Title: Theatre Festival TRF
Post by: Dracconia on October 10, 2012, 08:35:32 PM
We are taking some students to the UIL Theater Festival on the 7th of Nov. The director that has never been to TRF, and I have never been to anything at TRF outside of regular faire weekends. Does anyone have any insight on what to expect?

Thanks :)

Not familiar with that event, but it is during school days, so expect more history and nothing "adult" oriented. In other words the bawdier shows and blade shops will be closed and anything suggestive will be removed from the shops that are open.

Hi there!  The theatrical competition does not differ much from an official UIL event, except that it is out of doors.  This year I will be judging one act plays, either High School, Middle School, or both, and I have in prior years also judged monologues for both HS and Middle School, duet scenes, and group scenes at School Days.  I am so thrilled and inspired to be able to watch these young people perform, and there are moments of pure awe to boot.  The music competition is divided into choral and band, and there is also a studio art competition ranging from elementary through high school (I've judged this in the past as well and I love it).  The Festival is very scaled down from it's regular weekend set up; there are no bawdy acts, no items that are not minor appropriate available for sale in shops (i.e. weapons, swords, clothing), and the food selection and availability is scaled back as well.  There are historical street characters there to educate and inform students, and there are many wonderfully historical demonstrations.  It is most definitely rated G and an environment for children.  If you have any more questions, contact DJ Cooley in the TRF front office.  She is the School Days Coordinator and will be happy to answer any more questions you may have.  (800) 458-3435
