Title: Fabriologist~ No Longer Fabriholics!
Post by: Cilean on December 29, 2011, 09:56:46 PM

I thought we could make a new thread!  On that says we are proud to find glorious fabrics.

I can't wait to show you all my 12th Night Gown which will be white damask and black damask from my awesome stash! See what happens when you find a good deal and you put it aside!

I did find the perfect trim and I will show you all soon, but all I had to put out for this gown? Is the trim. I had collected all of the fabrics for the past few -10-years!

Anyway! I wanted US to have a great place! To show off our lovely fabrics!!!

What a good idea.  I shall have to dig out some of mine.

I was digging in my stash of satins and I found a beautiful green Japanese silk that my uncle brought home when he was stationed over there. I really want to make an over dress for my mom since he isnt with us anymore but the thought of cutting into to that gives me the shakes!

When I get the nerve to do it I will post a picture
Title: Fabriologist~ Scored $3.00 Per Yard Silk!
Post by: Cilean on July 14, 2012, 12:04:46 AM

I guess I have good Karma!  I was at a JoAnn's and in the clearance space was a roll of silk, and it had a tag that was $6.00!!! So I got all of it I think it is 15 yards, which is awesome because I was planning on making some 14th Century Gothic Fitted Gown or Cotehardie for my niece's 14th Birthday Party. I am in the making of a Gates of Hell and GFG, and we need one for the two Nieces. So I was trying to save cash but still make smashing apparel!

So the whole shabang was $48.66, for 14.6 yards!! Awesome, I have in the STASH, Blue Velveteen, Dark Blue Damask, and some Blue/Black Ecclastical fabric. I think I can keep the matchy Matchy by making Gabby's gold on the over gown and Mina's in the undergown..........

Wish me luck!

A few years ago (maybe 2010?), I decided to see just what was on the $1.95 Clearance on fabric dot com.   Turns out, that day, they had emerald green dupioni silk there among the vinyls and polys!  Even though I was pretty poor (I think this was after one of the first times my old truck had go in for repairs) at the time, I still snagged 30 yards.  I've made tons of stuff out of it over the past couple years.  Two 18th C gowns (one for me, one for Mom), a Regency gown, a late 1890's blouse, ect.  I have enough left over now for probably one more gown.  I'm thinking 1520's Venetian but that might change.

God bless Craigslist lol! I got this 16 yard bolt for $20:

It *is* shiny, so I do believe it's synthetic and won't take dye, so I plan on making "costume-y" outfits or using it for undersleeves, foreparts, etc. I think it would make a *beautiful* Elizabeth Swann dress, so I *definitely* will be doing that. And if I ever get an itch to make Maria's curtain dress from The Sound of Music, this would be perfect as well lol! Other than the aforementioned pieces, any ideas on uses?

Oh, GLORIOUS!!!! You're right--totally perfect Elizabeth Swan gown. And holy cow, it's an even better deal than I thought--$1.25/yard!! You would have kicked yourself to miss that (or I would have kicked you, either way).

I think you should cut a swatch and see just what it will do, dye-wise! Although really, it's a perfectly splendid color as is.

LOL! Yes, it would've been psychologically unpleasant at best, as I would have spent days berating myself for passing it up! God knows I have enough to play with, so I will do just that. Yellow is actually one of my *least* favorite colors--pastel most of all (think baby nursery--ack!)--but I just couldn't say no. And I know pastels aren't h/a either. But we shall see. I'm glad you didn't have to kick me.  :P

Psaw. It would make a marvelous giornea.

(http://member.melbpc.org.au/~kertons/images/lodovica.jpg) (http://www.florentine-persona.com/Art/ghirlandaio_birth_john_pinkdress.jpg)

I think colors are only "pastels" when in a group. Really, I have no idea, but I don't see anything wrong with that yellow. I have a beautiful butter yellow damask in my stash that was supposed to be a giornea to go with this (http://elizabethcbunce.wordpress.com/historical-costuming/the-botticelli-dress/), but it's been six seasons now, so it probably won't ever happen. Sigh.

