Title: Calling all FOPS
Post by: Master James on July 15, 2008, 05:10:33 PM
First I don't know if this is the right place or not so feel free to move it if its not.

I have decided to do a FOP for Day of Wrong at MDRF this year since they don't have any at all and also I normally play a noble.  The garb is not the problem as I have  real nice orange/peach satin and pink satin that I'm going to do a puff and slash doublet, paned slops and jiffy pop hat out of.  When I get them done I'll post pictures.

My problem is the makeup.  What do you use?  How do you apply it so it stays all day and doesn't run?  I have a beard and mustache so how do I white those out without cutting them off?  I really want to do this correctly and I have some time so any help would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

FOPS?
Title: Re: Calling all FOPS
Post by: Capt Gabriela Fullpepper on July 15, 2008, 05:25:34 PM
A FOP  was more of a way of dress and acting and not so much make-up. While make-up would or could help convey FOPPISHNESS, it would not be a requirement. One of the best FOPS I can think of was in the Modern Scarlet Pimpernel with Jane Seymour in it. THis guy had FOP to a T. Heath Ledger in Cassanova was another.

If you were to do make-up a beauty mark would enhance that as would a whiter/paler face. Make sure you have a lacy hankerchief you wave around or carry tucket into your sleeve cuff.

Wikipedia says this about fops
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fop)

Hope that helps

Oh, a dandy!   (Well, that's the 18th c word for it)

For makeup, maybe the thick Elizabethan make-up complete with white powder and heavy rouge?

As the wikipedia entry states a Fops tends to be a later term as well

MNRF had one of the longest standing group of Fops from the late 1980's and stayed together as a group at least until 1999. Every year they would come up with new outlandish costumes often in the same color and acted as the "royal fashion consultants"

Sorry, MJ, don't have an answer the question at hand, but I did want to address this poster's question:

FOPS?

Yes, I don't understand the all-caps thing, either; don't let it confuse you.  The word "fop" just means, as Isabella said, a dandy (think Stephen Fry or Hugh Grant, for modern day foppish fellows).  Many fairs now have a "fop court," mostly male characters who dress in over-the-top court garb with colors you'd typically associate with fashionable 18th century clothing (pinks, pastels, etc).  At KCRF, the fop court consists of the queen's florist, tailor, jeweller (a woman, actually), etc.

Unfortunately, I can't find any quick shots of the male KCRF fops, but here's a picture of Lelia from the 2006 cast (I can't remember her character name, but she used to be a forum member here):

Lord Paulet is probably the forum's most, ahem, flamboyent fop portrayer (as Lord Austin Tatious).  I'm sure he'll weigh in when he pops by again.

Thanks Gem that is EXACTLY the look I'm going for!  I was hoping to hear from Lord Paulet as well and I think we had a few others from KCRF on the board as well.  Hope to hear from them.

I use a cream based make-up (clown paint) and then set it with baby powder. Cream again fro the eyes, you can use eye liner if you wish. Then top it off with lip stick. A good curly long wig or short straight wig is nice too.

Goo dluck and I cant wait to see pics

Master James....

May I suggest Ben Nye makeup. This is a brand of professional makeup developed for Universal Studios back in the 1930's used for Stage and Screen use. I wear it a lot when I do my Goth Vampire persona. It goes on so cleanly and wears so nicely, you can't tell you are wearing it.

Ben Nye can be found at most Costume Shops. There are kits, powders, shadows, etc for the professional look that wears all day.

Thank you both that is exactly what I was looking for.  And Sleepy that was going to be my next question, to wig or not.  Question is where would I get a nice wig that's not to expensive?  I'm not going to do this more than once a year or so, so I don't want to spend a lot but I don't want one of those Halloween store wigs that look so tacky either.  And having a shaved head, without one I was afraid of looking like a clown and I don't want to do that.

Might I suggest www.paulayoung.com (http://www.paulayoung.com) for wigs. I have found they are quite reasonably priced and they do look much better than those halloween wigs.  I know Frederick's of Hollywood had a nice long curly one but that was years ago when I saw it in their catalog.

