Meats, cheeses, wine, mead, berries and bread.  All served up in a rustic manner.

No soda, no bottled water, no ice cream, no smoothies, no pizza, no etc.

Regards,

CB

Since I am usually pretty cinched in, I tend to look for a snack in the morning - Scotch eggs, yum! - and then tend to sip bottled water to stay hydrated.  At some point I will indulge in one frozen Bellini and a protein snack again in the afternoon.  On the other hand, I am a cancer survivor and the long term result of the treatment is that I have to be very careful in what I eat as I don't want to become sick while wearing several layers of clothing.

Ren food? I guess anything on a stick from the savory (chicken, steak, mac'ncheese, etc) to the sweets (cheesecake, mini cream puffs, mini eclairs, etc)

Anything that won't force a midday garb change. There's a reason more than one dress is in my car at all times. I'm a slob. It's terrible to admit, but true.

My personal favorites at MDRF are the steak on a stake, chicken and chips, mac and cheese on a stick, roasted cinnamon pecans, the orange julius, and lots and lots of water and diet pepsi. Also the ice cream! They have these HUGE cones for just $3 (which, compared to an ice cream booth in the mall? Is downright cheap).

I know it's not H/A, but it is so hard to find something healthy.  Low fat, low cholesterol, tasting good.  I guess you can say for 1 day at faire, give it up and just eat something fattening/fried, etc.  But we spend many days at many different faires, and it adds up.

When we can find healthy salads, fruit (not so much cheese due to the fat), and whole grains, grilled & not fried stuff, we are so happy.  Lots of time, we eat on the way to faire and then after on the way home, maybe having a snack while we are there, if we can find something halfway healthy.

I am not a fanatic due to body image, but with a kidney transplant, I don't want to jeopardize it because I haven't watched my eating habits.

I'm on the lookout for healthier items as well.  I was pleased to find green salad with an option for ham or grilled chicken on it at the tiny Lawton Ren Faire.
At my home faire (Scarborough) the pasta place is my favorite.  All made from scratch & you never know what's going to be on the menu that day.  My kids get very excited when they have the pasta roses & the pesto is wonderful.

To me, faire food is lots of stuff on a stick & ordinary food with interesting names (Rogue sandwich for example).

I vaguely noticed MIRF had some veggie choices this year and fruit. YAY! I do like the turkey legs, but there's no way on earth I could eat a whole one, so I only get them if I have a hungry companion.

The California Faires always had lots of great veggie options from falafel to all kinds of salads to baked potatoes with various toppings (also meat toppings, for those that wanted it), and all fresh toppings as opposed to dried chives, etc.  I haven't seen any for years, but when I first went back in the 70's, my favorite thing was the cantaloup halves with ice cream, fruit syrup and nuts.  I don't know why no one does that one anymore (or do they?).

I have to say when I am at the faire, all bets and diets are off!! Unfortunately my garb won't let me eat a whole lot, so I always try to have some one around to share. My favs are the blooming onions and Gyros...yum yum!!

Greasy drippy things are verboten with most of my garb. But scotch eggs and crab cakes are safe and usually pretty tasty.

One of my favourites is the chili in a bread bowl, but I'm actually very rarely hungry enough to eat one (the heat and lots of layers of garb, not to mention the fact that it's laced pretty tightly, tend to take away much of my appetite).  :)

I can't believe I haven't seen the king's nuts listed!!! ;D

I have family members that asked me to bring some home!

Personally, I love faires having fresh fruit.  My boy can't pass up the fruit carts!

I generally look for the booth with the shortest lines  ;D when waiting in line is not a consideration I generally look for the kind of culturally diverse food one does not generally find in this particular corner of Alabama, Scotch eggs, haggis and gyros being high on my list of favored grubery. Barring any of that the standard turkey leg or roasted corn on the cob.

