HAPPY!

Mmmmmm Gyros. I think TRF has the most tasty, delicious, scrumptious Gyros EVER!
Ok, I'm about to start whimpering now for lack of Gyro goodness...
They are quite yummy!
Through this thread I have been learned so much. I've had too look up half the foods you all have mentioned. I'm still curious about how gator tastes. Someone also told me you can get fried cactus at the Dairy Queens (still not sure if I believe it). I think this may be the best vacation ever!! I would love to stop and say hi to you all :D 139 more days and I'll be in Houston!!
Gator is good if it's cooked right, it can get tough if overdone.
Taste like chicken?
More like frog ;D
Ew.
But... but...
('splody head, now...) :o
Lol I'll probably still try it anyway. I mean... when else am I going to have the chance to eat alligator?!
Yeah, its pretty cool to turn the tables on them once in a while.

Yeah, it's like, dark meat chicken I think. Only, not LOL!

LOVELOVELOVELOVELOVEEE the mushrooms! I only just discovered them this last season, thanks to Kelly (The pink mistress on TRF French Court).
I've learned to try and shy away from the messy foods, but sadly those are the BEST. Gyros and Empanadas are good..unless they are running down your leg and falling in your bodice! Fairy weekend (1001 Dreams) my poor fairy costume took quite a beating thanks to a Gyro >.<

What is the best vegetarian/preferably vegan food at TRF? Any recommendations?
I'm pretty sure there are a couple of places in the Agora (the Greek quarter) that have vegetarian plates, although I couldn't promise vegan, because I haven't looked that closely.

The TRF website lists all the food vendors and such. I know there are some gluten free, peanut free type of items at The Queens Pantry and I believe they have vegetarian items. The pantry is to your right as you enter the gates. In the Spanish area you will find fresh fruits and such. And like Rani said, The Agora has some tasty items. I don't know much about what is vegetarian vs. vegan but you should be able to find lots of yummies. :)
The beer and ale is vegan, right? ;D
Beer, yes Beer! Bread in a bottle!
Feeling th' gravitational pull of a prime rib trencher at Prince of Wales...all the way in North Carolina! ;)
Speaking of, it feels hot enough today to be opening weekend at TRF! LOL!
Strawberries (and other fruit) on a stick.
Eat the royal Hamburg in the German area! Yum! (obviously not addressed to the vegan lol)
Also the monte cristo is awesome it is down France way and I am fond of the loaded BBQ baked potatoes near the globe.
As far as vegetarian choices I know Queens Pantry has veggie wraps that are delicious. There are fruit plates down the lane you walk down if you hook a left when you come in the gate... that is also where they have the chocolate covered cheesecake!
If you can get over to the empanada stand in SPain and try a banana empanada... yummy!
Fae, do you know if you'll be back there again this year?
Well I haven't bee formally asked back yet. They haven't sent out Performance Co. contracts yet... but if they do send me one yes I will be back and I'm pretty sure they would keep me over in Germany... but you never know! :P
I hope so! We never did get to get back there and see you in your nest, and Scally and I were both bummed to have missed it! We'll make a point of finding you this year, though! ;)
Well I cannot absolutely guarantee a nest... but if I'm there there will be antics to be had!
And schnauzers, I'm sure! ;) heheh
Maybe. It all depends on what they want me to do... personally I am itching for a new character... german or not... I feel like I have played Birgitte out but I'll do whatever they want.. I'm just happy to be on cast! (all this assuming I am asked back... I have to put that disclaimer out there!)
I know, right? I hate that damn disclaimer. I want to KNOW already!
I have the feeling we'll be seeing you both! And I'm sure what/whoever ever they've got the two of you playing, we'll all be laughing so hard it hurts!
If I get to play the character I currently have in my mind it will be amusing yes!
and Niki... I hate that disclaimer so much. I feel like we won't know anytime soon because of Oliver lol.
From a former Ohioan to another. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate. You have NO idea what hot and humid is until you feel Texas in all her glory. If you carry a purse or pouch, go to the baby section of Wal-mart and buy some Pedialyte packets you can pour into a bottle of water, us them, take it from someone coming from where you are, You'll need them. It doesn't matter how well you tolerate the heat in Ohio, it's not the same here. Find some show in the early Afternoon to sit and watch and find some shade to cool off in.
But you will enjoy the faire, that I can guarantee. Also be prepared to walk. Don't be disappointed if you don't see the whole thing in 2 days, I didn't. My first ever Ren Faire was TRF, we're going back the last weekend over Thanksgiving, when I'[ll have 3 days to take it all in and it's cooler and I can wear my cloak and not pass out.
Have fun and enjoy you'll never see anything like it again. Unless of course you return next year.
You are so correct Lady Gryphon, hydrate. It takes a long time to adjust to the weather here in Texas. Even different parts of Texas vary on climate, so much so that even those of us that have lived here a long time or for a lifetime have to take caution when traveling to different regions within the state.
The weather during TRF is always interesting, never know what you will get one day to the next or even one hour to the next lol. :)

