Title: Brush with Greatness... aka Celebrities at faire
Post by: Capt Gabriela Fullpepper on July 01, 2008, 03:56:01 PM
I was just curious to know if anyone has ever seen a movie star/famous musician/famous polititian/Athlete etc at faire.

I would imagine that they go and if they do go, do they go garbed? or mundane.

We used to have a radio station in Denver that did a Brush with Greatness where people would call in about stars they had bummed into or met.

So let's here your story if you have one. it might be fun to know that you just might bump into someone rich and famous and who know's get discovered.

Sat next to Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top once at TRF while watching Clandestine play (years ago when Jen Hamel was still with the group).  He wasn't in garb, but was really getting into the music.

I watched Hugh Hefner and his three blondes attend a CA faire on the tv show The Girls Next Door.  I also watched Mencia attend a faire on his show Mind of Mencia.  That's the closest brush I've had.  LOL

And also not quite. Because then I could say as can many we saw Levar Burtan from Reading Rainbow at one.

I saw onthe old forum that someone bumped into Cowboy Troy of Country Music. Myself. Never seen anyone close to famous at a faire

I remembered at work today that I've met another celebrity at a faire. While I was at Gregors Crossing in Chatham, Ontario, I met Ed The Sock, a Canadian late-night show host (who's also a puppet)

Umm, I'm not sure I want to regale you all with the tale of my brush with fame at Scarborough Faire.

We were shooting NBC National Weather Live with Willard Scott.

Afterwards, Willard Scott grabbed me by the face and kissed me on the mouth.

I, and others stood there in shocked amazement as he walked away, loudly saying, "I LOVE you guys!"

I've never actually seen him at one yet, but I've heard that Tom Smith has, on occasion, been at MIRF.  (Those who don't know who he is, look him up... http://www.myspace.com/filkertom ...his songs have most people rolling on the floor.)

So far, my only actual brushes with greatness consist of brushes with Ripe, Green, Dave the Knave, and Squire Paul (huzzah!).  :D  Ok, so they're performers at Faire, but they are great.

I have seen Elvis. (though, I sorta doubt it was really him)
and there are lots of people who look like other people, but, I cannot get the gumption to
go up and ask, 'scuse me, are you that actor guy that was the star of that movie 'Six Pack'?
Nope, I cannot do it.
I met David Rankin (radio personality) and some people who work for CNN and NPR.
Betcha we have lots of stars and such come to the faires. Just wouldn't know it from the looks of'em.

We haven't met any celebrities at any faire we've gone to, but we own a restaurant, where my husband is the chef.  At the end of the evening, he takes a walk around the dining room and chats with the diners that are there.  We have a lot of customers from the Chicago area, being in NW Illinois about 3 hours from Chicago, where the people come to spend the weekend.

Several times over the years at Bristol, strangers would come up to Steve and say to him, "Don't you own a restaurant in Galena?  We ate there --insert month and year --."

This even happened to us while visiting the Brookfield Zoo once and also on a trip to Florida.

Not a celebrity bu a reality TV player. A few years ago at Sterling, we saw Gunther ther guy who competed as one of the Gilligans on TBS reality series the Real Gilligans' Isle.

Now that I think about it. Since Dinner Impossible filmed at MDRF and as cast I was involved, I met the now infamous Chef Robert Irvine.

I remember when the original Renaissance Faire was still in Agoura (north of Los Angeles), lots of stars came out. I saw Patrick Swayze, John Davidson (btw-I actually have a picture of him in a monk's robe....he use to promote/sell the wooden Castle game there), and people I can't remember their names. Once up there the rumor flew around that Michael Jackson was there dressed as a clown...ya right...I don't think so.....(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y287/RumbaRue/MonaLisa.gif)

Why is Chef Robert Irvine "infamous"?

in 2004 I was in the former Blue Planet at the time still owned by Lost Island at TRF.  It was a shop managed by Mike (I think that was his name, it's been a while) but some time during one of the faire days, a tall black man came in with an enterage of about 6 to 8 people.  He shopped around a bit and really liked the stuff in the shop.

