Post by: ophelia murdoch on June 30, 2011, 03:56:28 PM
my friend's character is a scribe. she's wanting to know what her parents professions needed to be for her to have this profession. i'm trying to do some research, but at a loss thus far. what are some professions of the era for the Yeoman class? thanks!

Beekeeper
Miller
Wool Trader
Weaver
Chandler
Cooper
Spice Dealer

Any of these could have become wealthy enough to have one child educated as a scribe. But for a woman, that would have also most likely required the patronage of their liege lord's wife, i.e. the local baroness would have sponsored her education so that she could have the services of a female scribe for correspondence that she did not wish to go through her husband's secretary.