We could start a yellow thread for you, if you want!  ;D

You do the most marvelous work! (As do *many* people on these boards--some of you are so far beyond my skill set) It may be nice to find some historical sightings of pastel yellow in gowns. I'm *really* leaning toward using it for the forepart and sleeves of a tudor gown (I'm drawn much more to Tudor styles than Renaissance, truth be told). I know Anea and Isabella are the history experts, so maybe they could chime in *hint hint!* Too bad I can't "tag" them in a post--can I??

And I *best* see that giornea in the future with your beautiful gamurra ;) (can I get a pronunciation on giornea? My nursing school mind wants to pronounce it in a very *inappropriate* way  :o )

Hey WickedVox

Just because it has poly? Does not mean it will not dye, in fact it do a small swatch with your dyes and see what comes out! I have been dying strange fabrics, and the natural parts will dye one color and sometimes the synthetic will go silver! Or White, I will see if I can get some pictures for you but don't think you can't dye this fabric!

Cilean--I *believe* this is a 65/35 poly/cotton--I saw a bolt very similar but in different colors at Joann's in the "cheaper* home dec rolls. I'm going to play with it next week. I'd be thrilled if I could get a deep yellow/gold, but when in doubt black goes with everything :) Gem is right though, it's a decent color as is, I'll find uses for it. In fact I'm going to do a mock-up of an underbust corset and see how it comes out.

Just stumbled across this on etsy, and it looks like a great buy for somebody! It's over five yards of striped silk home dec fabric for only $25 (http://www.etsy.com/listing/102342352/525-yards-corded-silk-in-olive-browns?ref=sr_gallery_31&ga_search_query=renaissance+doublet&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=ZZ&ga_min=0&ga_max=0&ga_page=4&ga_search_type=all)!

I am not tempted, but thought somebody here might think it was just the thing.  :D

Squeee!!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Okay so I went to a not to local Joann's it is a big one I was going to a computer class, but I digress, and while waiting for the Teacher, I (Of course) browsed the Discount section.  Now there was a lady who was touching some gold strange fabric, & then I did a double take.  I can spot Silk anywhere I can promise you!  So casually so not to make this other lady grab the silk, I picked up some fake stuff and then was looking at some linen, and she walked away from the silk.  So of course I grabbed it!  It had a label that said $6.00 per yard, which is a complete steal...however? This was the Extra 50% off week and so it came to $3.00 per yard.  It was like 15 yards of the silk and it is a thicker silk not the stuff they sell at $15.99 which is so lightweight it is hard to sew....  I am making some Cotehardies or Gothic Fitted Gowns for my BFF and her daughters, and I was worried I would not have enough fabric to make it really shine for their 12th Night and also the middle child's birthday pressie, which is going to Medieval Times in Buena Park, in November.  So now? I have enough and because none of them are over 5' 2"? I can use it sideways because it is 54" wide!!!

Okay the Fleur de Lys fabric is for my 12th Night Gown possibly, I know it will be for some 12th Night, but I have 3 gowns in progress (pearling takes time!) but that is from Hancock Fabrics, and they were having a 50% off sale at my birthday, so it was $9.00 per yard plus an extra 20% off, instead of $19.99 per yard regularly. I have a thing for Fleurs so I had to pick up that fabric.

This is the other fabrics I as well as the gold/black shot silk on the top, I hope to get pictures of these gowns soon, so you all can see them!

Okay so while I was out checking out what is out there? My old haunt 'Discount Fabrics' on Haight/Ashbury, Yep the hippy section of San Fran, closed and now is Food Market.  Which totally sucks royal balls, so I found out they opened another one in Berkeley and since BFF is an Alumni and wanted to check out Berkeley to pick up some t-shirts and the like? It was a hop skip and a jump to several fabric shops in the area, one being Stone Mountain and Daughter and the other the afore mentioned Discount Fabrics.  Not the discount it was at the Haight, but still they had a sale and I was able to pick up some really awesome shot silks. I picked up the blue/red for my youngest niece she is getting a gates of Hell from that piece and if I work it perhaps a Crispinette as well.