Trillium is right about the King's Nuts. So tasty. I've had to learn to make a substitute for when I run out after faire. Good, but just not the same. Also, the pretzels out at Scarby are wonderful, especially when they are fresh out of the oven. I also love the fresh fruit that's available.

For me, anything in a bread bowl is good food.
I kinda burnt out on turkey legs and now I like discovering new foods.
I fell in love with the wraps at scarby this past season when I found out there was cold food on those hot days.

*I also really like it a lot when people randomly bring me rum-cakes at camp*

NO breakfast food at all!
NO greasy foods.

I love the fruit/cheese platters and the baked potatoes with toppings. Also the garlic mushrooms.

I am especially partial to spinach pies.
As long as I get them at the designated time.   ;)

I agree Lady Renee,
I am not a transplant survivor, but I am a diabetic and have to watch those wretched carbs.  I am lucky and can bring  my own food, most of the time to cover myself and the bratty girl.  But sometimes I can't or sometimes I am a bad diabetic and cheat.

Fruit plates, real salads (lots of veggies, less filler crap) and water should be top of the list.

What do I look for in food at faire?  My car in the parking lot.  Seriously.  Most faire food is very heavy, fried stuff, stuff on a stick, thick soups in bread bowls.  Food like this makes a body sluggish, not to mention it's not very healthy.

We pack a lovely mid day meal consisting of lots of finger foods, veggies & dip, cheeses, pepperoni, crackers, some sandwiches, fruits, etc.  Great refueling for the second half of the day.  It gives us a chance to drop off any purchases from the morning shopping.  Saves money too.

How about just more general diversity in the foods offered?

If you have theme weekends at your faire, why not a themed food area or even just 1 booth that could offer some more authentic options.  I don't mean have Pizza Hut cater for Italian Carnivale or Taco Bell for fiesta weekend!  (yes, MNRF has a fiesta weekend...  I don't get it).

Our faire is supposedly in England yet we have very few actual English foods, nevermind period offerings.

Why must faire food be greasy, in a bread bowl, or on a stick?    Just because everyone else has that, doesn't mean people won't eat something new.

So to sum up, in a hopefully clearer statement...

Fresh, healthy, different.  Yes, please.

I like most things on a stick, mushrooms and alligator are on the top of the list. Believe it or not, but turkey legs don't even make my list. For drink water, lemonade, and mead. Though mostly it's Loki.

Working in the Food and Beverage field, I'd have to say it's a matter of what's easiest to make for the numbers they're trying to feed and available "talent" they can hire.  Something that can be turned out quickly, easily and with the least amount of prep/training is what they're most likely after.  Unfortunately, this doesn't always mean it's something people want (i.e. the "steak" sandwich I tried at MiRF last year).  Fresh things like fruit and veggies take more handling and more quality control than something you can fry up on a stick.
Anyways...them's my 2 pence!

I know pasties( meat, or meat and veggie pies) were popular in the day, easy to carry to work, and all wrapped up in their own crust. could be eaten hot or cold..
Myself, I like them cooked more than the ones I tried at Twig.

I know that there is some thought to making some of the food relatively H/A, or at least what would be interpereted as period correct (or at least close).  Or something that can be named to sound like it blenged back then, ie steak on a stake.  And the bread bowls serve two purposes:  no styrofoam bowl to throw away so less garbage, and bread is a cheap, easy way to fill someone's tummy, so you walk away full and content, even if you got less of whatever was in the bowl then what would have filled you up.

For me, I love them turkey legs.  Last year Sterling roasted 'em up, and then, just before they handed it over, dipped it in what seemed to be a heated mixture of BBQ sauce and (likely) turkey fat.  Oh, it sounds gross now, but come to Sterling and taste it.  From heaven.  That and the "wenches" (their adjective) serving them up told everyone that walked by that they had the best legs in all the land, that one only had to have a nibble on their legs and they'd be hooked.  Then they ask if you wanted the leg bare, or saucy.   "Saucy, please!!"  and under my breath, "you wonderfully naughty girl."  Oh shoot.  Did I type that or just think it??

