Title: New Butterick patterns!
Post by: Lady Rebecca on May 28, 2011, 04:23:38 AM
I went into Hancock's today, looking for the Butterick stays pattern, and was excited to see that they had two new costume patterns - http://butterick.mccall.com/b5663-products-14513.php?page_id=916 (http://butterick.mccall.com/b5663-products-14513.php?page_id=916), with assorted Victorian lace caps, and http://butterick.mccall.com/b5662-products-14512.php?page_id=916 (http://butterick.mccall.com/b5662-products-14512.php?page_id=916), with some nice looking Victorian front and back lacing corsets. Since Hancocks has Butterick (and McCalls) patterns for 99 cents this weekend, I snatched them up!

Ooh, very nice! It actually looks like you could get a pretty decent renaissance snood out of that Victorian cap pattern.

Anyone know if that corset is actually functional?  The pattern looks really nice, but looking at it on the model, it doesn't seem like it's actually doing much on her.  Wondering if they made it the wrong size (or the pattern itself has ridiculous amounts of ease that needs to be accounted for), or if it's a "corset," rather than a corset.

To my eye it looks a lot more like a "corset" than a Victorian corset. The heart neck opening and the placement of the straps is features not often seen in extant Victorian items. Ditto for lacing in front - it would usually be a busk there. But it also seems the pattern account for doing changes so you can make more authentic looking stays than the one the model is posing in.

I like the head pieces.

the corset looks like it could work with a little tweaking
