Title: Finally!!!!
Post by: LadyFireKissed on April 25, 2012, 09:04:25 PM
I am so excited, I am finally going to be able to head over to Larkspur!!  I have wanted to go ever since I have been going to our little ones over here in Grand Junction.  After the Faire this weekend was a success, I have been bitten by the bug and hard, Now that I have a car that can make it over there, I have no excuse!  So just a question, as a newbie over there, what things should I know?  as far as things or acts to make sure to see, helpfull tips (wear sunscreen, drink water... things like that?)?  Anyway, I really hope to see some of the people I have seen on here in person!  Thanks guys!!

Among the most important things:

1) COMFORTABLE footwear - The shire is filled with 'ups & downs' and it takes its toll on the feet!

2) Layered garments - the weather changes from sunny to stormy, and takes an occasional trip to hail and cold so oddly in its coming that even a crystal ball can not foretell its arrival!

3) As for what to see - EVERYTHING!

Lastly, a well kept secret of our shire - opening weekend, stop at a local Wendy's and gather royal notes that allow the purchase of two tickets for the price of one. Not to fear if you do not find them there as a number of them turn up for the asking around the entrance to the kingdom...

Enjoy!

From our visit last July, I would say that the Big Cat Show is an absolute must-see, as is Celtic Legacy.  If you have never seen Arsene, you should check out his show.  As hard as we tried, we didn't see everything. It was rather warm when we went, and it took a toll on us.

The three suggestions of Celtic Rune Stones are dead on from our experience, but the third item is nearly impossible!

Definitely stay hydrated and wear sunscreen.  We had a great time and hope you do as well.

The Baroness and I look very much forward to welcoming you to Larkspurshire, LadyFireKissed!

We also echo Celtic Rune Stone's sage advice.  To it, we would add the following:
-  Drink more water and use more sunscreen than you think you need.
-  Don't be shy!    Playtrons and cast members alike welcome being approached by fellow enthusiasts.  (The Baroness and I will be sorely disappointed if you do not introduce yourself!)
-  Definitely take time to see Puke and Snot, Johnnie Fox, the Big Cat Show and the last joust of the day.
-  Have fun!!!!

Thank you so much everyone, I am going to have to take a list and make a game plan for catching shows. :D  I now have a friend going with me also.  I will keep my eyes open for everyone, I hope I dont miss anyone! I think I may have to get a RF pin soon anyway, seeing as I dont have one.  You guys will see me with the green bodice, brown skirt and black hat with a chainmail band.

I would add in The Washing Well Wenches. I will say they are by far the MOST entertaining of the comedy acts. Agreed Big Cat show is a MUST and bring a camera if a point and shoot.

Sunscreen, more sunscreen and even more sunscreen, people fry easily

Drink Tons of liquid (Iced Tea, Lemonade and water) then drink 3X more Do not over do the alcohol as you will feel it especially when it is hot

Comfy shoes as Runestone Said. this fair IS uphill ever all the way until you get to the lowest  point, then it is up hill and that is no joke.

You can keep cold liquids in the car and drink it

Drink Pickle juice if you like pickles... trust me a little does help

Take breaks in shady spots

Did we mention this faire is uphill all the way? Well it is

Be prepared for 40 degree temps, expect 100+ degree temps

Rain, Hail, lightning and yes even Snow do Happen as well as tornado's not overly far away but no tornado's on faire site yet... Unless some silly wizard decides to play around with his spells `Looks at Merlin`

Get there no latter than 9am otherwise you will be parking in the back forty and may have to face more traffic that you might like

And most of all Have Fun and play, we love people that play

Well thanks, didn't think about leaving liquids in the car.  I wouldn't think that you could bring even a mug of water back in...  I didn't know or think about pickle juice.  I'll keep it in mind.  And dont worry, I will come prepared to play...

Someone may correct me on this if I'm wrong, but last I was aware, you can bring in water bottles as long as they are still factory-sealed. So you could potentially bring in all your own water if you didn't mind carrying it. It would be well worth it as water on site is $2.25 a pop and there are no water fountains. The water also does not come with ice.

Wow, thanks Zoe, that would definitly be worth it, I could keep a cooler in my car, and I could make trips back out if I need to I guess, that way I could offer to others if I needed...

When Toki and I go out there we fill out mugs with ice and water and they say not a thing... but then again the gate people and staff know us. BUT I cannot say that everyone could do this

Sounds like you're pretty well informed ... but the single most important piece of advice is to HAVE FUN.  ;D

I'll also reiterate the importance of being hydrated and keeping sun block on, but I can say that our emergency services crew is awesome.

