Title: How do you get rid of princess seams?
Post by: Adriana Rose on December 30, 2012, 11:58:04 AM
I am planning on trying to make a kirtle style dress and since I am a bit tight on money I am frankensteining a skirt that I have made already with McCalls  #4107. I'm looking at the pattern and it has those blasted curved seams at the bust. I really would like to not have that, is there a way to redraft it so they arent there?

I've never done it before, but I'm pretty sure Red Dawn has instructions.

Honestly, though, if you already have a Ren bodice that fits you well, I'd base your kirtle bodice from that. My brown gamurra (http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL417/1033223/17691164/275717822.jpg) was drafted from an existing bodice, and my purple kirtle (http://elizabethcbunce.wordpress.com/historical-costuming/purple-damask-kirtle/) started with the Simplicity 2621 (http://www.simplicity.com/p-1576-costumes.aspx) corset pattern. (I've made them both, and in my experience, S2621 fit a lot better out of the package than M4107 did, and is just a much nicer pattern overall. :))  If you don't have a bodice or pattern handy, you might try the custom corset generator (which also has kirtle-izing instructions.)

*headdesk* Duh! I have a bodice I love and it is super simple.

I have a really pretty indigo colored umm I think its a rayon it drapes like sueded silk and it is just super yummy. I went through my fabric and in progress box and found a skirt that I had all sewn up save for the waist band and I have always wanted a kirtle so here I go. One last project before I buckle down for garland season after I make a plushie Odin for a friend. :o