Believe it or not, I have seen some pretty decent wigs at thrift stores, so that might be an option for you. You can find some amazing things at thrift stores.  I am disappointed to say that I have never seen any fops at the Northern California faires that I have been to!  Perhaps I just missed seeing them.  I'd love to enjoy their wonderful garb at faire! Sigh...

I have seen Fops with wigs in Pinks, Purples, Blondes, curly, China Doll Style, Short, Long, etc. It depends on what style you want.

Having worked many years in a Costume Shop, Lacey Wigs out of New York City carries wigs that are very nice, Rental Quality, reasonable priced that can be washed like regular hair, and kept in good condition for many years. Again, check with your local Costume Shops if they carry Lacey wigs. I have several of the Lacy Wigs that I have had for 6 years now and they still look like new.

Hope this helps.

Thrift stores are a great idea!  I'll have to check and see there.  Thanks for all the helpful information!

Thrift stores are awesome.  I have also purchased a few really nice wigs from ebay.  Depending on what you're looking for, you can get an amazing price on a brand new, good quality wig.  And some of the sellers will get it to you incredibly quickly without costing an arm and a leg in shipping.

I agree with Lady Katherine about Ben Nye, it is good stuff.  If you are prone to sweating you might consider "Barrier Spray" after the setting powder. This can be acquired at the same costume shop that you could get theatrical make-up.  The over-the-counter make up translucent powder if finer than baby powder and may not look as heavy. Another good "powder" that adds some white color is corn starch.

I use the Ben Nye stuff, very nice stuff.

Once you do a FOP you will do it more than nc a year, its sooooooooooooooo much fun!!!!!

LOL I'm sure it is Sleepy!  I'm really excited about doing it!

OK next question, I'm not shaving my beard or mustache so do I leave it alone or put the white makeup on it?
Title: Re: Calling all FOPS

Why even do the make-up. Do a fop modled after the Scarlet Pimpernel. He put on airs and seemed SO harmless and had such an over the top accent that was snob like. As the Wiki said Fop is a cloths horse that tries to be artistocratic and maybe he is. Bruce Wayne of Batman is a good example of a modern fop. Cruella De Vil could be considered a female fop, Elton John, David Bowie are all modern fops. Many 80's/90's Glam metal bands were Foppish

Another great Fop is Babington in Elizabeth R and even The Earl of Leicester Robert Dudley.

in this case of a fop you then just dress over the top and put on major aires. You keep the beard, don't need an over the top wig. Maybe a beauty spot, but that's it or light make-up.

A Major misconception of a fop is all the make-up and wearing women's clothing or styles. It's more how you act and react and how your clothing is very rich and gaudy and over the top.

Be vain about how you dress and appear. Always be worried about how you lok, Carry a small mirror and make sure you look your 100% best if not better. Make fun of how other's dress or appear since they are beneath you... or not

Just a note. The best way to powder down your makeup is to put the powder into a cotton sock. Tie it in a knot and use it like a puff! Work it on your hand first to get it flowing. Works great!

You can also use it to give a heavy dusting of powder to you facil hair if you wish. Just lean your head back and holding it over your beard "work" the sock so that the powder falls through.

Be sure to do the powdering outside and cover your garb if you've already dressed. Powder *will* be everywhere!

Use the white base thinly, believe it or not it will stay on longer that way. Poweder lightly the facial hair and your own if desired. Line the eyes top and bottom in a Jack Sparrow typle. Color the cheeks in two roundish spots of color on the cheeks, add lip color and a beauty spot and you will have a wonderful look.

I was looking at the Ben Nye makeup last night and I'm not sure which one to get.  Sleepy you said you use the clown makeup.  Is that regular one or the clown light one?  Also, what poweder should I get to set it/cover my beard with?  I saw they had a "natural", which looked white and a "super white".  Problem with the "super white" is they say it is not translucent which means any eye liner etc... would be covered up I'm guessing.  I figure if I get this all figured out now, I can then do some experimenting before the actual day.  Thanks everyone for the help on this!

Perhaps when you are experimenting, try without whiting out your facial hair and then with it whited out.  Take pics each way to help you decide which way you like it.

