Title: Pirate Coat Pattern
Post by: Lady Serenity on February 15, 2012, 02:23:55 PM
I know this has probably been asked many times before, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a good pattern for a pirate coat? I have made the Simplicity one for my husband and it turned out nice, now I'm looking to make another one but different style. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I tend to find a pattern that is close to what I want and then change it or add pieces from other patterns.  Might consider that!

I am tinkering with messing about with the Simplicity Captain Hook coat.  I think with some tweaking and adding it could be pretty cool.   But I hope some of the HA ladies chime in with good info on the Reconstruction History and other coats like that.   I would also be interested.

Take a look at the JP Ryan coat patterns.  They work out really well.

Or you could draft something, as we did for this one...  Based on JPR, but much modified.

Honestly, I love the simplicity pattern.  I've used it to make my Mom and Dad's pirate outfits.

The link above is to actual period patterns.  You can modify the simplicity pattern to recreate these same styles.

While I have the SIMPLICITY Captain Jack Sparrow pattern, I prefer the JP Ryan 1750's Coat pattern. I have this pattern in a number of sizes.

I have, but really do not llike, the Simplicity Jack Sparrow pattern, so here's another person saying, "Don't use that one." It's a horrid, drapey, unfitted unflattering mess.

The waistcoat and shirt in that set at rather good, however.

JP Ryan has the most versatile patterns;
but for a variation you can try NFM 1755 Pattern for Justicorps (Military Coat) and Capot (Canadian Hooded Coat)

Pirate coats from the JP Ryan pattern...No two coats are alike.

Which JP Ryan do you prefer? I show he has two his Frock coat or the Miliatry one.  My MIL gave me some money for my birthday and I'm SERIOUSLY tempted to invest in one.

Edit:  Drat they do pay pal and I do not care to do buisness with pay pal.

Lady Stitch, here is the link to the pattern I just love. This one is so versatile for military and pirate. I think of Last of The Mohicans when I see this coat style. http://www.jpryan.com/details/1750.html (http://www.jpryan.com/details/1750.html)

When I order from JP Ryan, I pay via my Business Credit Card. Never had a problem at all.

I used the Buttricks Pirate coat pattern but I opted the make some changes...I cut the back at the waist and added about 10 inches which I pleated to add some swing to the coat( mans pattern...I am a girl). A word of warning if you use it it runs small in the shoulders or at least it did on me.... Not horribly so but it binds a touch.  But it is lovely and hangs nice...would even without my changes.

Thanks everyone for your input! It looks like we are going for the JP Morgan pattern. Jon likes the style of the red coat Lady Kathleen of Olmsted has made with the collar. Now to pick out the fabric and all the trimming! This is going to be a adventure for me since I'm just a beginner at sewing. I'll post pictures as soon as I figure out how to. I was going to post the one I already made but couldn't figure out how to.

Thanks again!
Rhonda

Speaking of Pirates, here's a tip for those in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas...http://www.smm.org/pirates (http://www.smm.org/pirates)

The Science Museum of Minnesota has a new Exhibit called REAL PIRATES! What a hoot it would be for a large group of us Pirates were to show up in out Pirate Finery! How much fun would that be??

I went to this show a few years ago in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is a very educational and really great show. Just to see some of the sets they have and to learn about some of the crew and such. If you get a chance I recommend going at least once.