So the silver, is Silk Satin only 2.75 yards but enough to do my Hubby's jerkin in and it was $10.00 per yard from Stone Mountain and Daughter, in fact? one of the sales people there? Was envious of my find and kept petting it like it was her precious (it was MINE).  The purple/orange shot, was $10.50 per yard with a 20% off sale and the gray/pink was the same.  I don't know what I needed it, but I did so there.

Cilean, those silks are DELICIOUS. Want!! Must see photos of the finished cotes. :D

***
Huzzah!! Thanks to a birthday gift from my SIL and awesome coupons from JoAnn, I have just become the proud owner of some obscenely expensive fabric I have been coveting for more than two years!! It seems kind of silly--it's just a fairly basic black tapestry--but it's over $30/yard for a reason, because it is just gorgeous. And it looks amazing with everything.

It's a medium-weight cotton blend, and it is destined to be a forepart and sleeves for a portrait gown project (which is what that trim is for)... and possibly a standalone bodice. (Did I mention there were coupons?  ;D) It was in the discontinued bin (!!), so I bought everything they had.

With & without flash:

(http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL417/1033223/24167320/403582425.jpg)  (http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL417/1033223/24167320/403582431.jpg)

And further testament to its amazing prowess, here it is with the otherwise un-photographable green damask tablecloths! For whatever reason, they look grey in every other photograph I've taken:

The embroidery floss is for my embroidered smock project (and, strangely, the precise shade of green of the tablecloths). I think it's destiny.  ;D

***
Here's another shot of that embroidered cotton that's going to be a chemise of some kind (I'm thinking high-necked, with the black tapestry bodice...):

Good evening,

I found this material at Joann's in special order home decor and was thinking about making a bodice out of it.  It is a rayon/poly blend woven fabric.  Would this be appropriate?  Thanks.

Waves to Cori!

Is this (http://www.joann.com/home-decor-solid-fabric-robert-allen-edwardian-china-blue/zprd_02319770a/) it?

Other than the fact that it's $54/yard (OMG! :o), I think it's beautiful. It's reminiscent of fabrics like the beautiful cut velvet in Bronzino's portrait of Eleanora di Toledo:

The rayon content probably makes it very soft, and although it's technically synthetic, it shares many properties of natural cellulose fibers, like linen.

But, thank goodness you'll only need about a yard!
Title: Re: Fabriologist~ No Longer Fabriholics!
Post by: Cori on August 06, 2012, 07:13:24 PM
That's it.  The fabric is really more blue/black with a grey background whereas the picture online looks more blue/tan/green.  I figured I could wear it with either a blue or a black skirt.

Since there was an issue this weekend at my local Joann's they will honor this past weekend's sales so I'll be able to get it at 60% off.  As much as I would fall in love with a fabric, I would never pay that price.  Not when there are so many coupons.   ;)

You just made me feel so much better about my selection choice.  I had spent a lot of time this weekend (as well as today) searching through the gallery of finished projects, through ebay and any smugmug pictures for modern usage of front-laced bodices.    Now that I know I'm on the right track I'll spend the next month attempting to make the muslin/bodice and most likely a new skirt.  I'm at Joann's a lot at their sewing circles/quilting bee trend sessions.    :)

So I have a friend with a relative who just went into an assisted living. The woman was a seamstress and had a half a basement full of all kinds of sewing stuff! Check out what I got:

assorted trims and an entire tin of bias tapes, flat lace trim, etc, but mostly bias tape *happy dance!*
(http://i1096.photobucket.com/albums/g321/TheWickedvox/DSCN0144.jpg)

all kinds of dressmaker's rulers! I know what the french curve is for, but maybe someone can shed light on how to use the small silver hem ruler?

about a yard of green velvet, red costume satin, and about 4 yds of white cotton.