Back on topic.  I have also thoroughly enjoyed the white chicken chili in a bread bowl, I think it was at Ohio RenFest.  I tried to get the recipe, but no one would give it to me.  And I bet it's something I could just buy to keep me warm in the winter.  Yummy yummy white chicken chili.

And the frozen cheesecake, dipped in warm chocolate, at Maryland is great.  And their apple blossoms.

No wonder I come back from the trips to the Faire in need of a bigger belt.

As a participant at TRF I usually bring my own food to snack on backstage, but it's a toss up between Gingerbread at the coffee shop, a Gyro at the Greek agora, a Muffaletta in the French quarter, the Potato Salad in the German section, Cabbage Rolls or Peirogies in the Polish village, and Fish & Chips at the Sea Devil Tavern if I decide to eat on site. I try not to eat anything very heavy when working, especially at the start of the season when it's still so warm.

At the new Sherwood Forrest Faire it was a tie between the Fish & Chips, the Shepards Pie, and the Spinach Pie at the same little booth. For dinner to share with friends and family it was pizza fresh from the wood-fired oven. It's much cooler during that time of year, so I like a heartier meal.

I never cared much for faire food, except the CHEESE BALLS!!!!  I would walk 50 miles for those.  The gingerbread cookies were a nice treat.  It was always a lot of fried or just bad stuff like people have mentioned.  Luckily since I was at a booth we made our own lunch.  I always enjoyed fruit, cheese, bread, and a wine bottle with lemonade or similar in it.  Find a quite grassy spot and lay down a cloth.
I remember it was always hard to get grandpa to eat lunch.  He didn't want his breath to stink when reading palms! :D

I've been trying to expand my horizons and not get the same things each trip. Some things I've had were perhaps not spiced to my liking, but that's just my personal taste. My experience at different RenFests is quite limited, but I will say that the quality of the food at Scarborough is very good. It beats what they serve on campus here!  So I guess what I look for is quality. (Never mistake that for being healthful...it's faire food after all!)

Fruit, veggie, cheese, bread, beefstick trays (Great Lakes Medieval Faire)
Oyster shooters, steamed shrimp/clams, seafood gumbo, red beans and rice (MDRF)

I usually try to find things that aren't so far removed from it's original state and I don't really like sweets at Faire. If its particularly hot I carry packets of Gatorade to add to water to keep hydrated but a nice selection of good ales and hard cider is always a must as well!

Wow...I'm amazed that no one has mentioned Victor's pasta yet!  There's always at least one choice I want, and usually more than one.  Plus he has wonderful salads and garlic rolls.

The quiche at the Victor's French booth is a great way to start the morning with a bit of protein.

Love the chocolate-drizzled macaroons from the bakery.  Also, I love to get a brownie from them and head down to the Pepper Lady's booth to top it with a bit of jalapeno raspberry jam.

The wrap sandwiches are good, though they used to be better.  You used to get more in them, but the last couple of years they've gotten smaller in terms of meat and veggies inside the wraps. :(

When it is hot out, I like to pair a cold, crunchy pickle with an uber-salty, warm pretzel.  Great combo!

The biggest thing this year was to get the garlic cheese bread from the French booth and to put a piece of steak from the Steak on a Stake booth between the slices of cheese bread.  Totally nommy sandwich.  I'm thinking of seeing if I can get the stir fry guys to just do some peppers and onions for me to add to it next year. *grin*

Ok, I freely admit I get distracted easily and miss things... Where is Victor's? I know I must have I've seen it, but I also know that in all the years I've been going to Scarby, I've not eaten there... I'm not a huge Italian fan, but I am a big food fan (and getting bigger all the time  :P )

Enter the gates, go the right almost to the Iris & Rose stage. Most wondermous noms. Which change if not daily, at least each weekend. Some standard items, but there are some truly staggeringly tasty items only available as long as they last. It pays to visit in the morning to look at the menu for the day!