MAster JAmes,,,,,,

Ben Nye makes Clown White in various sizes. I suggest the smaller size to start with and a small White Face Powder. A eye pencil in Black will also be needed. I have the Ben Nye makeup brushes which are sable than acrylic hair. They wash easily and will last years. You can also get Makeup Brushes at most stores. I suggest a nice inexpensive set that has a face powder, blusher, eye, and lip brushes.

AS for shadows, Cover Girl and Maybeline make nice shadows for the eyes to get the look you want. Some FOPS wear red or pinks for lip color.

When applying the makeup base, be sure your face is clean with a Cleansing Creme rather than soap. A light moisturizer may help. Apply base with sponge applicators for the even look. You can use the white with an old toothbrush for your facial hair and eyebrows. Use a brush to apply the facepoweder to set adn do downward strokes. Putting on the makeup before getting dressed works better.

I suggest for removing makeup with a Cleansing Creme then finishing with a Toner with a COTTON ball to remove traces of makeup. It's easier on the skin. I also was a Skin Care Consultant years ago as well. To this day after 30 years, soap does not touch my face.

Hope these suggestions help. You can also renmail me if you need more information.

Ben Nye is the brand used today still for many films for it's ability to withstand the lights, sweating, etc. It's professional grade after all.

I will also suggest that depending on what you're wearing if it needs to go over your head AFTER putting your makeup on, cover your face with a towel or a pillowcase or something to keep your makeup from getting allover your clothes

James, my opinion, I would not go for the whitest clown white. The lighter clown white will still read as the correct period makeup without being too glaring.

A light, thin layer of white will be sufficient in giving a paler look to the skin with the powder. Not suggesting heavy. Though I have seen heavy in some Fops. I

As a poor college student, I swear by using regular old Baby Powder rather than the face setting stuff. works miracles. I wore white face all last year during TRF and I never, ever sweat off my make up, as opposed to others in my group who did, using real setting powder. I also used ben nye white face, though I can't remember if it was super white or not.

OH, and as for 'barrier spray', another cheap, lasting alternative. Hairspray. Close your eyes and mist that make up. I used it and, as I said, I never had make up problems.

WOW who knew there was so much in getting on makeup!  Thanks for all the help and advice!  I'm really excited about doing this!  I got the idea last year but never go the time to make the garb so I WANT to do it this year.  Getting the fabric the other day pretty much put me on the path to getting it done!  When I get it all done I'll post some pictures.  I can't wait!

I have done both the natural and "clown" white. I just prefer the "clown" white. Like other have said including yourself you will need to experiment some. Try diferent colors and powders and use what works best for you.

For the lip color, use Revlon's color stay lip gloss.  It has the color you apply on one side.  You let that dry, then apply the gloss over on the other side.  It keeps all day, so you can drink/eat or kiss someone etc.
Sleepy borrowed mine at Twig last month and looked fab-u-lesss!

I got mine at Target or Walgreen's.

Thanks for the information.  I finally put on lipstick the other day (for a Girl Scout camp of all things) and I didn't think it would hold too well without lots of touchups.  So knowing this will work well is good news.  And the reason I had the lipstick on is our camp theme is mystery and I work in a center were the campers come to do things, well we are doing lip prints and they needed to have one more set so I volunteered!  The girls said I put it on correctly, well good enough to get the prints anyway!  LOL  Again, thanks for the heads up!

I second Kate's recommendation for the Revlon Color Stay lip color in the long thin tube.  The darker the color, the longer it will last.  I've woke up in the morning with a full set of lips still on!  Now the glossy part of that stuff rubs off easily so you may want to keep that handy for pictures, etc. but your color will last all day if you don't eat too much greasy food.

Thank you one and all who provided help and advice to me on becoming a FOP!  This past weekend was our Day of Wrong and even though we were sewing the final things sitting in the parking lot of MDRF before I put it on, it was amazing and a GREAT deal of fun!  I still have more to do to the garb yet but had just flat run out of time so by the next time I wear it it should be even better!  I even had a number of people say that I should do that as a regular character!  Sleepy, as you said, it was a BLAST and I can't wait to do it again!  Anyway, here are a few pictures the debut of Sir P.A. (Poof Alot).

