Title: History, Customs and Manners 2012 version
Post by: SirRichardBear on March 06, 2012, 11:56:08 PM
While the schedule hasn't been updated I think (hope) its safe to say that they will be carrying on with the lectures this year.  So since it around a month till openning figured this was a good time to start throwing out topics to give the cast ideas what people are interrested in.

One new idea for a topic I'd like to see is the myths and legends that were popular in 1533 I know King Authur and Robin Hood were popular but what were some of the others?

A good one would be everyday food and beverages.
How did foods vary between the classes?

It's not ren, but how about a talk on the difference between Pirates an Privateers.  They Pirates seem to be growing in number recently.

Also maybe something about Court manners, dress, Knightly Virtues.  The code of Chivalry. Music and Dance of the times

Sorry if these have been discussed before, I've only been to Scabby once.

I'm not sure if anyone from this year's HCM team is on the boards, but I will poke them and see and, if not, forward the suggestions to them. :)

They have done pirates vs privateers before and its always a popular lecture worth repeating as are cour manners and dress.  I don't think we've done music and dance before that should be fun since dancing and music are a big part of Scarby.

You just want to see me lose my head!

PS: I watched last year at the HCM, but didn't practice, and forgot ...left leg is forward, or right? Expose the inside of the leg...not skin, but just so that the inside of the leg is facing...supposed to show respect, as I recall... Or am I dreaming all this?  BTW, not talking about the curtsy...I'm talking about the bow.

Right leg for God left for crown, ladies keep back stright so as not to show clevage.  Men foot turned slightly toward the outside to show off a strong calf. most reverence should be high not low. If I remember the lecture correct.

It sounds like your memory is working quite well Merlin.
Ladies should curtsy so as not to expose the back of their bodies to the view of others.

I'd say that, at least at Scarby, the Wench Line in parade has become the exception to the curtsy... we all tend to bow to His Majesty. Not that we are trying to distract him or anything....  ;D

...the strong calf! Yes... now I recall that statement at HCM. I believe it was suggested that it was easier to drop the right foot back, than to step the left forward.   What do you mean by "most reverence should be high not low," Sir Richard?

Well, Merlin, we line up EVERY DAY between the Taylor Lane arch and Eagle's crossing bridge, pretty much across the path that goes off the parade route and farther into Pecan Grove.  Our Rogues line up across from us in front of the pottery shoppe that's right there... Aside from actually being IN parade and marching on the side where we would be on your left, that's the optimum Wench viewing location...

Low reverence is where you go all the way down with the knees deeply bent and bowing low over the forward leg.  a high reverence is only a slight bend of the knee bowing only a few degrees at the waist.   high is for normal greetings while the low is what do either to show off at dance to asking the king not to cut off your head for some mistake you've made.

What you mean your NOT trying to distract the Scots?  Now that is disappointing after all highlanders are much more important than a per Engish King.    mmmmm did I say that out loud?  that could get me in a mite of trouble again

Curtsy is usually a bit of a cheat - the legs cannot be seen, so most ladies will step back on whichever foot is most comfortable.  If taking a knee or reverence, as stated, it's Right Knee to God.

Ladies should not Tip the Shelf (as do the wenches) and gents should remember if they doff their hat, the lining of the hat should be turned innermost to themself, not outward to another person.

Greetings, my friends! Well, we are just a few short days away from Opening Cannon, and I will be your friendly neighborhood HC&M liaison for this year. If you don't know me, my name is Matt and I play the role of Thomas Cromwell.

All of the show performers would very much like to thank you all for your interest and active participation in the History Customs and Manners Show. We are very excited to have the opportunity to see you all again this year and are now actively soliciting subjects about which you would like to hear more. They can be anything - repeats from previous shows, things we may have touched lightly on, or completely new topics. Feel free to throw ideas out in this forum, and I'll collect them and pass them on.

Appearing regularly in the HC&M Show this year will be:
His Grace, Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk
Secretary of State and Chancellor of the Exchequer Thomas Cromwell
Latimer Fairfield, Captain of the Sea Hawk & Baron of Suscerland
Margaret Lee, Lady Lee
Owen Fairfield, Boatswain's Mate of the Sea Hawk
Penelope Weaver, Master Weaver

Our first show's topic will be "Welcome to the Sixteenth Century - a compendium of notes and miscellany of life in our times"
Second show shall be "Sixteenth Century Belief systems"

After that, we shall be alternating between topics we feel like nattering about, and ones you wish us to natter on about :)

Look forward to seeing you all very soon on the magical grounds of Scarborough.

Cheers,

Matt

Having read through all of the posts, I have gleaned the following as possible topics for the show:

1.   The role of children during this time. Their education, death rate, 'day in the life' of different social class' children, etc.
2.   Myths and legends that were popular in 1533 - King Arthur and Robin Hood were popular but what were some of the others?
3.   Everyday food and beverages. How did foods vary between the classes?
4.   The difference between Pirates and Privateers, and a general discussion of both
5.   Court manners (giving reverance), court dress, court life
6.   Knightly virtues and the Chivalric Code.
7.   Music and Dance of the times.

