Title: How to carry a warhammer...?
Post by: Maeve McMayhem on February 14, 2013, 08:58:06 AM
So, my boyfriend recently purchased a warhammer that he's been drooling over from GoT. Anyways, he wants to carry it at faire but he's looking for a way to carry it over his back as opposed to on his hip since it's so large.

Any ideas on where we might be able to find something to carry it? Or even what something like that would be called? Thus far - we've only found things for swords or hammers at the hip.

Thanks!!

First, check the rules at your local fair.   Most have some sort of "peace tied" rule which would mean you'd have to attach extra straps so it wouldn't be easy to get to the warhammer should your boyfriend get drunk and decide to take out half the village.   ;)  A few don't allow weapons at all.

Second, you are looking for a harness.  This one is for a sword (http://www.trueswords.com/deluxe-sword-back-strap-system-p-4949.html) but it should give you an idea of what to look for.

Oh, great! Thank you so much! Our faire allows weapons (peace-tied), that's not a problem at all. =)

Thanks again for the reply and point in the right direction!

I would call that a baldric, and there are several types shown here (http://ravenswoodleather.com/index.php?p=catalog&parent=4&pg=1). Perhaps something like this one (http://ravenswoodleather.com/index.php?p=product&id=123), which appears to be convertible from back to side and for any size weapon. If you can't find one to fit the size of the hammer, I'm sure any leathercrafter could come up with a custom piece for him. FWIW, Milord prefers his baldrics to also have a waist strap/belt, as it secures the weapon more effectively and better distributes the weight.

I am assuming since it needs to be carried over the back this thing is BIG. That would be called a "Maul" not a hammer if that is the case. Something like that is usually not comfortable wearing. Many faires do let items like that be carried in the hand or over the shoulder with the rule it is always under your control. Others want every weapon to be tied which makes some not worth taking. he just has to weigh the options.

Wow... that is something I personally would not even take to faire due to its size and weight. Ten pounds over all and a 14" head with it being 44" long is just a lot. I would think it would be uncomfortable to carry after a little while for sure. I would have him save the money trying to have a baldric made for it and use it for something else. But that's just my 2 cents.

My husband carried a Claymore exactly one time to faire. The size and weight wore him out.
5Lbs does not seem like much, (http://www.sword-buyers-guide.com/scottish-claymore.html) but after 6-7 hours it adds up if you are not used to the extra weight. I cannot imagine how bad 14 lbs would be.

I agree Dona. Practicality outweighs coolness in most cases.

Thanks for all of the ideas.

I told him that he'd probably get tired of carrying it but he thinks distributing the weight along his back will make it easier to carry. Regardless, it's what he wants.. so I was just trying to find something to help him out with carrying it.

The good news is - if it's too much, he'll just drop it off in the truck. No big deal.
