Title: False hair?
Post by: gem on August 14, 2008, 06:39:35 PM
I know we've had a few posts in the past about where to get false hair (information that is certainly welcome again! :D).  But what I'm wondering is, how do you work with it?

My own hair is a little longer than shown in my profile pic--a braid reaches a couple of inches past my shoulders.  I'd like a much longer braid, but I'm not sure what to do, where to go, how to start.

Tips, please!  Any and all!

Gramercy!

What -I- do, is I've got a hair piece one one of those big claw clips. I put my hair into a pony tail and then clip the hair over my pony tail and I look like I've got this massively curly pony tail instead. I keep curlers in it constantly, and, since it's not real human hair, it's synthetic, I leave it in my car for a day after i re-put the curlers in it, since its less about "curling hair" and more about "bending plastic" so... I kind of melt the plastic into...curls. It's weird I suppose, but it works for me. I got mine at Sally's beauty supply, but for a braid like you're sayig... you might want to get the clip in hair tracks and clip them vertically from the base of your neck, up as high as you want, and braid your hair normally, it'll just be longer, but it'll get thinner after your real hair ends, you know? That's all I can think, btu I dont know TOO much other than my own little hair fall.

I am the queen of run on sentances, I am aware of this. lol

Just this year I picked up a hair clip similar to what Volans has. My own hair is just past my shoulders, you can see it in my web site and the clip in my profile picture, and if you want I can send you a picture without my tall hat. It's made by Mona Lisa collections and you can do a Google seach of their products. Your hair is about the same length as my own real hair.

I picked mine up at Cheyenne Frontier Days from a lady down in Arizona who sells a lot to Ren faire ladies and victorian renactors. If need be I can get you her email address, but she does not have a web site to display products. Once I tried on the hair I was sold and can even use it to go out mundane. I got one that is a very close match to my colored hair. Toki loves the look both faire and mundane

The way she showed me to put it into my hair was to pull back my hair above the ears and around and put it into a pony tail/Topknot then tighten it. I then take the back hair that covers my neck and make another pony tail that sits a little higher than the base of my neck hair.

Once I have done this I take the lower hair from the base of my neck and make a bun with both together then bobby pin the heck out of that bun (Usually 4 one on each side top and bottom)

Once I have that done I put on the clip then pull some hair forward to make it look better and bobby pin that, then do the same on the sides.

Now the one issue you may have is with the clip a hat does not fit the head in the same way. But I imagine if you had very long hair and pinned it up, it would do the same thing. This gives my hat a little sitting forward effect that looks good.

One extra thing I do is keep my side temple hairs down and then curl them up and spray the tar out of them with product. My own hair will tke a curl very easy, but keeping it that way is impossible.

Hope this helps

see this is something I had been wondering, because I had purchased a wig from party city and I suppose it was a cheapo or something, but it was very gross looking and was hard to style.

Personally having worn wigs in the past even 3/4 wigs, I found them very hot and hard to maintain. I have a girlfriend who wheres them all the time as she is going bald. I wore them just for fun.

I find that the hair clip pieces are lighter and cooler and don't rest as heavily on the nape of the neck.

Many beauty stores have hair clips and I would look there over a Walgreens, but even then expect to pay a good dollar for a nice hair clip or even a good wig. Cheap wigs are just that cheap and do not look natural and do not last.

I'm sure you can google hair piece clips or something similar to find a good hair clip on piece as well as the Mona Lisa collection I mentioned above.

Sam Moons is where I find all my affordable fake hair peices. I have braids, clips on pony tails, curly falls etc. Or go find a wonderful wig store and let them guild you to what works for you. Good luck and I hope you find just the right thing for your *look*

xtensions are what is added to your hair for a long period of time. Many actors, actresses, models use them. Having had extension in the past i will say 1 thingthey are a pin in the arse, expensive and not worth the trouble even if they are long term. Hair falls and hair pieces are similar. Here is a good link for them but once again they are not cheap as they are quality pieces http://www.wilshirewigs.com/Hairpieces-c-39.html (http://www.wilshirewigs.com/Hairpieces-c-39.html)

Hair pieces tend to be more full were as falls tend to be pieces and clip on's from my understanding.

I wear a fall - or a 3/4 wig - I THINK it would work for your braid.

When my hair was long I parted it from ear to ear and put the back in a pony tail .. then covered the pony with the wig (mine came with two combs - one at top and bottom) ... then I used the front of my hair to pull back and cover over the beginning of the fall.

I bought mine off ebay - between my friend and I we have used three different sellers.

We both took the wigs (I had two - one red last year, this year blonde) to our hair dressers to match when we went for our dye/highlights.

This years - after a rain and buying a new hat

The 3 of us on the right (not the 1 on the left) are all wearing falls

I have two falls. A simple clip on ponytail that curls (for lazy days and my ugly mushroom cap) and a straight one for my pillbox hats. Thr curly one is fake and can be be picked up at any Sally's. I got the straight one online, but don't remember where. It's real hair, but was at a deep discount, cause it was a close out. I colored it, but it still requires more pampering. It goes in with a comb and can be braided. I make a small ponytail and clip the comb to that. There are closeouts and specials all over the net at good stores. I would get the real hair and dye it in a non-reactive glass bowl. Then, you can match it better.

Wish I remembered where I got that darn fall.

His & Her Hair (http://www.hisandher.com/) is a source I like to use for fake and real hair additions. When I used to wear 13th century more frequesntly, I made a 5' braid out of hair from this place.

For one of my years as a contestant in the UnQueenly, I was given a hair clip with lots of curls that was/is a Revlon product, it is a hair clip with the hair attached and lots of flowing curls.

You might also try looking at www.paulayoung.com (http://www.paulayoung.com) as they have a number of differant items in addition to full wigs to add more volume and length to your hair, they offer both human hair and synthetic products.

If you just want to add length to a braid, you could try getting loose hair (real or fake, not attached to a clip/elastic) and adding it to your hair as you braid it.  Work in pieces as you braid (kind of like you were french braiding), or add it all at once and cover the splice with a decorative band.

I haven't tried this yet, but I plan to when I get around to making a WoW orc costume (yes, I'm that big of a nerd.  ;)).  They have braids that go to about mid-thigh, while my natural hair only comes down to around my hips.  If you give it a shot, you can tell me how it worked out. :)