I shaved the mustache and gotee really close so once I took off the makeup I still had them albiet really short.  I've come up with a new addition to the garb for next year, I just purchase a gorgeous lavendar satin for a cape!  I think is should be fantastic and add a bit more to the garb.  Plus I'm going to make a pink cod piece as well.  Can't wait for next year!

KCRF runs I think late August through Columbus Day.  We were there Columbus Day weekend last year and only Count Leopold was there for one day.  I was a bit disapointed as I was looking forward to seeing the entire crew as well.  Well if you want to catch me in my FOP garb, come the final weekend of Maryland on Sunday.  That is out Day of Wrong when I will be wearing it again!  I caused enough of a stir, having 2 of us would be too much fun!  LOL

Thanks, I think if you are going to do a character you should do it right.   ;D  It helps too that a friend of mine at VARF plays a "gay" character and he spent a lot of time with a friend of his that was gay to get the walk and everything down right.  I just mimicked him and the wife gave me some pointers on standing properly as well.

Talked with my wife and she said I can go!! I just need to know where to fly in and what motels are the cheapest and closest. I just need a bed and a shower lol. I will rent a car at the airport. My plan is to fly out there Friday and leave on Monday morning. Is the Faire only Saturday/Sunday or Fri/Sat/Sun that weekend? How much are tickets at the faire, does someone have a link to the website? thanks. I'm really excited to try to make this happen.

Hey James the wig you have is there a name for it aka the style. I am looking at a new one. Im going to the wig shop tomorrow to look. I like the one that one of the FOPS from KCRF has but I cant recall his name. It is blonde and straight but of course mine would be red lol.

That is Sir Leapold if I remember correctly.  The wig I have is this one: http://www.paulayoung.com/Product.aspx?pid=169  Its a great wig and looks fantastic for me at least.  I have it in auburn.  Hope this helps.

OMG I found one and it's in Auburn. It's called the Lulu. I also found some more make up to dabble with. I'm going to try to match my goatee to the wig with makeup. Should be interesting.

LOL well good luck on that one!  I'm just going to cover up my gotee like I did this year by cutting it real short.  Did you get the wig at Paula Young?  I couldn't find the Lulu on the website.  Its too funny that you got one in Auburn too!  We should be the pair!

It's a Lacey wig. My other one is Auburn and it looks so good with the silver garb I wear. I did try balck and blonde too but they just didnt have the pizazz that the auburn does.

Yup have to agree with the Auburn.  I think it makes my FOP perfect.  Goes VERY well with the orange and pink.

A friend at the costume shop showed me some make up that can be used on hair. It looks like it will match the wig but I will have to see. I really like being a FOP without the goatee but I hate to keep shaving it off. And it will help people answer the question...am I a girl or guy...which I have been asked.

I will let yoou know how the new make up goes and post some pics of the new wig once I get some time to sit down and put it all together. Going to Vegas next week so that is firt on the agenda of getting ready for that.

Ok I did this really quick before work. This is my new hat and wig. Then I colored by beard quick with the make up. It would look better if I took my time but I was in a hurry. I think it would work and gives me a nice option to not have to trim my beard all the way down. I normally have dark brown hair.

That looks like it works pretty darn good.  How easy is it to get out?  Does it just wash out or do you have to wait for it to wear off?  My only possible concern over that is how will the lipstick work with the beard showing?  I really liked the fact that the lips really stood out with the white face.  I might have to experiment too.  What is the name of the makeup you got for your beard and where did you get it?  Thanks.

I dont remember the name off hand but I will look. If you cant find it there I can send you some to play around with. My goatee is pretty ragged right now and Im sure once I trim it down and put the white face on the lipstick will show just fine. Like you said I need to play around with it and see. Just need some time to do that. It is water based so it washes out with water.

Looking forward to finding out about it!  Let me know when you can.  I'd like to play with it.

You have gotten my husband's interest.  He has very dark hair and changing it might be nice for faire. :)
