Title: German Jack Boots
Post by: Dinobabe on April 02, 2012, 04:39:04 PM
Does anyone know where I can get a good pair of German Jack boots (or similar) for not brake the bank cost?  I can't find Civil War boots in my size (I think a men's 5.5; size has been my bain) so I need something else that will get by.  Thanks!

This is what I'm looking at atm.

And here are some in a men's 8    http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/used-german-military-parade-boots-black.aspx?a=792479

Don't see anything smaller than a 7

Try the local thrift stores?  Boots of all different styles have been popular for the last couple of years, so you might get lucky and find something there that will work.  And if you do, you won't be able to beat the price!

Butch, that's my problem.  Small feet!  Thanks for the links, though.

Elennare, I have purchased 3 pair of various boots from thrift stores over the years but they are often "dress" shoes that don't last long and HURT my feet. ::)  Men's shoes are always huge sizes and women's boots have a high heel (not the fashion statement I was looking for ;D ).

I'll keep looking.  Thanks!

Maybe do a search for black wellington boots?  Add "leather"/"women"/"used" to narrow the search?

Wow, awesome finds!  I'll be using those key words in future searches.  I'm afraid the women's 8 will be a bit small (I'm 8.5).  I tried a men's 6.5 on at the reenactment this last weekend and it was way big, that's why I assumed I would be closer to a 5.5.  Conversion SHOULD be my size minus 2 for men's.  Before I buy I'm going to Wally World to try on men's shoes to figure out the best size! ;D

I have found that the conversion depends on the shoe.  When I had to get 2 inch heels for one of actors who was doing a drag thing of Ethel Mermin, I got him 12 women's but actually size 10's fit him better.
Then I have one of my actors who has trouble finding good shoes because he wears men's 5's.  He can either spend a fortune from the small foot men's shop online, or get kids shoes.  I've found some amazing shoes for him that were kids outdoor boots or stout ladies 7.5 boots.

While in the military I had the opposite problem-boots were in mens sizes back then, and I wore a size 5.  I wear 7 in womens.  The loively thing about leather is that it stretches to fit your feet, so I limited my search to that.  There seems to be plenty of used boots out there in the size 10-11 range in ladies.  My hubby wears a size 11 in womens-he buys the soft black suede boots at walmart for noble garb.

If only it were ren boots I was looking for!  Being for Civil War reenactments I have to follow much stricter guidelines. :P
I have found some contenders, though.  Wish me luck.

OK, so I found a pair of boots at Salvation Army for $13.  They are too big but after 2 insoles, an arch support, double socks, and heel padding (phew!) I wore them this past weekend at a Civil War reenactment and they worked great!!!  They have rubber soles which is a bit of a bummer for authenticity but makes them more comfortable.  Yay! ;D
