Title: I need to make a peg leg!
Post by: Sir. Kindle on June 24, 2011, 05:47:01 AM
Well, it seems a "small" set back has occurred and I seems I've found myself with a broken foot (the X-Rays aren't back yet, but judging from the pain and the doctors examination, we are both pretty sure it's at least a hairline fracture). :(

The problem I have is that I have several pre-paid events coming up, were I NEED to be in my pirate garb and I can't back out of them. At first, I was thinking I might use some boot covers and a really large shoe to "hide" the cast (or, at least, paint the cast black, to match my other shoe. However, I'm now thinking that maybe, just maybe, I can somehow construct a pig leg, where my lower leg would be hidden by my frock coat. I've seen a couple videos and some very, very basic write ups that state/show the end results, but I've yet to find anything that shows, or explains, in detail, HOW to make one.

Has anyone here ever made and/or worn one? If so, how, and was it comfortable enough to be in it for an extended period of time?

Does anyone here know where I can find detailed plans, or better, a video on how to make one?

My thought is that I'd need some form of leg rest, which I could put a whole lot of cushion on to make it comfortable. I know, after seeing video examples, that the support has to go, either up the front, or along either side of my upper leg. One even showed that the guy added a waist strap to the top, so his waist helped with support.

Here are the two video examples I've found.
Video 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5MjcFTfphM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5MjcFTfphM)

Video 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XbehvoJtJ8&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XbehvoJtJ8&feature=related)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/help.

See link for costume peg legs. A bit expensive but you can see how they are made...

Thank you for this. I did see their site before. I definitely won't be buying one from them, as they are waaay out of my price range. However, now that I've taken a closer look, I see that they do provide a picture of how they secure it. I'll have to see if I can work with this.

Thank you for responding.

I've made one.  A actual one for a fellow that had really lost one of his legs and wanted to dress up as a pirate.  He found out that I am a professional woodturner (among other woodworking trades) from the person that introduced him to renfaire and related events and asked if I could make one to fit him.  He gave me the dimensions of how it would fit him, length, etc and where I needed to put the strap anchor points so he could hold it on.  Seemed like it worked just fine as I've heard from others that they've seen him wearing it at pirate fests they go to.

What he did for the straps, since not being a plastic that would slip over his leg and hold well, he had a strap going up to his waist from the front/inner-ish thigh and another coming up from the side of his leg to a belt.  The wooden peg leg was concave and padded a lot.  I used a good physical therapy closed-cell foam product and I'm sure he added more on top of that.

I'm not sure how you'd make your own peg leg.  I guess you could just take about any suitable looking length of (lightweight but not so much it'll break!) wood and shape the top where it fits onto your knee and pad the heck out of it.  Then strap it to your waist.      ???

Thank you for the suggestion. I finally got the results back and I, fortunately, don't have broken leg. It still hurts a bit, but I managed, with the help of an ankle brace, to walk around a ren. faire all day Saturday. The nice thing is, it didn't hurt the next day, which is what I was afraid of.

So, long story short, I don't think I'll need a peg leg after all. I have thought about making one as an accessory though, so these suggestions are always helpful.

Thanks again for responding.