I think I'll use these for something Victorian. The lighter one is actually kind of shimmery and the stripes are a really pretty pink and green. It's really soft too.

Some plaids and checks.

Linen blends.

a couple twills, but I'm not sure what to call the darker blue--it has flowers woven into it.

These are the twills and wools (?) and the one that matches the couch is like a tan/green and is really soft, but I have no idea what it is. It's destined to become part of the Roma outfit though.

What I'm most excited about--pattern weights! lol!

The cream with cherry on top:

I also got a full bolt of white cotton, a full bolt of unbleached muslin, and a 36" self-healing cutting mat, but I forgot them at the house  ::) I was scatter-brained from sheer joy lol!
I'm almost loathe to tell you what I paid for all this because it's nowhere *near* enough...$45.00...sick, right?

The only down fall is most of it is 2yds or less, but I figure bodices, jackets, sleeves, etc.
All I can say is Joann can kiss my booty for at least a few months lol!

YAY!!!!!  What a haul!

1. That dark green velvet needs to become the sleeves in your Roma garb (you have plenty).

2. The blue looks like a cotton (?) damask, and I think it wants to play with your red & yellow MA bodice.

3. Could the "really soft couchlike fabric" be a brushed twill?

4. The silver hem gauge can be put *inside* the hem when you press it, so you don't have to do all that pinning & marking. You can kind of see how to use it in this ridiculously huge photo (https://sew4home.com/sites/sewmk.mervideo.com/files/1143-Image-123.jpg).

Took advantage of the Joann's sale to stock up for my next project.  This will be a fancy noble court doublet to match my girlfriend's dress.  Her dress has the same color scheme of blacks, taupes, and gold.

The solid black fabric has a nice viney, floral pattern woven into it.  Very soft to the touch.

The gold silk I purchased off of ebay.  It is a cotton/silk blend that looks just like silk, but is a bit thicker and easier to sew.  Very nice to work with, I made another mini-project using the same material.

Good stuff Ser Niall! I love the color scheme! If that black-on-black is like the blue I just acquired, it could be damask as Gem suggests. Can't wait to see the end result! Also, don't forget to post pics in the "finished projects" gallery when your green outfit is complete!

I will.  Making all those individual panes for the slops is taking up a lot of time, I thought it would be going quicker.  I'm trying to juggle my time between a bunch of different things, so I haven't been able to get to it much lately.  We aren't going to be able to get to the MI ren fest until towards the end of it's run, so I should have it done in time to wear.

Hear ye, hear ye!
There is more pinked microsuede at JoAnn!!! Huzzah! Fabriologists rejoice!

This picture is *terrible;* it doesn't do it justice at all, but you can get a good look at the laser-cut pattern.

(http://www.joann.com/images/11/81/5/xprd11815313_z.jpg) (http://www.joann.com/suede-fabric-tobacco-laser-cut-suede/zprd_11815313a/)

(Clicking on the photo should take you to the page at JoAnn.com.)

It seems very similar to my pinked microsuede from a couple of years ago--very soft hand, fairly lightweight, all sorts of ridiculous handling instructions you can probably safely disregard with a little judicious testing.  ;D  The pinked pattern on this is even more elaborate and more open than the stuff I have--would make a marvelous overlay for sleeves or trim or whatnot. The color is a rich, medium tobacco brown (prettier than it appears on my monitor), and I'd say the circles are about the size of a quarter? The cutwork design reminds me of the patterns in sleeves like these (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/operafantomet/renaissanceportraits/venezia2/veronese1561giustinabarbaro.jpg) and these:

Here's a shot of my similar fabric in action, being made into tape for guards, which will give a better idea of the hand, etc:

It's currently on sale for $10.50/yard... which IMO is a teensy bit steep... but there are also all sorts of great coupons this weekend. Oh, I was tempted! If I didn't already have almost five yards of the fawn color on hand, I might have gone for some.

Somebody, quick--go and snatch some up!!