I love the fruit and cheese plate at Scarby, and with the bread that comes with it, it's enough to fill my daughter and I, and it's only $5.  At TRf it's the frozen sangria and sausage kolaches for breakfast (Scally gets the frozen lemonade with hers... ), and the chicken-on-stake back in Sherwood later on.  It's two grilled chicken breasts, no grease, and the seasoning is excellent. Of course, I'm always a sucker for frozen chocolate covered cheesecake, as well...  ;)

Victor's Pasta Palace is the Italian booth on the same row as the German and French booths along the High Road in Pecan Grove.  Come in the gates, turn right, cross the Peasant's Free Bridge and go past the Elephant Privies.  Keep going on that far right road past the Friends of Faire area, the Brothers' Stage, and East Wind games.  Victor's is on the right hand side, just before the pub where Iris and Rose perform.

Victor makes all of his pastas and sauces from scratch, and the menu changes daily for the most part.  Some things are the same (the garlic rolls for instance) but he usually has two or three kinds of pasta with various sauces every day.  He also has some totally nommy desserts, and from what I hear he has really good espressos (I don't drink coffee).  He owns the German booth as well, and their menu changes every day or so too.  If you want a top-quality, relatively healthful meal for a decent price, they are good places to go.

Well, I've been twice... once this year with my renlet for RenDezvous, and once last year for closing weekend.  It's not too bad a drive for us, and I love their gorgeous Faire!  I'm hoping to go next season once, but I would have to have a place down there to stay, since I really can't afford hotel prices.  We'll just have to see what happens, though.

The Pasta Palace is one of our favorites as well.  I really appreciate that he puts a descriptive menu up that tells exactly what's in everything.  DD has a food allergy & while pasta is normally not a problem, the ingredients in the dishes could be.  My kids beg us to head there every day after opening cannon so we can see if they have the roses.  The pasta roses are definitely a must get if they are available that day.

I also think there are few things better than a plate of fish & chips while watching Adam Crack or Doktor Kaboom.

If so, my boyfriend and I took a drive down from Kansas last season to go, and it was great :) Hmmm...I remember he did not like the rootbeer, but we had a pork chop sandwich and that was very good. Of course I must have a bag of kettle corn as a meal and while it was not as good as TRF's, I still really liked it. He also had a pickle and very much liked that, but I hate them :P

If you're not talking about that, then whoops ;D But while it's a small faire, it was still a great time and I recommend it!

MMMmmm! I could fall in love with a pork chop sandwich!  Do they make that in a low calorie version? I have to lose some of this weight I gained from quitting smoking... Oy!

Delireus, I believe the thread is just about Faire Food, wherever you find it...

Yeah, I know, I meant are you two specifically talking about visiting the Castle in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

I know the post as a whole is about food from all over at faire. I wish I would branch out and try more things. I usually try to get the cheapest thing I can find and save money for other stuff, but one time I had alligator at TRF, it was pretty good.

Ahhh... then yes, we were talking about the Castle!  I've been back here in OK since May, '01, and we still haven't been, but mostly because I don't know much about the camping in the area, or if there are other Rennies who camp close by, and I can't really afford hotel rates.  So we go to the Norman Medieval Festival here, and save up for our Scarby and TRF trips...  Hopefully we'll make it this coming season, though, and who knows... maybe Merlin and I can talk folks into an R/F invasion if we can get some good info on the available camping and accommodations!

I do like trying new things at Faire, though... and we usually try to make a point of looking for something that looks really yummy each time we go!  I also love threads like this, because it gives us so many wonderful possibilities to choose from!

First I look for something non-greasy and non-drippy. Court garb and drippy do get along well together..

Believe it or not, the fish and chips at Scarborough are not greasy, or at least they haven't been for me.