We've had trouble bringing in more than one bottle (sealed) per person at one time.  Unless you get there pretty early, the hike to the carrriage can be decent.  They do offer a free shuttle to the west lots, though, and that would ease the trip considerably.

I'll keep these things in mind.  Just a question, what is the pickle juice for and why does it work? ???

Pickle juice is basically a brine, i.e., salt solution.  It "works" for exactly the same reason that gatorade and other electrolyte replacement solutions do, i.e., it replaces the water and sodium that is lost in sweat.

Try the turkey legs at least once, if you are not a vegetarian.  If you are more akin to the plants, there is a tastey artichoke dish, maccaroni on a stick.. number of other generally good foods.

Music. I don't know if Celtic Legacy is returning but they typically turn faire into a great party with a few lively tunes.

The joust opening and closing weekends tend to be the best, they put on a great show.

The legendary puke n snot is worth a few good laughs(the first time around or two) , 'specially during election years.

If you can, stay from cannon to cannon. (10 - 6:30) It really completes the experience.
Title: Re: Finally!!!!
Post by: LadyFireKissed on April 29, 2012, 09:33:15 AM
I consider myself a meataterrian, and even though I am trying to loose a few, I think for the weekends any semblance of a diet must go out the window.   ;D  Also, what is the point of me driving over if I dont stay for the entire weekend?  Gotta stay for opening and closing cannons.

Speaking of music I really have no Renn music collection, is there some selection to choose from?

Unfortunatly I wont be there opening and closing weekends, I'll be there for Celtic weekend and music and dance weekend.

One other question, I will be  getting a hotel room, any suggestions for decent ones?
Title: Re: Finally!!!!
Post by: Bahlien on April 29, 2012, 09:51:36 AM
Well you would be in luck going those weekends as more musicians tend to be abound during them. Most of the street musicians and Celtic Legacy typically have their own cd's and the like, this is good if you like the sound the Hammer Dalcimer makes.  Can't say for sure who is going to be here this year though.

Castle Rock is the closest and there are a few hotels there that are pretty decent, from what I have heard. Though, I've not been to any, as I like to camp on the longer visits to faire!

Oh and in meatatarian case, Steak on a Stake is another good famous food at faire.

Castle Rock has some nice places that were decently priced when we were up there. Comfort Suites is where we stayed...on Castleton Court, if memory serves. There were a couple other hotels next door, and a great restaurant/brewery within walking distance that has some great brews.

The motel within thirty minutes of so of the festival that gets the best reviews on travel websites like Trip Adviser is the Best Western in Castle Rock.  It is less than 20 minutes from the front gate, and gets even better reviews than the Hampton Inn right next door.  It is reasonably priced, but tends to fill quickly during festival season.  Several friends of ours have stayed there and have been well pleased.  There are several eateries within walking distance, including McDonalds, Chili's, and Black Eyed Pea, and there is a grocery store less than half a mile away.

One of my favorite dishes is to take a Steak on a Stake and place it between a folded slice of cheesy bread. (Luckily these stands are within spitting distance from one another) Instant steak sandwich. YUM. (Of course take the stake out first...I imagine that would not be so yummy.)

I too have to figure which weekends I will be able to visit this year. Being a patron for the first time (in a very long time) is going to be an odd experience...

The cat show is going to be even more amazing this year.  I spoke to the Catman this past weekend, and while I'm not at liberty to share *what* cats he will be bringing (You all want to be surprised, right?), I can say he'll have a wider selection from last year, and some truly amazing cats for the show.  The wider selection of cats will also mean that each showing will likely be slightly different, as we feature different cats.  Bring your friends, bring your picture boxes, bring your little wiggly food items to feed to the kitties and keep our feeding costs down.

I was kidding about the food.  We tell the audience that we will happily take misbehaving and wiggly little food items (i.e. children) as donation.  Honestly, the cats eat steak, and eat better than the humans who attend them.

As for their source, some are members of endangered species raised in captivity so that we'll have them around a little bit longer.  Others are rescues. (Come find me on a sunday and I'll tell you about the Vet who "adopted" a mountain lion).  Still others are part of breeding programs to keep genetic diversity in the population so when their environments recover, they can be reintroduced.

However, I'll say this now, and I'll say it every show every sunday of faire (I only work sundays due to other obligations).  You can not remove the natural instincts of wild cats.  the Catman has an amazing rapport with these creatures, and I swear he can speak their language.  But if your little wiggly food item goes running in front of the stage during the show, our handler is going to be hard pressed to restrain a 250 pound cat.  That is part of why I am there, to stop kids from doing such thing, and to interpose in the very rare case that a kid gets past us.  I'm also there to stop patrons from reaching over the ropes to try and "Pet the Kitty".  People have been desensitized to danger and for some reason, though we repeat it over and over again, dont see the cats as potentially dangerous predators.

