Title: Pattern search: Doublet Clive Owen wore in Elizabeth
Post by: The Wee Wench on September 13, 2013, 10:05:27 AM
Hello, all.

I just watched Elizabeth, the Golden Age yesterday (for the second or third time) and would love to find a doublet pattern that is similar to the style worn by Clive Owen/Walter Raleigh.  Specifically, the style that doesn't have a set in collar and is worn open at the top, with the neck and top turned over so the lining shows.  I hope that makes sense.

Ah, I found a photo, but it's not very detailed.

Nicki!

The Doublet that Clive wears in this film looks like a basic style found in Margo Anderson's Doublet pattern or the one used by SIMPLICITY and Fantasy Fashions. The collar looks more straight than curved, thus even with the rest of the front lines of the Doublet.

Collars can be adapted. I have done that a lot to get the "more open at the neck" look.

Will this work (bottom)? It's from Tudor Tailor (http://tudortailor.com/menspatterns.html):

If you zoom in on the Clive Owen photo, you can see that there is actually a seam at the collar. Unfortunately, I can't find an image of the Tudor Tailor pattern made up (in that view), but if you look at Ninya Mikaila's image gallery (http://www.ninyamikhaila.com/c16th.htm), there are several examples of doublets in other styles with this collar treatment--open with the revers flared out a little.

You might have to tweak it a little if you don't want it to have the peascod (pot) belly look to it; but it should be easy to Frankenpattern the collar design to a simpler doublet silhouette. (One of the first things I made, back before I had the slightest idea what I was doing, was a doublet-thing for my FIL with a collar like that. If *I* could figure that out, anybody can.  ;))

Thank you, ladies!

I was hoping it wasn't a set in collar but I think just squaring off the collar of the pattern I use now (Alter Years) and making it a bit taller may have the same effect when it's folded down rather than standing up.  I may have to play with it a bit.

Clive Owen in a doublet...oh my.
