Title: For my Flamingos
Post by: LadyStitch on July 29, 2008, 09:46:50 AM
Edit: Duff if you are reading this, STOP NOW! Don't spoil your surprise. As for those who know Duff, don't blab and spoil the surprise for him.  Too much work has gone into this surprise for it to be blown.  So  ssshhh..... no spilling the beans to the Duff Man.   ;D

-----

I was already planning on making a do rag or something so my hubby and his best bud (aka flamingo. It's a Boston Legal thing  ::) )

Now my hubby's flamingo, Duff, was in a bad motorcyle wreck a week ago (6 broken rips, broken hand, collapsed lung, lasarated liver, and kidney- but alive and still wanting to chase wenches)
As a surprise for him my hubby wants me to make them matching "flamingo" outfits.

So far we are looking at matching flamingo pink shirts, and black drawstring pants. Both have black boots.  I'm trying to work out where I can have a pink plume in their outfit, but not sure yet.

These guys have the personalities to pull off these costumes. (Light a candle for me when they are at TRF together in costume.  I'm going to need it!)

I'm asking for ideas for style of shirts, and any details you think they should have.  The louder and cheezy the better.

So ideas anyone?

A what?????

Should it be cavalier?  Poet? with a yoke? Ruffles on the hems and collars for the shirt?

I found a place that has a flamingo patch.  Not sure if I want that on the backside of the pants or on the chest of the shirt?

It would be more "Boston Legal" if you had the patch on their rear.  (Denny Craine  ;D)

Hope his buddy gets well soon!!!

Yeah he decided to surprise us and not tell us that 1) he lost his cell phone , so we didn't know how he was doing.  2)  that he got out of the hospital early.

I like the idea of the flamingo patch on the but.

Now he wants a cape to go with it, so how long would you make a muskateer/ cavalier  cape?

We found some flamingo pink Cotton/Linen blend fabric for the Shirt and pants.

So any of you know where i might find a 4-6" tall Flamingo patch/applique.  All i have been able to find was a 3 inch tall regular one and a 7 inch tall Sequined  one.

Ooh a shorter cape would be hilarious if edged in pink maribou!  ;D Very flamingo.

Shirt mock up got done this weekend. He liked it so much he wants me to finish it as a "back up" shirt for his kilt outfit. So much for a "throw away" mock up.

Now I'm working on his Pants.  The pants open at the sides and wants 3/4" to 1 inch buttons down the side. (So he can show off his tights.) What are some good button places you  would recomend?  I know equilter.com (I really like them.)  but any place else?

I got the shirts done tonight, except I was 2 inches short on trim for the last cuff.  :( Thankfully it is a common trim .

What do you think?

Oh, that's neat!   ;D

I love this whole idea.  What about lining a black cape for each of them with this?

We are going to dye cotton twill  flamingo pink, trim it with a boa, and line it with a pink taffata.  ;D

The front of the shirt will be laced up with either white, black , or pink cording.  I'm doing tiny button holes for the "grommets". unless I have my tutor's professional grade corset grommet setter.  I'm not doing metal grommets.
We found some nice wooden buttons for the cuffs. We are now looking for nice 1" (ish) buttons to go along the pants leg.

I'll try to get a picture of the mock up pants posted tonight.

I have some hot pink ostrich plumes if you are in need just holler

The first pair of pants were finished last night.  I'm still looking for buttons for them.  I have had to cut my sewing time in half. Our downstairs neighbor has issues with my sewing machine. (see vent in mundane section for details)

I am determined to get the pants down ASAP.  And get onto the cape.  I got the pattern laid out last night.  I have the flamingo pink denim ready, and a less bright satin to line it with.  I have the marabou trim for the hem and along the edge of the flat collar.  We have a gold cord to tie it on.

The Flamingo's made the debut on Saturday at TRF.  I think they look great but I think they need something more.  I'm thinking large flamingo appliques on the capes, trim on collar and edge of capes.  Then more gold or red trim on the shirt and pants.  The hubby added a hat , and a new "companion" called Quizzik. Any suggestions on what more to add or if you saw them let me know.  :)

How about tabbards a la Three Musketeers, with a flamingo back and front?

Oh, and they look great, by the way!   ;D ;D ;D
Title: Re: For my Flamingos

Had not thought about the tabbards.  We were thinking of doing stylized F's on the capes that mirror each other.   The hubby wants more feathers on the collar of the capes.  We were also thinking of adding some sort of simple mask as well.

One person at the faire said we needed to have bells on the boots but that might be a bit much.

This is awesome!!

I do think adding black into the shirt somehow would be nice.  Maybe line the collar area with a black trim or add black buttons... it would tie in the black hat and black boots and break up the solid pink of the shirt.

I also like the idea of a large black F on their back's, maybe in cursive...  Maybe even change out the sash for a black one....

When will ya'll be back at TRF?  I'd love to see the "Flamingo's" in person!!  I'll be there every weekend except Roman Bacchanal

They need ginormous pink feathers in their hats..

