I'm curious..are we not allowed to have them here? or what, I've looked all over my profile and cannot find the spot to add an avatar. This forum is identical to another I am on, and I can put an avatar in there. sorry if this has already been posted.

I'm not positive but I think DB temporarily shut them off for now.

thank you for answering lady Serena. It's frustrating to ask a question-and see that 68 people have looked at it but no one seems to know. And there are..the last time I checked..quite a few moderators on here, so just a bit frustrating.

Hi LD, sorry I didn't post here.  I had about 30 people ask via renmail about this same thing, and thought you were one of them.  We've turned them off to keep any files from being uploaded to the forum's server, as it could pose a security risk, and the last thing we need is more hackers messing with this new forum after all the work I did to get it up and running.  They may be turned on at a later date, but at this point we're just playing it safe.

Probably a good idea to stick on the side of caution for now, god forbid there's another crash.  *crosses fingers*

No cupcake, I believe what DB is saying is that we will not be able to use avatars. The people who already have them got them up before the ability to add an avatar was removed.

Would that be correct DB?

Not to sound like a jerk but those of you that already have avatars may want to remove them just so that this question doesn't keep coming up. I understand your reason for removing the ability install avatars.

I had a devil of a time getting photos up and now they are so large you can make out my pores and I can't figure out how to size them.  A photos 101 guide (assume mediocre computer skills) would be helpful.

I haven't completely abandoned the idea of having avatars, they're just on hold for the time being.  I don't want to build a fire just yet if it's going to attract wild animals...

we the few who did put avatars/photos in the profiles before the option to do so was removed,
don't have the ability to remove, change or turn them off.  the profile photo field is not there anymore. 

i expect the ability will be restored, & everyone will be able to add their own before too long,

Yes, you'll have to resize the image yourself.  Some online hosts off the ability to resize during upload or even  afterwards.  I'm alos looking to see if there is a setting here that will default all images to a certain maiximum size to help.

This clears up a lot.................  I thought I was just stupid.  To bad I've spent an hour trying to figure it out..........

I did the same thing Mistress C, I couldn't figure it out and thought I was missing something. In time I'm sure DB and John will work it all out.

DB, I'm not sure on this forum but the last one I was running had a setting that would place a maximum size on the pictures. Basically if your pic was too large it would shrink it to the maximum allowable size. This one might have something like that.

There is a free online site that allows you to resize your pictures. http://www.resizr.com/ (http://www.resizr.com/)

Its fairly easy to use. It has size templates and after your finished you right click and save your photo. Then you can upload it to which ever photo posting site you use (example: Photobucket).

Thanks for the link, Rage.  I was trying to remember what that site was.  As for the settings here, I'll be doign some tweaking as time allows to hopefully take care of that on the back end.

This new forum doesn't allow a picture to be added to your profile like the previous one did, I'm afraid.  We've been asking that everyone post an intro thread and add a picture to the first post.

That section is for the "Avatar" setting which displays next to all of your posts.  At this time, we are not turning the avatars on.

I know you must be swamped getting the new site up and running.  And I know that we are all appreciative of your efforts.  The results are great.  You have created a wonderful place for the Ren community.  It is the best.  That said, I wanted to put in my plea for a return of photos.  That is one of the things about the old site that I miss the most.  Having to find photos in intro threads is okay for now, but it would be good if we could get pics directly form profile pages.

I really miss having the profile pics.  :'(  You never realize how much you use something until you don't have it anymore.

Yeah, after some discussion with other RF'ers I voiced that it's so much easier for me to recognize people and who they are when they post or when we meet in person.  Names just don't stick well unless I have a pic.  oh well, I am very sure our great master admin has a good reason for not allowing it at the moment.  :)

For those missing profile photos it has been suggested that you make an Introduction post and put a photo in the introduction.

I know :)  I was just expressing my opinion.  I don't like the banners and crap myself...but an avatar pic...I miss that.