Just be careful who you associate with... ;) ;D
I don't know anyone who has actually been to jail as either a result of, or a side effect of, anything that has happened in either Faire OR the campgrounds... so I'm guessing you'd have to try pretty hard to end up there! :D
After being at TRF for over 30 years, I've seen a few hauled away from inside faire. Seen several one taken out of camp to county.
true, but most of them blatantly deserved it. Methinks Merlin is not the sort to toss kegs into the bonfire, start brawls, seduce wo... okay, that one he's probably guilty of :D
Although I could surely be wrong here, I'm going to guess none of those carted off were RR/Fer's?
not to my knowledge, mostly ravers and a few "good ol' boys" who wanted to start fights after imbibing to excess (read: borderline alcohol poisoning)
Pretty much what I figured. So Merlin should be able to rest easy as long as he hangs out with us, then! :D
And last I heard, seduction between adults wasn't an actual crime... ;)
Depends on the wife. oh, wait....
As far as faire toss-outs, remember that even the best of us can have our moments of The Stupids. Just saying...

Yeah, but when was the last time you heard of a 1000+ year-old wizard seducing
anything? Even the
sheep are safe (I do have a wee bit of Scot in meh).
Ummm... I'm thinking your lady-wife might have something to say about that! I mean, wasn't there some claim about solar panels and sex machines made not too long ago? And if you're not busy seducing your own wife at every opportunity, then I'd say you're definitely fallin' down on the job!!! :P :D
I don't have to seduce Nim...she's hot for old wizards... Luckily, I'm the only one left. But, I promise...I take very good care of my Nimue! :P
Hey... if you're not putting at least a little effort into it, then she's getting the short end of the stick! :P :D
Every romantic relationship should retain that element of seduction, no matter who's doing the seducing... ;)
I saw a guy get arrested around the fire cesspool last year, but I'm sure that is not uncommon. It's the first time I had bothered to walk over there in the 4 years I've been camping.
I haven't been over there yet, either... but so far I haven't really had time to head over there, since just about every minute is taken up with people I actually enjoy hanging out with! Why go where the idiots are when all the awesome people are in various camps? ;) heheh
Yeah about the only time we go to that area is to get a laugh or two at the 'not the sharpest knives in the drawer' lol.
It's a shame there isn't a drum circle with drummers who are not also intent on poisoning themselves with alcohol. I don't like that kind of energy in my rhythms, so I just avoid it...
It was just myself and another camp mate, the other guys had already went to bed. We stopped by some large group that had nice campers, a light show, and what looked like a disco ball. Like maybe 50 yards back from the main fire circle. They had dancers and drummers going, but as it tapered off we walked over to the big one. Just ended up chatting with a police officer for a bit and leaving. To much tension up there, like folks looking for trouble.
That's generally what I hear about the main circle, so I avoid it. Don't really want to carry my drum all over the campgrounds looking for people to play with, though... and to be honest, I never really seem to have the time to play, anyway. Way too many people there who I only get to see for one weekend a year, and we have a drum circle here every weekend, so mostly I roam around collecting hugs... and Loki samples! ;) heheh
So, in summation- hydrate, eat lots of good foods, avoid the main bonfire, find RFers and hang with them. Oh, and never, ever, EVER enter a port-a-potty while Fraser and Nasty are hanging around, trying (badly) to look innocent :D
Nice summary, B... :D

If it can happen for Hugh Hefner...
Last year was my first time and it was WONDERFUL. We went for 1000 dreams weekend and then again for Halloween. I did learn that during the day it may be super hot but at night you might freeze in your tent so be sure to pack accordingly. I say that and I live in Texas and am use to the weather but I'm not a camper usually.
Also, the big bonfire was tons of fun, just stay away from anyone who tries to make trouble. It is patrolled pretty regularly so I didn't see any actual problems. Also, unless you really like jello shots and are not shy take note of the guy who gives jello shots for a flash. He is usually set up by the bonfire and he is a really funny guy but that isn't my thing. I show mine for free no shots needed! :P jk
I met wonderful people there last year and I am sure that you will do the same.
I am also really new to this forum, i.e. today, and would love to get to know more people!

Don't get too friendly with this one. He tends to bite. ;)
Just kidding. Welcome to the fray.
I only nibble... you know that Elo! :D
*Like a drunken wolverine*
Welcome to our little home away from faire... step right in and pull up a chair.

