Title: Redoing a kilt
Post by: Sheri on September 18, 2011, 08:53:04 AM
A while back I found an adorable kilt skirt for a girl at my local thrift shop.   Then my 8yo decided he wanted to wear a kilt for one of our Faire trips, so I pleated the back more to make it fit his waist.  Over all it looked great, however I decided since he really likes the kilt and his sister can do without yet another skirt, that I wanted to take it apart and make the pleats look nicer.

However, I'm running into at least 2 questions.   1, which side does the front opening go?   As a skirt it's on the left side, yet I'm seeing references to it should be on the right side for a kilt.  I can change it, but if it's acceptable on the left I'd like to leave it as it's one less thing I have to worry about.

2.  How long can we get away with?  As it stands now it's just below his knees.  The story is it's his older brothers kilt that got handed down to him   I'm also thinking if it's a bit long it'll serve him for many years, and if I leave some leeway in the waist it'll fit him that way for years as well.

Here's some pics of what it looked like before.  And ignore the shirt, it's something I sewed up real quick, a nicer one is also in the works.

As you can see, the back isn't laying down after adding pleats between the pleats that were already there, hence why I want to go and redo it.  Especially if we can get a few years out of it.

It is a little long, but I suspect that is as period a wearing pattern back then as it is today.  (Clothes a size too big, then 2 months of perfect fit, then a size too small.)

If it is easier to leave the kilt closing to the left, and it is not the end of the world to you, then I wouldn't worry about it on one that is already made.  Document it for when you make him the next one in a couple years.  I can't imagine anyone garb snarking a kid.

I think he looks GREAT!  I love to see kids in garb!!!  Future rennies.
