Title: Who sharpens your scissors?
Post by: LadyStitch on August 04, 2008, 01:16:15 PM
I'm at my wits end trying to find a place to sharpen my scissors.  I've talked with the local fabric stores and they have no clue.  I even checked with the local quilting guild and they said they just buy new scissors.

I've got two pair of 'antique' (IE granny's)  scissors that just need a sharpening.  And a pair of pinking shears that need sharpening and they are good as new. If only I can find a place to do it.

Who do you go to?  OR do you guys just get a new pair?

look around for a lawn mower or saw supply place. Most people who can sharpen mower or saw blades can sharpen scissors.
Here in Dallas, we have D & R saw & tool.

Check your local mom and pop hardware store (ACE hardware farms theirs out.)  I've always taken mine to Joann's (who out sources.) Generally takes 2 weeks, but that's why I have two pairs of scissors.

Be old fashioned, check the yellow pages for sharpening.

Our local JoAnn's and Hancock periodically have signs posted about scissors sharpening. They usually have the signs about a month in advance, but I haven't seen one for awhile.

My dad.

He did them for a hairdressing place, and he has a little sign up at the local fabric store.

Yeah, I know, totally helpful, aren't I? ;) I'm SF Bay Area, if you are anywhere near.

Oh, he does pinking shears and knives, too. My dad's awesome.

I'm in north central Texas.  I've checked the local Joann's and Hancocks. I'll try calling the local lawnmower sharpening places.  Worth a shot.  They don't make this type of scissors anymore and they work great with my small hands, and in tight cornors.

also, we have a guy who does our scissors at petsmart, (for the groomers) but i'm not sure how long his takes... he usually brings them back on his next round... but you could try a hairdressers or a grooming salong and see where they get theirs done.

I don't kow if they do this anymore, but the large grocery stores used to have someone to sharpen knives, and that person also did scissors.  Maybe some of the fancy grocery stores, in the butcher shop, would be able to help you.

I do!  For my Fiskars and other commercial scissors, I use one of these:  http://www.sewandso.co.uk/ran1783-0.html

For little scissors I have one of these:http://www.dickblick.com/zz570/15/

My hand forged scissors go back to their maker, a Mr Wilkinson, in Sheffield.