Lol, that rhymed, Frasie. ;) And ..I heard..WOLVERINE!!? You and my new beau have something in common, then, if you're both Wolverines!
Also: Welcome to the mess, April! It's good to see new faces out and about on here. Hopefully we all will get to welcome you in person at some point during faire season! ;D
I'm the kind of wolverine that when you poke me with a stick, you get a pile of wood shavings and a stump back.
*get a tourniquet*
Unless i like you... then it maybe a a peck on the cheek. ;)
Hmmm... depends on what form that liking takes, I think. Some of the people you "like" get suspended over the fire to roast a little... ;) :D
Fraser, remind me to tell you the story of why I must now smack you with a fish for bringing up bad memories :P
I'll take a fish over rabid weasels.
*Very Jimmy Page of you*
Bite? No one here bites, except on request.
[whistles quietly, looking all innocent and stuff]
*giggles*

Wait... you guys are talking about being flogged with rabid weasels, slapped in the face with fish, Rapier is whistling about his innocence... and Fraser's arse has somehow made it into the conversation, as well... and yet it is
ME that has done this "fracturing?!? :o ::)
I would be speechless... but you know that just
never happens. :P :D
LOL, thank you Juju and I will keep the biting in mind and watch out!
bah! Someone had to go and warn her :P
:) it was bound to happen
pfff biting is the least of her worries...
Ravers, rabid drummers, naked slip-n-slide, drunken revelers, wandering parties, etc etc etc
She's in mortal danger of having a good time. ;D
And leave it to Fraser to home in on the one who announces that she flashes for free... no Jello shots needed! :D
Don't worry, April... they're all a LOT more talk than anything else... and most of them even keep the rabid weasels in their pants... uhhh... on their leashes!!!
But we DO all know how to have a good time!!! ;) :D
Aaaand I'm pretty sure that we... and when I say "we" I'm sure you all know who I'm talking about.... have managed yet ANOTHER thread-jack, and in less than a week!
I think we may be contagious... :o
Damn, we're good... ;D
Well... SOME of us are good... and SOME of us are bad... very, VERY bad. :P :D
Notice that I'm not pointing any fingers here... I think everyone can figure out which is which without my help. ;)
Great!!! I can see that I will have alot more fun then I even did last year! ;D
This is why we can't have nice things! ;D
Hey! I haven't broken anything ALL WEEK!!! :P
Oh, uhhh... except for the pretty blue coffee mug I knocked off the counter on Monday... I forgot about that. Oops... :-\
Well, you know what they say; "Good guys finish last..." ;D ;)

:D
Well, that's rather fitting, then... since this is Randy's thread!!! ;) :D
Besides... it's all your fault!! You forced me to read that.. that... scene... this morning, and I've been distracted all day!!! :P
"distracted"? Is that the new euphamism?
Oh, I can prove it alright. The question is; who's word are you going to take for it, mine or hers? ;D

See... that's the problem. If it's someone else saying it, it's all just hearsay... and as we all know, that's not admissible as evidence. It proves nothing to ME... :P LOL

Fraser's right... I think that "Unfounded Boasting and Bragging" thread is in some other forum, entirely! :P ;) LOLOL
Psst... Randall's thread is elsewhere...
hee hee hee... must be lack of sleep... :D
[facepalm]
sleep is soooo over rated.
Hey, wait... I didn't start all this... it was someone else entirely! :o
In fact, I think it was you, Fraser! :P Don't think anyone missed the way you slid in there as soon as jello shots and flashing was mentioned... ::) :P heheh
My memory is as sharp as ever... even if I can barely hold my eyes open. Besides, Randall's thread isn't in John's Inn, either, but this sort of thing does seem to kind of... I dunno... spread itself everywhere we all post, doesn't it? ;D LOL
:P
:D
Careful who you stick that thing out at... you could wind up in all sorts of trouble! :o
well well. dont sign in for a day and look what happens!!! ill make sure not to mention jello shots and flashing again... :P of course that means fun missed....

April... we all know what goes on at the main bonfire... :D We just all have MUCH more fun in our camps, not having to deal with the idiots who do things that get them, or someone else, either hurt, arrested or waking up in the middle of the road naked, and wondering why certain parts of them hurt. :o

No need to be jealous... just wander on over and hang out! There are several camps full of R/Fer, and in the next 3 months while waiting for Opening you'll likely talk to lots of us who will be there, and get directions and such that will lead you right to us! :D Look around at some of the other threads here in the TX forums, and get acquainted! ;)

Who's talking about the entertainers? We'll all be camped in the regular campgrounds. The participants camps are located inside the fence, and you're right, those are off limits to everyone except participants.
I know we all SEEM incredibly entertaining... but we're mostly just playtrons, like everyone else. :D There are a few of the participants who post here in the forums, but for the most part we're all just there to have fun!
I prefer to think of myself as adding color to the experience. ;) :D
since I am no longer beating metal into funny shapes and working there for the first time in, oh, 20 years, I have no idea what to do with myself. Therefore, I hereby appoint myself Fraser and Nasty's official we-might-have-alcohol-poisoning-we're-not-sure-but-there-are-three-squirrels-on-that-bench-and-the-middle-one-is-talking accompanying medic :D
either that, or I will be chasing after women because my wife will be at that stage in her pregnancy where she is literally kicking me out the door to go bed someone else, I dunno.
Well, I'm sure it will be highly entertaining just following them around all day!
The REAL party starts once everyone gets back to the campground, however... since most everyone is working off the main edge of their buzz wandering around Faire from shows to shopping... so you might find yourself a bit overwhelmed by the sheer size of your task! :D
