I believe the site's issue was due to a lapsed security certificate. Probably didn't get renewed on time. Looks like DeadBishop has it all fixed up now. I hope he and his wife are doing ok.

Yep, the site seems to be running smoothly at the moment. I'm with you @laedyfaire, I wish it were as lively as it used to be. Unfortunately, today's instant gratification social sites get all of the attention.

But you know, maybe these older internet forums will get their own Renaissance. Trends are unpredictable. They could become trendy again. Who knows!

So it was near 80 in the Chicago 'burbs on Friday, with severe winds and stormy weather at night, today (Saturday) hazy with the dust swirled up by the 70mph winds yesterday, and temps near 70, and tomorrow we may have snow :) Gotta love the transition months  :)

To further our unsettled current weather, we hit 70 on Tuesday, then yesterday temps were in the 40s, with that kind of slushy rain that is trying to be snow, then tornado watches for most of the day with an actual warning with the sirens going off around 5:15pm. I was at work and we had to get all of our patrons off of the computers (NOT an easy task!) and they either had to leave or go into the lower level. Gracious. My trees have been budding for a few weeks.

Our director reminds us not to argue; if they choose to sit there, secure the place the best we can, and head down to the lower level. We humans can be a really daft species.

We have been horrible Procrastinators this year. Usually we have them done in February, March at the latest. But we've found ourselves overwhelmed this year. We will be doing ours next week. Almost last minute.

That hurts. We owed over 7k last year. That was a shock. We've since adjusted our withholding. Hopefully we break even this year.

Good luck to you all; it's such a trepidatious time of year. My dad died when I was 2, and my brother was 6 mos. and mom was expecting our youngest brother. She used insurance to pay off the house, then we lived on social security until she went to nursing school when I was about 14. I asked her once how she managed, and she said every month she wrote the checks, and said a prayer when she mailed them. That's probably not financial advice most experts would give :)

One of my dad's brothers was a pompous sort of guy, and she asked him once who he was voting for. She said he very happily talked for several minutes about the election and his candidate's qualities, then asked her if that helped. She said yes; she wanted to know who he was voting for so she could vote for the other guy. The rest of the group in the room laughed, but his jaw just dropped :)

Bristol closed yesterday, and for the second year in a row, we didn't make it at all. It's only about an hour and a half away, but it was another oppressively hot summer, and an expensive one. Looking forward to next July :)

We were actually on our way home, driving through WI and IL and during a fuel stop we saw several car loads of our people heading to Bristol. We would have loved to visit but we were on a schedule.

Faire is very difficult for us right now. Our normal faire is open during theater season, so we haven't been able to make that one in a while, and closer faire has been a let down for a long time so we rarely visit that one.

maybe next year for you :)  the heat is most definitely the number one decision if we go or not, and yes, the price!!!!

I know the feeling of being let down by faires...my home faire has changed so much. it is no longer a day of magical escape..just a pleasant day away from the house. But expensive :(

I've been watching uploads of videos of people going to Bristol, then the Castle in Muskogee, and Scarborough, because those are the 3 faires I've visited. I keep looking for familiar faces :) It's been interesting to watch those, because I generally go for the shows, and most of these focus on the food or buying things, and seldom show clips of performers. That could also be because of copyright and public performance concerns (showing my inner librarian there :) ). I realized, too, that I don't believe I've ever gotten a turkey leg at faire, and while I like turkey, I'm perfectly ok with that.

I've never personally purchased a turkey leg, but I have had a bite of someone else's. Definitely not my go-to food at faire. If we are visiting Sherwood then my go-to is the Mediterranean restaurant or the Ogre Toes.

Several years ago, my brother and his wife came to Bristol with my middlest daughter and I. My SIL, from Costa Rica, had no idea what to expect at the faire, and it was not really to her liking. She was very upset that there wasn't healthier food choices, and the idea of walking around the grounds for several hours just made her more upset with every step. I think my brother should have prepared her better for what the whole thing entailed. My brother enjoyed himself, though. He bought one of those hanging chairs, and still has it in the little shade house he has in his backyard.

The faire is definitely not for everyone. Creatures of comfort will find the dusty air unbearable. The heat will force many to abandon ship early in the day. And those who lack imagination will just look at the rest of with disdain.

But for the rest of us, faire will be a magical place. Well, as long they can refrain from becoming commercial sell-outs.

no turkey legs here either....I think our faire days are over for the season...the NYRF is way too crowded the rest of the season...3 weekends left..and man, every quiet area we would like to go to escape and feel the "whimsy" are now packed with tented vendors. Still nice to see huge crowds of folks just enjoying themselves..the garbed and the Danes, especially in these hostile times, but shoulder to shoulder and the weaving in and out gets old. and tiring for this old lady.

love those sky chairs!  I find it such a drag to go with "newbies' bc I feel obligated to show them the big hot spots that are usually jam packed.

always on the look out for YouTube videos and yes, they do seem to focus on shopping :/

Our local faire is TRF. It also used to have nice open grassy areas where folks could chill out in the shade. They have since been taken over by vendor booths. And it seems every time we visit, the prices on food and drink have increased significantly.

The faire is now under new ownership so I'm hopeful that the new owners will be less greedy and more about the magic and imagination. Time will tell.

There's something ironic in remembering how the "old days" of our various renfaires used to be; I don't think they ever did a skit about it, but I can imagine the Monty Python guys sitting around in a field in 1480 or so, and saying, How 'bout those Middle Ages, eh? Those were the days!

I do hope so for your sake. At NYRF, being close to the five boroughs AND social media!! they will always draw the crowds, who seem increasingly younger and many first timers who do not even know that was once there..the hidden spots..the pub in the woods, the open lanes, the interactive actors, the many musical bands...all gone.

Hahah...sounds like it would be a great skit, Refmom :)))))

stay well !