Maybe when the yard stuff comes out again get lawn flamingos to use as walking sticks or put into sword frogs...Think Alice in Wonderland kinda thing

Unfortunatly will only go to TRF one weekend a year, and that was 2nd weekend.  Yes we would like to go back but we never can get back there in time.   :(

We found a trim we like that we were going to put on the neck.  We are thinking of trim on the neck and cuffs then down each side of the pants opening.
We are thinking of adding more pinkish colors of feathers for their hats.  Oh and they loved the idea of the flamingo walking sticks.  We are also thinking of adding laced edged hankies.

There was one "small" request that was made by the boys.  An invisible zipper fly in the front.  The 30 minutes to get in and out of it for privy breaks cut down on their drinking  ;)

I have to say they got quite abit of attention at TRF.  We kept being asked if it was for Breast cancer awareness month.  We support it but it was a happy quicident.  They call themselves "The flamingo brothers"  but some called them  the "Flaming O's"   We arent' sure which in more fitting.

The one comment we kept getting "It takes a real man to wear pink" . " And  "M'Lord you need to fire/punish/ flog your washing women.  She has washed your red tights with your white shirt.  She must be punished."  ;D

i was asked to make a pink gown for a special project at work. (Long story)  It was suppose to be a 'disposal' costume, but after people kept liking how I looked with the flamingos they said I needed to make this dress to go with them.

Any suggestions what I can do to this dress to make it more  "intresting"  I'm thinking along the lines of fairy queen or something.

Help!

Edit:  Here is a picture of us from Halloween.  I was the pink pirate's pink princess.

You could add an over skirt of sheer pink stuff... add a bunch of pink lace..

Title: Re: For my Flamingos
Post by: DragonWing on November 05, 2008, 08:26:22 AM
Yeah, I agree. Lots of pink toiling and maybe pink toiling on the sleeve coming off like a trumpet from the end at the elbow. That would give a wing like affect when you moved your arms. I would do a double layer for the sleeves and a triple layer on the skirt.  ;)

just a suggestion.
Title: Re: For my Flamingos
Post by: LadyStitch on November 05, 2008, 08:42:24 PM
The Flamingo's asked that when they are together for me NOT to be in pink.   It would detract from their skit.   On the other hand having the pink dress around for when it is just the hubby and I  might not be a bad idea.  I'll keep playing with it.   Who knows what kind of left overs from adding to their outfits may bring me. :)

It has one layer of tule on the skirt.  and a petticoat underneath.  I'm not a fan of long sweepy sleeves.  I'm a bit of klutz and knowing me I'll find someway to spill the mead with those sleeves.

Updates on the Flamingos:

Now that the holidays are over we are working toward our next faire (Scarby)
1) Add an invisible zipper fly to the pants. (For some reason the boys have trouble actually getting in and out of their trousers.  Why is that SO important?  ;D )
2) Some one returned 2 12 in. magenta/hot pink sequined flamingo appliques, and we  snatched them up cheap.  Check one off that list.
3) We are putting a cursive F on the opposite side from the Flamingo on the capes.
4) We are adding more marabou to the capes, and more gold trim as well.
5) We are adding more trim to the shirts to make them fancier.
6) Oh and belt loops. (Why would they want something to keep their pants up?  ;D )

The Flamingo's are  also planning on making an appearance at the southern California faire on final weekend.  The boys have said they want to make sure they are noticed.  Do you think they will?  ;)

Picked up an additional $50 in trims for the flamingo's yesterday.  We were miffed they didn't have more of this Gold trim with magenta pink running through it.  We struck gold with this persian style tapestry tim that had black pink, gold in it.   You know it is getting scary when it is your husband that is dragging you from fabric store to fabric store to find 'just' the right trim.   ;D

Once I get noticeable progress done on them I'll post updated pictures.

Even painting a flamingo type beak on the mask could work!

I just showed my mom this thread and she thinks the Flamingos are a great idea (she's a huge BL fan)

I don't know if this will be a good keep your fingers crossed or not.  My rogues best friend (the other flamingo brother) got accepted to be cross trained in the military.  This means a $$$$!!!$$$ more money for him. Problem is that by TRF this year he could very well be in Germany.  :-[ :'(

There is a micro slim chance that he could get a position her in the states but it is VERY slim.

This mean the only chance the Flamingo's would be seen together for a while will be (hopefully) Scarby, and then (double hopes)  at the California pleasure faire on closing weekend.

yay I want him to have a good job, boo that the new improved Flamingo brothers won't be at TRF this year. And for once we are going OPENING weekend.

Tonight we added more to the outfits.  I sent my husband to Pet's mart to get pet food.  He came home with the pet food and new item for his costume.... a feather & belled "wand"  OK it was a cat teaser but it matched his outfit.

I have created a monster!  :o

There is a pirate play going on this summer.  Depending on which part he get's my husband may end up wearing his flamingo as one of his costumes.  LOL

Soon as I can tackle him long enough I'll have my husband model the outfit for us.

My Flamingo and I have gotten season passes to Scarby this year.  We have enjoyed the past two weekends.  I must say the attention he is getting alone has been interesting.  We don't know who gets more attention him or Quizzik his drabit.

Most of the comments have been.  "M'Lord you need to whip your wench for washing your reds with your whites."  OR "You have got to have some  'ca-hones' to pull that off."