Feel free to add to the list, and I'll keep a compilation of suggestions. Thanks for your input so far - we appreciate it!

Cheers,

Matt

Think this is a great idea and would enjoy seeing them.

Amy suggests a contemporary politics session.  Most playtrons may know Margret is Henry's sister but how many of the partrons?

There are a lot of people in the Court that leave most people scratching their heads or looking to the Tudor's show for answers.

Drac: Splendid suggestion, thanks. I'll add it to the list.

EloquentXI - Absolutely the tradition will continue :) Some of our best topics came from this forum, and we want to make sure that we provide our audience shows that are interesting to them.

Merlin: Nod your head and say "Yes, Your Majesty". That has worked to keep MY head on my shoulders...so far :)

And a final side note: Feel free to tell your fellow HCM Show regulars about this forum, so they can add their voices as well.

We'll be a bit busy on Saturday and will sadly have to miss it...

We too.  We will be judging your customs and manners, Merlin  :D

But I can Make Sunday!  That's why I asked.  I'll try to remember it this time around.  We missed it last year.

Well, Don Juan, I did get there Sunday...and they even talked about me! They might not have if I had been dressed in my wizardry, but as VIII mentioned as he strolled by us, I was dressed down for the day, more like a ship's hand...incognito, as it were...

So I'm left wondering...were they talking about me behind my back, in front of me?

I've come late to this thread, but I think it might be interesting to learn something about Court intrigue... how various types and classes of people would try and manipulate and maneuver their way up the social ladder, or influence those in powerful positions in order to better their own standing, or advance their own plans or causes... and how these machinations differed between the sexes.

It was easy for us to advance socially, we just bought new threads.  ;D

That was just what they were worried about when the passed the Sumptuary Laws the worried that the rising middle class would buy the same clothing as the nobles and get above themselves.  so that passed laws forbidden the wearing of certain clothing if you were not a certain class.

Hello again, folks! Thanks for your continued input and participation in the shows - it was great seeing many of you there our first weekend.

Sorry about the last-minute posting, but we just got the schedule for most of the year worked out. Here it is (subject to change without notice, not valid in all states, supplies are limited - call NOW!):

Show 3:  Food and beverages.
Show 4: By request: Courtly manners, reverence, social and gender deference, and basics of dress. If we have the time - Intrigue and factionalism!

Show 5: Other places: Scotland, France, and the low countries
Show 6: Myths and Legends that are popular (what is seen as myth, and what is seen as history)

Show 7: Artificers, artisans and making things by hand.  Touch on leather work, cloth manufacture, metal work, woodwork, etc.
Show 8: Music and dance.

Show 9: Other places: Spain, the Germanies and Scandinavian countries, and the Italian states
Show 10: Children

Show 11: Love, sex and marriage
Show 12: The Arthurian ideal, knightly virtues, and the code of chivalry

Show 13: Scarborough, the port
Show 14: Pirates and privateers: A hard life at sea

Show 15: TBD
Show 16: TBD
Show 17: TBD

By the way, we have received some questions about how we rehearse and prepare. The short answer is - we don't!

The performers in the HC&M show are all instructors with the Scarborough Academy of Performing Arts and are accustomed to lecturing with minimum notes, in a free-form manner. Most of us love the period to the degree that we devour and digest material throughout the year, and then teach it during workshops. We then adapt the material and the delivery into a show format, and perform it live, with no rehearsal or prep beyond a reminder during the week as to what the subjects will be the upcoming weekend. So, when we stumble or overtalk each other - you now know why!

Enjoy!

OOOH, I don't know who suggested 'Scarborough, the port" but that should be very interesting.

Just wanted to say a very heartfelt "Thank You" to all of you who showed up at, promoted or otherwise participated in the HCM Show (2012 edition). All of us on the Scarborough HCM staff deeply appreciated it. The audience this year was consistently the largest we've ever had, and we've had some wonderful feedback. So, again, our thanks. Stay safe and we'll see you next year.

i would like to offer up a heartfelt thanks to the SAPA crew for providing such great historical information, perspective and entertainment!

303 days to go till 2013 opening gate!!! (pending confirmation of opening day, of course! :))

This year offered Nimue and me the most opportunities for HCM we've ever had. Yet, we weren't able to take advantage of all of them! Well, for two of them, we were in the wedding garden...with Lady Kett...

But, seriously, Kett is right (always is), and we enjoyed the ones we were there for. You folks do an amazing job, and I never even liked history, until Scarborough. You make it fun and interesting, so I stand with Lady Kett and all others to give you thanks for your presentations.

Thanks for the giggle this evening!

Did make it to one of the first ones and loved it.  Unfortuneately life only allowed one trip to the Scarby this year (what a waste on seasons passes) so bummed out we didn't get a chance to see the others.

I've seen the link for the Facebook page on Row 12 and Friends of Scarborough on the 'book of faces'. Seems like quite a few people like the show.
