Did a little search but didn't see any great results pop up so I apologize if this is a repeat thread and I missed the original...
Trying to talk a friend into wearing a kilt and he sounds pretty willing to give it a whirl, but I don't want him spending a huge chunk of $$ on a garment I'm not confident he'll love. Are there any good suggestions for nice looking (either traditional or utility style) kilts at a reasonable cost for a beginner?

Have a thrift and econo kilts at very good prices. They are acrilic though.
The economy kilts are reasonably priced, and they have a variety of tartans to choose from.

If you can get to some Celtic Games near to where you are, Celtic Croft typically has a tent up if you wish to shop in person. I'm pretty sure they will be at the Quad City Games in Davenport Ia. the 3rd week of September.
If you are really bargain hunting....CC has a rental business and a LOT of lightly used, but slightly damaged rental kilts/jackets/sporrans/belts, etc. for sale at huge discounts.
If you've ever wanted to dress in contemporary Scottish formal wear, but hated the idea of the 500+ price tags, you can't get a better deal. These items are typically put out on a rummage sale type table to be picked through, and the do not advertise.
Hubby makes a point of heading to that table every time.
Get about 6 to 8 yards of plaid fabric. Pleat all but a yard and a half to his waist plus a half measurement and baste stitch it. Wrap it around him and throw the yard and a half over his shoulder. Cover the basting stitches with a belt. This is pretty much all the great kilt (17th c -there is little evidence of the kilt prior to then) is/was. If you aren't sure, don't waste money -just buy some plaid fabric from Walmart or Joanns for $2 a yard.

Sport kilt is great kilt easy to care for, machine washable. Now the bigger you are the more expensive they get.
Stillwater kilts great kilts machine washable. Thrifty kilt is $30 has velcro to hold it shut. This was my first one i just throw a belt on and i have no problem with it staying in place. There econo kilt is around $55 and comes with three leather straps to hold it shut and belt hoops.

I have heard great things about Utili kilts and once again an everyday kilt and i believe a little more pricey then the kommando.
Oh and yes go to celtic fest or highland games to get some good prices. I just picked up a denim kilt for $60 for another everyday kilt.
Since we're talking about modern kilts now, I know the guy who owns this company and my dad has two of his. They're really nice quality and look great!

note that you do not have to go with a plaid. You can use any natural solid color. Theiving/warring Scots blended into their environment, they wore earth tones.

Celtic Croft doesn't have a store front per say... But we've taken things to them, their house, for repair or exchange.
They have always gone WAY out of their way for us! Excellent customer service.

Hiyas back! I did see that Stillwater was local, but hadn't noticed that Celtic Croft was. Thanks for pointing that out! I've passed all the vendor info out to the fella and now it's up to him to decide whether or not to purchase. (Although if he knows what's good for him...)
Is he a single fella? Wenches love men in kilts. Of course if he is married, that shouldn't be a factor in helping to convince him ...
