Title: Houston Apollo-Con June 24-26
Post by: Tink on June 11, 2011, 05:13:27 PM
Was just wondering who all was going.  Also, anyone who has attended in previous years, can you tell me how to prepare and what to expect?

we were planning on going to run Dark Nova demo games, but everyone is still financially wiped from Comicpalooza, so alas, we'll have to do it next year :(

I can understand that.  I wasnt able to attend Comicpalooza, which I know was a blast, so I was hoping at least some of you crazy kids would be out at A-Con

oh, believe me if I can swing the finances I will be there, but I won't know that for another week, at which point they will have closed out the gaming openings.
Bah.

The Houston Browncoats run a Firefly LARP there so I went last year. It's a much smaller con. It's more about the panels and workshops than anything. I know the Executioner was on one of the writing panels last year if I remember correctly. They don't have a program schedule up yet, but usually it is writing, movies and NASA related. There's also many games going on.

Is it a necessity to pre-register for anything I think I might want to do, or is there walk-in options?

The husband and I will be spending the weekend there for our anniversary, and are looking forward to it :)

The Girltourage and I will be out all weekend, as we have for the last 8 years. If you see us, as about our jello-shot based con-within-a-con; Jello-Con 2011!  :D
ApolloCon is primarily a literary con, but they usually have a little of everything, good panel discussions, art show, dealer room, costuming, gaming, media room, con suite, etc. It's a casual event, and there are no additional registrations for stuff once you get in the door.  Expect a smaller event than Comicpaloza though.

As always, I'll be the bald guy in the kilt.....

Myself, Lollie, and my Wolverine (read: the boyfriend) will likely be there. Trying to decide right now if we want to get a hotel room and party all weekend, or just day trip on Sat or Sun..

Mr. Sparrow, you should spend Saturday at Apollo con.  Some of your crew will be out there!  :)

Zardoz, if Im not participating in an event, like a LARP session, or the trivia game, or costume show, or whatever, am I still allowed to watch?  Or are those things only open to the people participating?

There are no "closed events" at Apollocon, once you pay your registration all the discussion panels and workshops are open to whoever wants to sit in, the costume contest is done in front of an audience, author readings, art show, con suite (free chow), room parties, etc..are open to all, the more the merrier. Our trivia game contestants are pulled from the audience, and we even have some prizes for audience participation.  I don't know if folks can see the actual LARP games, but they have demos that everone can watch.

Look forward to seeing y'all there

The best day to attend Apollocon, if you can only be there for one day, is Saturday since that is when the biggest events occur. There is so much going on that even though it is a smaller convention, you'll have to pick what you'll participate in.

You can purchase membership at the door. It entitles you to admission to all events including panel discussions, videos, gaming, art show, costume contest, dance, hospitality suite, dealers room, etc. Some events, like tastings, have a maximum attendance so you need to sign up for those first thing.

The Executioner (and I) will be there again this year participating on panels and auctions and other craziness. It's good fun!

I'll probably show up on Saturday...probably. Just need to find some motivation

Your motivation is that at least Zardoz and I (and I'm sure others) will be there, and we're awesome!  :D

The sad news is I just received an email informing me of a possible work meeting on Saturday. So now it all depends on the time of said meeting...blargh

Just FYI, They have had some delays, but the schedule grid is up on the Apollocon website,
http://www.apollocon.org/pgm_grid.html  so you can plan your day if you wish.

As I mentioned before, I'll be MCing the Starbase Houston Trivia Challenge at 2 pm on Saturday, in the Kansas City room. Come on down for a chance to test your Sci-Fi trivia skills for fun and prizes! Look for our flyers.

Do they know that you received the email, or could there be possible email server problems?   ;)  ;D

No, they know, and yes it is mandatory. However it may NOT be happening on Saturday. If it isn't then I should be up there Saturday for some portion.

husband's costume (technically costume #4) is finally finished!  YAY!!!!  I'm proud of it (yes, I had a big part in making it) and am getting him to enter it in the masquerade  ;D

I hope to see a lot of familiar faces this weekend!!!!

This will be the first time I attend this con.  After having looked over the site umpteen times, I am in confusion as to the location - is it in the hotel?  Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks so much.  I went for a short time on Saturday, bought a couple of books from the vendor in the Dealers' Room, & had all my books signed & sketched by A. Lee Martinez.

Well, we survived the con OK, and had a good time overall. Sorry if I missed any of the faire family that may have been there! I managed to totally not recognize Tink, in spite of getting her in a picture of a well known Sith Lord.....

But don't worry, I wasn't lonely or anything.... :D

I'm so sorry I missed everyone! :( :( :'(

The Wolverine and I ran into a lack of funds, and neither of us would get paid until this week...so we had to skip it this year. :(

I hope everyone had an awesome time, though, and I'll make note to buy my tickets and make plans much farther ahead next year, so as to prevent fund shortages from interfering with my beloved Conventions!
