Hello all,
Been working on fancy work for some other projects and the book I bought had a few knots in it that would work for buttons. Would these work -

If so what material would be appropriate? I doubt 550 cord is really PC ;D
Jim
I think they would. I have seen knots like that on garb before. Though not sure if it is HA or not. But it is pretty.
As for material... maybe the small cord or ribbon? Not really sure there.
Your knots look great though ;D
I did something similar to this on a doublet for my son. I used drapery cord for his (a cotton blend), but imagine 550 cord would do just fine. It would hold up nicely, and wouldn't be recognized as 550 cord more than 10 ft away.
I attached mine with a small bit of Elmer's glue, then sewed right over and along the cord. It worked beautifully!
Good luck!
What are the names of those two knots? I like the look.
Frogs, as they are called when you have a button knot and loop together, are perfectly period.

Thanks.
The loop is called a padlock knot. The button is called (not being smart) a button knot. The book I use is decorative Fusion Knots by JD. His website is http://fusionknots.com/index.php
I got it when I wanted to do some combat bracelets and a search gave some real cool variations of the Solomon Bar as well as so other very different designs.
Worked with a couple other combinations to see if they would work. This one is the button on the end of the pipa and a pipa for the loop. The latched setup -

Playing with some of the other knots I liked. Just wished I could figure out where I could use them.
Triple strand cloud knot. It's about 3 inches across -

Single strand Tree of Life. It's really abstract but you can see it if you look for it -

Single strand Ring of Coins. It is part of the Double Coin series which the above Cloud knot is one -

Triple strand Ring of Coins. It is about 5" across and was a major pain to do. Still have some tweaking to do on the tension -

I'm very impressed! The only knot I know how to do is a noose. I hope you incorporate some of those into your garb and show us!
Thanks Drac! I've googled some instructions for both of those knots. My wife is making me a new shoulder bag/man purse, and a couple of those knot closures would be a great way to secure it closed.
I've been into knots for many, many years. My personna is that of a mariner; consequently, many of my accoutrements are covered in knotwork. My knife's handle is half hitches beginning and ending with 3 strand turks heads. My cup is covered in square knotwork; and my cup's tether has two over two square knotwork on one loop, half hitches on the other, and 4 strand square plaiting on the line between them.
Frogs on garments are fantastic! The toughest thing is to get them all the same size. As you said, "tweaking the tension"!
Check out Ashleys Book of Knots! Fantastic reference!
Good luck!
Those knots really are fantastic. Wow! Here's more period examples in portraits:

Hey! Welcome to the knotty side!! <giggle>
I use TONS of knotwork in my garbing. Drapery cord works great, and comes in lots of colors. If you're using it for an actual functional closure (as opposed to just decoration) I highly recommend either running a jewelry wire through the middle of the cord, or starching the heck out of the finished knots (just to extend the life of them).
Here's some examples of pieces I've used those same knots in (assuming the link correctly):

I was JUST about to post something about how I wanted a black ostrich feather fan, and that I found some for cheap, but the area that meets the handle is plastic and no fun. Would you be able or interested in making something like that? PM me, I'd be happy to find out!
I can do even better, if you just need to cover the handle of the fan, get some thick cord in the color you want and I'll supply the link to a quick easy how-to on that knot. That green on my fan is HUGE curtain cording (like 3/4 to one inch diameter), but half inch would work if you were doing two knots, one on either side of a piece of plastic.
The knot is called a "Trinity Knot" and you can see how to tie it here:

It doesn't have sound, but it goes slow, and you can pause and go back as needed :)
*bows* I'll go get some! I'll let you know if I accidentally tie myself to myself.