Snagged 5 yards of sand colored wool for 3.50 cents a yard yesterday at joanns, red tag stuff is half off, and 2 yards of olive green linen.

I must've done something gooooood...the fabric gods have smiled upon me again! I hope when I'm elderly and can't sew anymore *my* stuff goes to someone who really needs it, because that's what's happened again. Some of this fabric still had the original bill of sales dated 1957!

Some really fun vintage cottons I plan to turn into blouses.

A really cool nautical twill--very heavy--might make a fun modern day corset, maybe even a pirate-y one!

This one is strange. I think it might be a home dec fabric--very loose weave, even the pinked edge frayed. It's got a stiff hand.

Great sheer polka-dot, very 50's. I'm probably going to make a vintage dress with this as an overlay.

A *really* pretty pink sheer with a really nice drape--maybe linen? I'm going to do some research because I think this would work for the Civil War dresses they call "sheers."

Another sheer, but not historical obviously, what can I make out of this? It's a very delicate pink.

5 YARDS of black wool--light weight, thin, soft hand--maybe merino? Definitely going aside for when I can follow Centuries Kirtle tutorial! And 2+ of red plaid wool, maybe a modern skirt.

Some beautiful cottons. The bottom one is almost like those waffle robes in fancy hotels (not that*I* would know ;) ). The middle one has a really stiff hand, but I thought would make a stunning partlet or upper half of a chemise (not quite enough for a full one). The top one is a *stunning* soft eyelet cotton, which I *do* believe will become a Victorian blouse (I'm really excited about that--now just to find the right pattern!)

Pretty great, huh? I'm open to suggestions for most of it. Or trade some of it with someone. My stash overfloweth!

I almost forgot...
My new toy...Baby Lock Imagine wave--on payment plan! (from the same estate) Essentially they said, "Pay us what you can when you can, no worries. Who else do we know who'll use it? Take it" Can you believe it?! $600 and all the thread to go with it, almost $80 worth! If anybody wants to come over and rub my head for luck, I'm sure it will rub off--there's so much of it apparently! While you're at it you can show me how to use it too--I'm terrified to touch it lol!

Wow--have fun with that serger!! I'm still easing my way into mine. (It's awesome; I just have trouble finding uses for it.)

Great finds today at JoAnn! After my Epic Hat Fail (sob), I decided I would go back for the pinked microsuede (you guys get how those two things are related, I know. ;D). I got 2 yards, plenty for a set of sleeves. Since it's "Coupon Commotion" week, and I had like six 50% off coupons, I also picked up more of this red trim (http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL417/1033223/24167320/403582431.jpg) (I now have 20 yards, which should be plenty for anything! Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!). And I found a pair of stripey socks for a fairy costume, for all of $4.00--they were charging $15 at Fair!

But my best find is this (click on photo for link):
(http://www.joann.com/images/11/66/1/xprd11661501_m.jpg) (http://www.joann.com/-styled-by-tori-spelling-tm-glam-necklace-bottom-half-3layer-large-link/zprd_11661501a/)

Big, heavy gold chains, about 36" for $6.50 (with coupon). I bought two, planning to turn them into a girdle belt, but now I think I need to go back and get another for a potential Cranach necklace (http://images2.bridgemanart.com/cgi-bin/bridgemanImage.cgi/400wm.GNM.7717920.7055475/293998.jpg)! I wasn't really planning on a Cranach gown, but you need to be prepared for these things.  ;D LOL

I can't wait to see those sleeves! *swoon* And I LOVE that red trim--especially with that blue fabric. Were those *chains* around her neck or really long braids?! That's too heavy metal for me  ;)

I serged an edge on my husbands frock coat and almost fainted, I was so scared! I also changed the thread, and I was *sure* I was going to break it--but hey, what do you know? I didn't! I'll be taking my week between classes to learn it and go a little crazy teehee. ;D

Maybe we need to make a "trimologists" thread...

Saw this at Joann's, haven't noticed it before.  Thought it was really cool, and I had a handful of 50% off coupons that were going to expire yesterday.  Copper, silver, and red weaved gimp, about an inch wide.  I'll use it for something.

