Title: If you could make a Film Costume, what would it be?
Post by: Lady Kathleen of Olmsted on February 22, 2013, 05:22:25 PM

Often we find inspiration from Films with great costuming, as we do from Portraits in making our Garb. What films inspire you to want to replicate  for your own personal use/wear?

Not that I have the time or a client who wants this, but this ranks high on my list..

A closer view of the handwork of this gown.

This gown was designed by Sandy Powell for Dame Judi Dench for 'Shakespeare In Love'.  Powell won her first of 3 Academy Awards for Best Costume Design. The other 2 Oscars were for 'The Aviator' and 'Young Victoria'.

What would be your Ultmiate Film Costume Project?

No question about it - Audrey Hepburn's black & white Ascot dress from "My Fair Lady".  I got to see it in a museum exhibit once, and it is STUNNING.

Lady K, I'm so glad you started this thread! You won't believe this, but "start Film Costume thread on RF.com" has been on my to-do list for weeks now! LOL

I have a list of movie costumes, but not the links ATM, but I'll start with something that almost counts (they showed it in theaters!).

Soprano Deborah Voigt as the Valkyrie Brunnehilde from the recent Met production of Die Walkure. I am completely captivated by her scale mail bodice and ruffly silk skirts.

A large image of her standing is here (http://elizabethcbunce.files.wordpress.com/2012/10/brunhilde_review-07.jpg?w=500&h=631), and you can see the rest of her sisters here. (http://elizabethcbunce.files.wordpress.com/2012/10/brunhilde_review-10.jpg)

I have a lead on the mail, and if I can finish some items on my real to-do list, I can start thinking about the skirt... but this is definitely a fantasy project. :)

Audrey Hepburn could wear ANYTHING and look good. She is my absolute favourite of all time!

;D  I've already done several. Last year, I did the pink bodice and yellow skirt from Mirror Mirror.  I also did a dress based on Dangerous Beauty.  In the past, I've done the "Just Breath" gown - once as it is on screen and the one I have now is "steampunk".  I've also done the wine colored velvet gown from Ever After.  Van Helsing - the red ball gown is one I've already done...hmmm..

This year, there are a few I'm considering doing for a variety of reasons.

Love Audry Hepburn,  the classiest actress of all time.  Her gown from the ball scene in My Fair Lady has always been my favorite, it was simple, to highlight the jewelry design.

To make (not that I possess the talents needed for this project):  the queen's red gown from Mirror Mirror.

I've been coveting the suit that Jane Birkin wore in Evil Under the Sun.
It had a long white skirt with a very nice slit up the side.
I'll take that hat, too.

OK so it isn't ren.....

Oooh!  I'll see your Audery and toss in a Grace.  Kelly that is!

Her 'Paris Dress' from Rear Window.  ::bliss::

I am actually working on a dress like this for an April event.  It's not going to be an exact reproduction as I cannot find the applique branches, but it's gonna be close.

Thank you, Lady Kathleen!  The exhibit I was at wouldn't allow photos, so they really thought I was crazy when I spent ages circling the exhibit, crawling on hands and knees to see the hemline, craning my neck to see the hat brim, etc.  I got some looks, lemme tellya!

We only get to pick one?   :o

In that case, I'd have to say Sif's armor from Thor.  Mainly because I just watched it the other day, so that one has currently popped to the top of the list.  :P

One can surely pick more than one costume from Film that not only turns the screws to be creative, but those we drool over when we go to the Cinema.

I love all the other ideas too!

Sif's outfit has been bumped off the top of my list, on account of watching another film with a cool costume I want to make.

Many years ago, I told my dad I would make him a doublet.  We even bought fabric, but were still a little fuzzy on the style.  Well, based on what he described, I realized last night that I have now found the perfect one to make for him.

Flynn Rider's, from Tangled!
