Title: Favorite Ren-era films / documentaries?
Post by: CecilyWilkins on December 03, 2011, 05:09:04 PM
I'm guessing that a good many of us are history lovers. What Renaissance-era films or documentaries are among your favorites? I'm always in search of new recommendations.  :)

One of my favorite was a 5 part documentary series that originally aired in the mid 90's on PBS called The Renaissance.  It was produced by New Dimension Media and each part covered such interesting topics such as The Artist, The Prince, The Warrior, The Scientist, and The Dissenter.  It was host by Ian Richardson and also included dramatic readings by various actors, nice re-enactment scenes and great music.  The following is a link which contains a trailer.

"Terry Jones' Medieval Lives" is a real eye-opener.  It blows away common myths of the lifestyles in the pre-Renaissance era.  It focuses in on all levels of society and many different professions.  You can find it on YouTube.  For instance:

Yes! I love everything I've seen with Terry Jones. Those documentaries in particular were excellent.

I finally saw the movie "Luther" a couple of months ago and thought it was very interesting and well done.

Chainshot, I will have to look for the PBS series you described. It sounds like a good one.

I am a fan of "The Plague" and "The Dark Ages" specials from the History Channel.

Films:
The Three Musketeers (1974)  (I didn't like "The Four")
The Return of the Musketeers (1989)

Docs:
Anything to do with the art (not so much the lifestyle)

Since I am more into films, tho the documentaries are certainly cool

Here goes

Braveheart
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Kingdom of Heaven
Pirates of the Carribean (It is after the Renaissance, but since there are Pirate acts at probably every Ren Faire, I'm throwing it in)
Deadliest Warrior Pirate Vs. Knight