Yep - good stuff that.  Many ways to 'fancy' it up too depending on how long you want to sit there and glue or sew stuff on it.

Ahhh, how I love a good trim.

I thought I would share.
I was in San Francisco this past weekend
and coerced my boyfriend into spending a morning to go to Discount Fabrics (we walked past Britex- I was afraid to even walk in there for fear of touching and ruining something I couldn't afford).
This is what I walked into.

Needless to say I was overwhelmed and short of breath.
Couldn't find anything under the $5/yd range so definitely not a "bargain" kind of place
but what they have is amazing.
Its definitely the kind of place you only go if you are looking for something specific- otherwise you are going to end up cowered in a corner whimpering at all the beautiful fabrics.

I ended up walking out of there with 4 small metallic blue baby goat hides (yes they carry leather also) which I got at 25% off which made them cheaper than tandy and cheaper than ebay. Sooooo soft, they are destined to be a few pair of gloves.
Oh and I also got a expanding sewing gauge- after the 20% discount I think I paid $14 for it- still cheaper than online.

I know! Eight?!! Let us know what you plan to do with that behemoth!

Somebody on Pattern Review posted about PureSilks.us (http://www.puresilks.us/index.php?route=product/category&path=15), as a source for reasonably-priced hard-to-find specialty fabrics (not just silk).

Silk brocade--can see this as a Florentine overgown or a medieval surcoat.

Wouldn't this linen make a lovely partlet?

From what I'm seeing so far, I wouldn't say they're *bargain* fabrics (that linen is $12.50/yard), but I have spotted things that aren't so expensive they give you heart palpitations! Looks like a great resource if you're in the market for something really unusual you just can't source locally.

I have always been a Pfaff and Viking girl, but after struggling with threading my machines for over 8 years? I am a Baby Lock convert for the serger, of course they created it and they have the only 1 push button ease of threading, plus? The changes down to 3 thread is such a breeze! I mean it just makes sense, as to the 8 threads and gazillion needles, I purchased this for my hands, the Imagine has an air  push, and I am getting older with my arm not as strong anymore, I was worried that I would have issues in threading so I purchased the Evolution because it can do the threads without my need to add any oomph.  Plus it can do the wave and I can't wait for my next class to learn some of the stuff.  I signed up for Serger Club as well because I believe you must play and work with a machine to really get the feel for it!

It has worked so far perfectly for me, I can't wait to learn the T-shirt stitch with the 5 threads ~~

Gem! Those are lovely! I am now on a hiatus from purchasing fabric for the next few months, I need to work on all of the UFO's (unfinished objects) I have in my house from the past 3 years! But when I see something like that it makes my credit card finger twitch!  I am picking up some linen/cotton printed fabric that is from www.spoonflower.com (http://www.spoonflower.com)  for Eleanor's Famous Gown with her son, and because it is linen, I can make for Camping Tourney Season and I think I will do the same for the Black Elizabeth gown as well.  I do like to look spiffy while cooking over and open fire and sweating...err I mean glowing like a pig (Did you know pigs don't perspire? I wonder how that statement got started?)  I am knee deep in the Pink Mini Challenge over at http://realmofvenus.renaissanceitaly.net/challenges/IRCMC-Sep-Oct2012.htm (http://realmofvenus.renaissanceitaly.net/challenges/IRCMC-Sep-Oct2012.htm)  PPP~ Perfect Period Pink .

I know! I am absolutely with you on that one. I *seriously* need to institute a "one in/one out" policy for costuming projects: finish one before buying supplies for another (I tend to buy per project more than just stocking up on stash, but I am guilty of that, as well.), and not just because my closet is filling up, but because I have projects I WANT to make that I just need to get in gear and *do.*

That Perfectly Period Pink challenge sounds wonderful! Pink is seriously not my color, so I'm glad I wasn't tempted to stock up on stash for *that!* LOL