Sorry, Sore Point.  I'll stop preaching.

Honestly, the cats are wonderful, and we love working with them.  We provide them food, health care, and shelter in the hopes that we can keep their line alive long enough to get their numbers back up and bring their species back to the wild.  IN return, they provide us a connection to the wild, and a chance to educate people about the amazing diversity of creatures that have, and we hope will continue to inhabit our planet.  We dont do it for the money, and we certainly dont do it because we are smart (I've taken a swat or two and been really lucky), but we do it because we love our cats and want people to understand them, appreciate them, and hopefully, learn to respect them.

And to an extent, I exaggerate the danger.  These creatures are by no stretch of the imagination "pets", and they never will be.  But they respect him and, generally, (as much as any cat listens to humans) listen to him when he gives them suggestions. And if all else fails and something stupid happens from the audience, Catman has excellent control of the cats movement via leash, and we have several stupid, er, I mean brave individuals like myself willing to throw themselves in front of the cat. <grin>

I know, I know. I believe I've said for years now that I wouldn't be returning--but this year I really mean it. For better or worse. We just live too far away now (we have mountain lions and bobcats in our yard, can I bring one to show and tell at the cat show??) and I am working full time in the service industry in a tourist town, which makes asking for weekends off in the summer very tough. That with the upcoming wedding and buying a house this summer just makes things far too hectic for me to even think about trying to ask for the time off to commit to faire. Alas. But, I should be able to make it "down the valley" a handful of times to visit, and I'm very excited to do so!

Well that is a good thing to hear.  I was only asking(Not being 100% sure), because when I went up to Alaska to see my brother, I got to see two Bald Eagles, that could not be reintroduced.  One thing that they had WAS a cooler asking for donations of food.

So dont worry about preaching.   ;D  I do know and preach myself to people about what animals are and aren't...

We have the Rocky Mountain Raptor Society from Ft Collins there as well and each weekend they bring different birds of pray to show and collect donations for. Each bird has been injured so bad that they cannot be turned free. The donated money goes to the care and feeding and many of the birds they get to get to be released back to the wild.

Everyone of them is beautiful and majestic

So true! Both of my dogs are rescued animals. My Akita is too rough to put with a Greyhound, but we have greyhound racing a couple hours away, and they have a local group that takes the dogs when their racing careers are over.  The CoRF booth was getting lots of visitors when we were there...I hope there were a lot of adoptions.

I went to school for several years with nuns as teachers. Trust me when I say that there is no such thing as a "helpless nun."

I had a 3rd grade teacher that LOVED to smack your wrists with a wooden metal edged ruller. She really loved smacking mine. And this was a public school. One time she went to smack my hand and I pulled my hand away at the last second and she hit the table and broke the ruler. She grabbed my hand, held it and I got 2 smacks instead of the one.

yeah I remember her ALL to well. I hated her

The Baroness and I (aka the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk this year!) will be most sorely disappointed if you do not seek us out.

T'was a pleasure indeed to meet you Lady Firekissed!  You are as lovely in person as your name would'st suggest.  The Baroness and I very much appreciate your having taken the trouble to seek us out, and we look very much forward to an ongoing acquaintance.

See you on the morrow!

I eagerly await seeing you again tommorow!  It was lovely to see your smiling faces and to see you are as kind in person as you are on here!  I was also fortunate to run into Blushing and Fireflicker.

Thank you to everyone that I met this weekend, and thank you to all for being so very kind.  To ALREADY feel like I have a family here and be welcomed with open arms after one weekend is truly what makes Faire so special for me.  I also loved the shopping in Larkspurshire, and am so happy with my new garmet.  Thank you my graces for noticing!

Not even sure KC is in our future for this year. We are talking of going to Santa Fe, just because we loved Santa Fe when we stopped there on the way to ARF

We will be there Sunday, with nieces and son and wife in tow.  We finally got my son and his wife to go with us last weekend.  They're hooked.  Our nieces are visiting from Houston, so they get faire treatment, too.

I keep trying to say hi, Francisco Paula, but every time I see you're herding cats.  Or, I guess more correctly herding prey away from cats.

So I just had to report in, I had a wonderfull time! Among the most memorable was meeting new friends, seeing friends that I met last time, the fantastic water fight(SOMEBODY even ended up dumping water down my back.), and spending time after hours with friends.  Now I just have to start planning for next year!

It was quite the pleasure to make your acquaintance Lady.  And I have no idea who would have been so rude as to dump water on you.  For those of you who missed it, it was a rather spectacular comedy of errors involving 10 different people and one small patron child flinging mugs of water at each other.  The crowd loved it.