Mike asked one of the people, "who is that guy?  is he famous or something?"  "He was the tall black pirate near the beginning of the movie Pirates of the Caribbean, Curse of the Black Pearl."

Though I didn't recognize him as such, it was kind of funny that his co-horts followed him pretty much everywhere he went.  When he left, so did his buds.

Oh, and Rudy T from the Houston Rockets was there too... but that was further back than that.  He had a big enterage too.  ...1997ish?

Last season, I got stuck in 'Ren Jail' with Elvis.  Annoying sot, actually.  He refused to play along unless he was allowed to do his own Ren-themed version of Jailhouse Rock, thus forcing the rest of us to wait an extra hour or so while he thought it up.
On a different note, Bronson Pinchot was up here on the island last season filming a movie.  So, yea...I guess I got THAT goin' for me!  ;D  Although I did manage to catch him off gaurd when the first thing out of my mouth was "Hey! Weren't you Elliot in True Romance?"  Guess he's more used to 'Balki'

I can't say I've ever seen a celebrity at Faire.  'Course, we don't get too many celebrities in Ohio anyway.  xD

In fact, the only time I have met a celebrity was when I worked at King's Island.  Pretty minor, honestly.  Donovan Patton, who played Joe on Blue's Clues (really, really nice guy, in fact...hung out with him most of the day), Nick and Aaron Carter (a Backstreet Boy and his little brother...too bad I was 18 and waay over my boy band days by then), and...OH!  Ken Griffey Jr.  But, again, not Faire, so it doesn't really count.

I have never encountered a celebrity at Faire but I can tell you... I was at the grocery store and I had someone come up to me and say
"you're... you're that guy from the Renaissance Faire, aren't you?"

THAT is freaky
I can't even imagine what a celeb goes through with everyone knowing who they are.

Is it wrong that I'm kinda jealous? Hehehe. Haven't seen any celebrities at faire (that I know of), but when I used to live in Nashville I saw quite a few all the time, including Lorrie Morgan and Sammy Kershaw a lot...they always came into the store I worked at and recruited me to help them shop. Nice folks actually. In fact, almost all of the celebrities I've met were nice with only one exception...but he shall remain nameless. :)

I get that sometimes, too.  Every now and then someone approaches me and says "Aren't you Professor M?"  But I think it's kind of cool.  It's always been my goal for the character to be well-known, so I guess I'm well on my way.

I also get recognized as "Conductor Mike" from the Carnegie Science Center.  We have a large historical miniature railroad display, and I'm sort of an un-official ambassador for special events.  The character is popular enough that they now have a life-size cutout greeting visitors as they enter.  Sometimes someone approaches the cutout and says "Hey!  That's the Professor from the renfest!"

So, here's one of my brushes with the famous.  This is me as Conductor Mike, with Mr. McFeeley (from Mister Rogers neighborhood), and my cutout.  Freaky, huh?

I'm not on cast at my local Faire, so I'm always amazed anyone remembers me.

As for celebs, though, I used to do bodyguard detail for some of them at the casino and I learned how screwed up most of them are.  That being said, I think I'd avoid them in most cases... if I saw one at Faire I might say hello but I'd not fawn over them.

MNRF has several literary connections.

The Renfair scenes in the Sandman comic books by Neil Gaiman were inspired by MNRF.

Sci/fi writer Stephen Brust was a long time participant at MNRF

Fantasy writer Emma Bull (wife of Will Shetterly) was a member of the MNRF band Flash Girls.

Emma's partner in Flash Girls was Lorraine Garland who has worked as Neil Gaiman's personal assistant.

I think there's a couple more that I'm forgetting.

I wouldn't call him a prick, like many celebrities, he most likely was not carrying a lot of cash on him.  Though, for me knowing William Shatner through the paintball community, I can assure you that he is quite serious about his personal favorite charity "Ahead With Horses".  He commanded three times at three differant events where proceeds went to that specific charity at his request.
