Does anyone have one of these flexible wire bun-cover thingamajigs? I'm not sure what to call them, but they're nearly identical to a toy often sold at science museum gift shops. Does anyone have one? They sell them at our fair, and I'm wondering how they are to use/wear. How do you do your hair with it? I am looking to upgrade from my current snood, and was thinking of something very similar to how the costumer linked above has done her hair. The booth at the fair is always packed (usually with mundanes trying to get into the Fair spirit), but I'm wondering if anyone who's bought one has ever actually worn it again!

A friend who came with us for the first time to a Ren faire bought one (back when they were mundanes and not garbing it up with us...)
The thing is, what is funny about your last statement is this: Last time we went I asked her where hers was, and she said "you know, I don't think I'd wear it again."
we made a point the last day of the faire to make sure she wore it, because it cost a bit of moola.
But it depends, I think it's cute, but its kind of a 'wear it once and then never again' for a lot of people, my friend included.
But I suppose if you use it as part of a noble garb type thing, it may be fun to wear! As always, if the price is right.
But what a timely thread, I just asked her if she was going to wear it and she said "um...no."
My mom got one one year and she hasn't worn it since. I tried it and it just doesn't feel secure in my hair. I much prefer my hairsticks!

I doubt people would use it for that. Really. I wasn't a teen that long ago and I really don't think that is even on anyone's minds. Administrators wouldn't even hesitate to allow a student to wear them. My mother is an admin at a school and I jokingly referred to that comment and she said "that's the last thing we are worried about. We would never tell them not to wear that. We'd have to eliminate chop sticks in hair, clips in hair, etc. anything with a pointy edge. And that isn't going to happen."
Maybe I read it wrong and you are being sarcastic! But I didn't want anyone to not buy one because of the 'hazard.'

Dittoing this. Using the pointy things as a hazard logic, then pencils are a lethal weapon and we all know how evil pens are, I'm sure. Shoelaces are great for choking people.
Of the things most security folks worry about, pointy things are way down on that list (outside of knives/swords). Bombs are really what are scary and you can make one easily with what you can find in the Janitor's closet plus what is available in lunch room if you know what you are doing. ;)
And now to get back to the topic....
I have a plastic "bun cage" which no longer fits my hair. It is black, and likely not the same thing at all, but to wear my hair with it, I put a ponytail in the back, twisted my hair, and wrapped it around the elastic. Then I would jam the bun cage on, and work the spike through the cage, being sure to catch the hair on the skull side of the elastic as well.
Because I have a lot of hair, the spike (which is also plastic), tends to bend, but if I have done it correctly, the bun usually stays in as long as I need it to.
I do not wear this to faire, but, when it fit (before my hair got as long as it is now), I would wear it fairly frequently - it was less fiddly than bobby pins.
To answer your question Gem,
My sister has one of these and wears hers every year to faire. She puts the top half of her hair in a ponytail and puts the thing-a-mabob around the ponytail base. Then she has one of the leather and bead hair things and puts that around the rest of her hair to hold it. She has long hair. THe thing a ma bob looks like a small crown, its really cute. But it can be worn a number of ways and hers came with instructions on how to wear it. AND yes it is also just fun to play with.

I actually ended up ordering a small beaded caul from etsy, but this information was really helpful. I still might take a look at them at Fair next weekend.
i've never bought one but i know walmart had something simular to them the other christmas for like $1.00 i bought one but never put it on the tree but play with it.
