Title: Pattern for Pirate hat?
Post by: Lady Caroline on July 23, 2008, 11:43:04 AM
Hi all,

Does anyone know of a website that has instructions for making a pirate hat?  The only ones I could find, were for paper party hats, basically for kiddies.  I have the Milton Pirate Fest coming up, and I'm afraid that if I order one it won't come in time.  So I want to try to make one.  Thank you!

I think C could be modified.  This was recently discontinued, so you might be able to find it at Joann and Hancock still.

Perhaps you could try using McCall's pattern #4805:

Hat C has a wired brim, and it should be easy enough to fold it up into a tricorn shape.

Have you tried making one of the paper hats? Could you make one out of fun foam/plastic canvas/heavy interfacing and then cover it with material? Use wired ribbon around the edge, or sew in some floral wire to help stiffen it.

I made a South Pacific/Castaway style pirate hat out of one of the $1.99 straw hats that you find in Walmart/Hobby Lobby/Michaels. I bought one that fit my head, ran about an inch of warm water in the bath tub, and soaked the brim of the hat for a couple of minutes while I gathered up some clothes pins. When I took the hat out of the tub, the brim had softened up to the point that I was able to fold it into a tricorn shape without breaking. I used the clothespins to hold it in place, 2 per corner, and then jammed it on my head to ensure that it would fit. I then set it aside to dry.

Before it dried completely I removed the clothespins to avoid getting a permanent indention where they were. Once it was completely dry I added a couple of feathers and a pin. I don't have a picture yet, but I'll post one as soon as I can.

I plan of working in this at the start of TRF, as it should be much cooler than my leather hat.

I fashioned my Cavalier Hat from Lynn McMaster's Elizabethan Tall Hat pattern by adding 6" to the edge of the brim. I plan to make another one in Black and use a bias Ribbon for the finished brim edge. I taught myself a trick in doing nicer brims that way.

Try here: http://garbmonger.tripod.com/cavalier/cavalier1.html  It's for a Cavalier hat, but you should be able to modify it.

Do you knit, or know someone who does? The instructions at http://knitlikeapirate.com/projects/tricorn.shtml (http://knitlikeapirate.com/projects/tricorn.shtml) make a nifty hat by knitting then felting the hat into shape. I would, however, skip the eyelash yarn.

I love mine. It's purple and matches my pirate coat exactly, and it fits perfectly because it was actually shaped onto my head. I can't wear it this year because I'm on cast.

See you in Milton!