In the early "life raft" days of the forum there was an option for an avatar.  I clicked one of the preloaded avatars. Due to the repeated hacking of the previous version of this site, the avatar option has been removed. I cannot turn off the avatar that i do have.

For those missing being able to see the pictures of people to put faces with them, I use a long workaround.

Click on the person's name or their profile icon (little person with notecard)
At the bottom of their profile is a link to "Show the last posts of this person."
Click that link to display a list of their posts.
Scroll through their list to see if they've create an Intro thread, go to that to see if they added a picture.

Is it an ugly workaround? Yep
Do I expect that our Admins will eventually get a more elegant solution? Yep

Have no fear Sir Edward de Johns, thought it may seem unfair that some can and others can't have them right now. I have no doubt our admins will work out a solution for all soon enough.

Some people got avs put in before they were turned off. And since they were turned off, they cannot get in and remove them. So its not like there are a select group that can use them, just people who got to it before it was changed.

Well, DB is being tricky and changed his, but he's one of the main guys here so I feel he has the right.

You probably have the wrong code. The forum use s Forum code with Bracket [ ] but the avatar uses links. you need a URL like this http://www.mypage.com/mypic.gif   If you're using photobucket you need to edit thier code

they give this, you only need the highlighted part

Help!  I'm a wee bit blurry and the real photo that Kirk took isn't blurry in the least.  Again, I'm a newbie at messing with photos, and confess complete and utter ignorance, although I imagine it's a resolution problem(?).  Can someone suggest the fix for it (I'm at photobucket).  Thanks!

I am such a computer dummy, but after about a half hour, I got it to work!

I tried to resize it in Photobucket, but that was beyond me.  So I guess I'll just look blurry.

Yes the avatar/profile photo is working.  What I can't get to work is posting a photo within the message.  I see many post photos of the day, or their Felines etc (as examples) but I get the hyperlink instead (SIGH). ???

You need to add the image tag around the photo's hyperlink.  It should look like this minus the * in the tags.

It appears that you are accidentally clicking on the third button instead of the second button. 
If you are certain that your cursor arrow is located over the second button when you click on it, then you may have a video problem on your pc which causes the cursor to be a little bit off target. 
Any non standard cursors could cause this effect.

If that still does not work, then as a work around I recommend that you copy the IMG text string directly from your photobucket album and paste it here without using the buttons in the reply window. The IMG string should be the fourth box below each of your pictures on photobucket like this.

OK I went to the DrPic.com sight and resized my photo.  I then saved it to their web page and coppied and pasted the address into the avatar spot on my profile.  I don't have any on line photo accounts, I was hoping this would work, but does not seem to have been effective as I can't see my photo.  Any suggestions?

Piece of cake.  I fixed this for you.  You had the entire webpage listed for the image URL, rather than just the image URL itself.

The link you're wanting to use is for a page and not an image specifically.  There is actually a "links to the photo" spot on that page that has the image URL rather than the page URL.

Hello, I noticed no body has posted on this boared since May of last year. So is there any way to upload pictures for our profile page?

Where are you looking that makes you think this board hasn't been active since may of last year?  If you look at the post right before yours, it was posted on Feb. 19th 2009.  And there were several posts to many different areas of the forum just today, as every day since it's inception.  I believe you may be looking at the first page of this thread in particular, whereas there are actually 5 pages.

As to answer your question, there is no way to post a picture to your profile; all you can do is post an avatar.

Yes, it's most likely a hot linking issue.  I can take the URL for your picture and open in in a seperate screen, so it does work, there's probably just a bandwidth restriction from the site where it's hosted though.  I'd suggest finding another online host like Photobucket or similar and try again.

ok- i had tried Photobucket but it was giving me problems on their end... I'll try again tonight- thanks!

There are a number of other image hosting sites besides Photobucket that you could also try.  Find one that bests suits your usage.
