This is my first embroidery attempt. It is of the charge I would like to have on my new surcoat. Question being, Is it proper to have embroidry on a surcoat? Now that i have started it I don't know if it would look out of place. My kit is appox. mid 14th century.

I don't know if it's proper or not, just wanted to say WOW, for a first embroidery attempt that looks amazing!
WOW indeed!
I think this is the first time I have seen a Rooster head on a Grifin Body. Interestink!
I think its supposed to be a cockatrice , maybe. But heraldic emblems were common on surcoats. Embroidery or applique were the most common forms of decorating.
So yes, it would be appropriate.
And may I say WOW on the work also.
Wow indeed! Will you be using couching to fill the larger areas?
Very nice!!!
Thanks for the all the kind comments ladies,
@DonaCatalina and Lady Kathleen, yes it is a cockatrice. My real name is Cox, a later form of cocke. The cocke being my name sake, I wanted something a little more fiercer than a "rooster" and something uncommon, unlike the standard wolf, dragon or eagle. Also a good conversation starter.
@Rowen MacD, First i had to look up the term couching, lol. No, at this point my plan is to leave the larger areas void of fill. Just the black lining. I had the thought that all that thread would be a eyesore. I want to finish the outlining, attach a backing and apply it to my surcoat.
Coch!
I stand corrected. Very impressive embroidery work just the same. Huzzah!
My one concern is that it's "modern" looking in design. It looks a lot like the royal air force symbol and not like it's 14th century ancestor.

The actual embroidery is lovely but if you are concerned with it looking out of place, the modern versus historical styles might be a concern.
There are varied depictions of the mythical beast.
Some were more rooster looking than others.

Coch, modern? no, it looks very differnet and unique. From the pictures DonaCatalina posted
it also looks very historical. And your version looks tough, even a little mean. LOL
I say do it. ;D
I Finished my charge. It took awhile because I was working on it very little at a time. But I am pleased with the results.

It looks excellent Coch. It was good to see you and ye lady at this past Saturday's workshop at the Castle. Pax Vobiscum 8) 8)
That is absolutely fantastic. I think it looks great and I love the red placement on the half and half, black/white background. That is so striking! I admire your design and your stitch work looks terrific. Congratulations on finishing such a great project. Well done!
That is awsome
Archer, love the current avatar (saw the series long time back).
Going to a faire set in that period? :D
Excellent work! Mayhap some day in the future I will acquire the patience required for embroidery.

No, its about the now. ;D Twas a good series.
Coch, ready to take on some more of this type of project or was one adequate experience ? ;D Really does look good and looking forward to seeing you in action with it on opening weekend. ;)
Thanks everyone for the comments.
@ Archer, It was a pleasure to meet you too. I really enjoyed doing the charge. I changed off between this and doing chainmaile and one other small project. But as far as the embroidery experience, I really enjoyed it. As far as me in action, it might be comical. I have never done a character and I can be socially challenged. LOL.
We bought our Pirates feast and Masque ball tickets today. I have a couple of questions for you concerning this. Do most people bring their own feast ware?

We'll figure out something on the characters to do as a team, if you wish. I'm often asked, where is my horse ? I usually tell them I lost it in a joust to the Blue Knight. ;D We could discuss ideas by PM when ready.
Actually, at the feaste, most eat with their fingers and do not bring utensils but, it sounds like a good idea as I've found the green beans and soup bowl a bit difficult by hand, with wenches at the table. ;D Last year, the danes across the table were probably thinking . . .
veni, vidi, volo in domum redire. Maybe it was the green bean juice in the beard ? Anyway, they had a show and a half as we had Cpt. Spleen at the table and that presents a fun show, standing alone. :D
non scholae sed vitae discimus
The embroidery on the Surcoat turned out fantastic!!!
Well done!!!
It looks wonderful!
Congratulations on the finished product.