(so much for the sarcasm, I guess it doesn't come over in print. LOL )

The Castle had — I'm not even sure what they called them — fried potatoes like potato chips. I LOVE home-built potato chips.  I will get some more of those when I return to the Castle. Not messy at all (unless you want to drench them in ketchup, which I don't).

The Doña is right (I think she meant "court garb and drippy do not get along well together") about the food being messy. It's hard enough on garb, but when your persona has as much facial hair as I do, it can be problematic!  Finger food is good for me. I can be gross at home where I can hose off my face....

Peasant potatoes... curl-cut and deep fried.  Mmmmm...

And they can be found at many Faires, Merlin, because they are inexpensive to make, and they can make lots of money with them!

If I am at Sherwood, I go for the hummus, pitas and falaffel. There's also the roasted almonds, but that's not really unusual.

If I am at TRF, I go nuts with the noms. For me it's the empanadas, the fried mushrooms, the pretzels (the parmesean pretzel for me, thank you!), again the roasted almonds (I always bring a big bag back for my dad because he loves the heck out of them), the gyros and of course, the turkey legs.

My usual staples at TRF are a scotch egg in the morning, chili in a bread bowl for lunch, and a turkey leg for dinner before I leave for the day.  Yes, not the healthiest choices, but I only go a couple days a year, so its a treat.  If I find anything truly unusual or different, I'll almost always try that in place of some of the above.

And of course, plenty of beer throughout the day  ;D

BTW, I watched a Ren Fest special on Food Network a couple years ago, and they showed how they make the turkey legs.  They roasted them over a special rotisserie with a spice blend, and then steamed them in a cooler for a half hour so the meat stays moist and falls off the bone.  I tried this method at home using my grill (slow roasted using indirect heat), and they came out very faire-like.  I wonder if my neighbors will freak out if I'm out on the patio with my friends feasting on turkey while wearing our garb  :P

yes scotch eggs, I have made these.  It's not to difficult but expensive for only a dozen or so.  Bread bowls with Brocolli/cheese  soup or beef stew.  If there is a fullt functional bakery at the faire... the cinnamon nut rolls, to die for

Grandma's booth at Bristol was right next to the turkey leg vendor.  They had this H U G E stainless steal rotisserie out back and would hose it down every day.  It was fun to watch them go round and round and round.....  Always smelled great and we could have free legs if any were left over after the day. ;)

Oh lordy, now you have me thinking about Fest food!  My faves at MNRF are definitely the banger roll (with ranch, H/A be darned!), the spinach pie, and now those tasty cupcakes they've added.  Other than that. . .I can leave most of it. Though Italian Ices are good on a hot day.  I was a HUGE (read multiple trips a day) fan of Tillie's Magic Bean coffee shop, and specifically their "pixie punch" in lavender, but they're not in business anymore, and I just sigh longingly when I pass the spot they used to be.

Usually it's just too darn hot to do more than drink water (and beer) when I'm out there.  Which is most weekends.  Plus it gets spendy.

The barbecue competition food was good last year, though. . .I'll definitely visit that again. :)

That was actually shot at Scarborough and is specifically how Scarby does their turkey legs.  I'm told that we're the only ones in the country who do them that way. :)

I guess I'll have to make a trip to this faire and give them a try!

I found this press release, but not much more.

www.scarboroughrenfest.com/press/releases/05Turkeyleg.doc (http://www.scarboroughrenfest.com/press/releases/05Turkeyleg.doc)

Also found a site with some unwrapped videos. Not sure if it's on there, the search box is not all that good.

Yes, I do believe that's the show.  Although I thought they had more than just the turkey legs on.  Its been a while since I've seen it, so the memory is hazy.

I need to come up with a face-bra—maybe like the one on Ally McBeal (okay...I'm way behind on television shows)—that would make it possible, and not totally disgusting for people around me, to eat turkey legs and other messy foods.
