Title: Flash Drive Issues aka Calling All Geeks!
Post by: Once Debauched on August 01, 2008, 01:56:40 AM
I've been attempting to copy music onto several different thumb drives, but keep encountering the same problem.

The drives hit a point and then won't allow anymore information to be copied to them even tho the drives are not close to full. I've experienced this with 2 different 8GB, a 2GB drive and a 1GB.

I've tried reformatting the drive, using different ports, even different computers, but still get the same results.

I currently have the 2GB plugged in and the stats are as follows:
Used Space: 310MB
Free Space: 1.65GB
Capacity: 1.96GB

The drive isn't even a quarter full and yet I continue to receive the the error window:

ERROR COPYING FILE OR FOLDER
Can not copy *file name*: The directory or file can not be created.

What am I missing that won't allow me to add more data to the flash drives?  I've been dealing with this for DAYS now and I'm starting to pull muh hair out.

HELP!

What I found doing a search for the error you are getting.  Hope this helps.

When copying files to your usb drive, try not to put too many files to the root directory or folder. This may cause an error eg "Error 0X80070052" or a message is displayed that says "the directory or file can not be created". This occurs because most usb flash drives are formatted with the FAT file system. This file system places a limit on the number of files in the root folder. To overcome this, create folders in the root folder and copy your files into the relevant folders.

Actually, I asked around and ONE person had the answer.

They are bogus flash drives being sold on eBay.  The bios has been reconfigured to show more memory than they actually have. The only way to discover this is to fill the drive to capacity.

Needless to say I'll not be buying anymore flash drives off eBay and I'm filing a dispute with Paypal and reporting the sellers as selling fraudulent devices.

Oh well, 5+ years on eBay and this is my first real issue.
