.. according to my grandpa..
"He's gorna mess up Cuba somethin' fierce. But, I'll think he's gorna swing."
Grandpa is a shrimper, and used to work the oil rigs in the gulf.
He said he dated a girl named Faye, once. Didn't like her neither.
I think it's unwise to name a storm with a name that starts with "gust."

Well, you can thank a Texas State Representative named Sheila Jackson Lee who decided it was more important to get a bill passed that required these storms to have more "urban" names because it was racist to only name them with "white" names than to worry about things like border security and protecting this nation.

We've just started to get some of the outer rain bands from the storm. Tomorrow will be an interesting day...
"BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES"
When was this tropical depression spotted?
And according to the N.O.A.A. site there's a possibility of another depression to follow in Fay's and Gustav's footsteps.
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
here's to hurricane Gustav!!!
Brought us some showers last night. Outer bands suppose to move in this afternoon and leave us with lots of rain tomorrow. Luckily, we're only slated for the outer band winds. Tropical Storm winds will just miss us by a mile!

When was this tropical depression spotted?
It was considered an "area of interest" by Navy Weather as early as 8/19. But it didn't really pick up speed until 8/24.
Invest 95 is pretty far out in the Atlantic and is not expected to be a threat.
Here are the current computer models for Gustav's path. As with the 5-day threat cone I posted earlier, this image will update automatically as new readings come in.

Hey, I've got an idea... I know where we could send it!!!!!

HA!
You crack me up, BlueZipCode! ;D
Methinks Wenchie's got a touch of the telepathy today LOL!
Well, I'm willing to bet that Ole Gustav will make land fall some were between Port Arther and New Orleans. And gas will go back up to 4 dollars a gal.
As long as it continues to squeak by me...I'm happy!
Got chased back to port by a major Squall today...I took video of it. If I can get Mario or Sean to show me how to do it, I'm gonna compress it and give you guys a link. Just another day in Paradise!!!
OK if it stays on its current path, I may only get brushed by it.
YAY for us, NoBill!
Glad to hear you are OK, Festmum!
I'll be glad when this summer is over!
Looks like the Big Easy is set to become the Big Soggy, again. And just this Sunday, I read an article in the local rag about the progress on the levees (or lack of), how inadequate they still are, all the state & local bureaucratic boondoggle slowing it down, and the lack of preparedness among the residents. Scary.
I wouldn't mind seeing it veer far enough south to send us some more rain, but I don't wish all the rest of it on anyone in its path, that's fer sure.
Ewwww, nothing nastier than soggy beignets....
Capt. SIN, BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES!!!
It's really amazing how Missisissippi (Biloxi Sun-Herald (http://www.sunherald.com/))
has managed to rebuild after just as much damage as New Orleans.
It seems to indicate just how corrupt New Orleans is.
What amazed me... is how when hurricane Rita hit 2 weeks later in my home town that we were off the news so fast.
Something about how we didn't have looting and killing didn't seem to get much interest.
Also didn't get squat for assistance from the government.
Not that I am bitter or anything...
*Rita cost me rum drinking time... not good*
Good news for Florida--
QuoteTropical Storm Gustav will continue moving through the western Caribbean Sea and possibly into the Gulf of Mexico by early next week. The track of the storm is the result of a ridge of high pressure centered just east of Florida. This ridge of high pressure will prevent Gustav from turning northward through this weekend. Gustav should then pass south of Florida, which comes as a relief to many residents in the state who saw record rainfall amounts from Tropical Storm Fay just one week ago.
Story by AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Eric Wanenchak.
Aye, yeah now that they are parading all around me here in Miami, I'm watching them all very closely.. Even TS Fay was to close for comfort, though it did finally stop raining here like 2 days ago from it...
Or anywhere except out FAR OUT to sea
I've got my eyes on Invest 95 now. September is just around the corner and seems to be the scariest for us out here on the teeny tiny islands.

yup there are two out there and two more disturbences out there as well. One with a high level of formation out near africa and one with a medium level of formation half way between... Well from I have been seeing on the internet mainly yahoo news headlines Gustav looks to be well on it's way to a Cat 5 storm so if it were me I would start worrying.
The Navy Hurricane Lab is predicting a Category 4 or 5 storm will make landfall at Grand Isle, Louisiana.
There has been a mandatory evacuation order issued for New Orleans. With the shipping channel from Grand Isle and the lack of progress on the levees, they are predicting a lot of flooding for the area.
I hope everyone in the area finds a safe place to go.

I'll tell you what gets me the most is the fact that I have some friends who are cast of LARF and from what I know that faire is supposed to start either this month or October so I am hoping that Gustav won't end up hitting Hammond cause if it does then they are in trouble out that way.

Thanks, things are gray, wet, but
quiet at the moment. Here's what NOAA has to show for our little
TS Hurricane. (not so little when your island is only 7 miles long and a mile wide) The little
blue RED horseshoe of islands are the Turks & Caicos Islands. The tiny
blue RED dot just to the right of the horseshoe is Grand Turk. Florida is definitely in this one's path as well.
Rains are getting heavier and winds are beginning to pick up. Luckily it looks like the storm is going slightly north of us so we'll be lucky to have no more than 45 mph winds and lots of much needed rain. Presently, Tropical Storm Hanna is just 170 miles north of our island with her winds reaching out as far as 200 miles. If she turns southwest, tomorrow will be a little rougher than today. She's currently moving at 12 mph.
I wonder if this means the ship is cancelled on Wednesday?
Now from what I just read on Yahoo headline news Gustav has now weakened down to a Cat.3 storm with 115 mph winds but forecasters are saying that it could still pick up speed.
Hang in there, Sandwench! And keep in touch.
I hope everyone in Gustav's path is spared. I am concerned as I have family in the French Quarter.
And if Hannah heads for Savannah...well, I have family there too.
Here's the latest projections from the NHC.

For those who are interested... see the tiny red dot labeled Cockburn Town? That's exactly where I live. I'm still online. Power is still up but our water system isn't working. You'd think that wouldn't be a problem with all the rain...
Winds have increased. I've had to shut the hurricane shutters. My flashlight is ready as well as my battery powered radio.
Oh, good luck! I've been keeping up with the news about Gustav here in Texas. I hope you (and everyone else) come through all right. *lends support*

Keep safe there, festmum! Sounds like you've done everything you can, now that storm just has to get past you.
I just think I'm gonna stay online till the power goes. The Tropical Storm is getting stronger and the gusts of wind are getting harder now that she's turning more to the southwest. Although the center of the storm has past us, we're now in the radius of the heavier winds.
Sad to say we still have no running water (off since 8 p.m. last night) so I'm now sticking my head outside and catching buckets of the rain to use inside the house. They are calling for 4 to 8 inches of rain and in some cases up to 12 inches. We really needed it...just not all in one night!
I'm in a baby storm compared to Gustav. Glad he passed us by with only one day of gale winds/rain!!! To all my friends in the south... be safe. I know the storms bring tornados as well as high winds, rain, and flooding when they come inland and you're targets of two different storms one right behind the other.
If Hannah comes my way, I hope she stays a toddler.
Hang in there, Sis! Glad you have the buckets. I am guessing the rum is alright though.
They're talking like she will be a Cat 1 Hurricane either later today or tomorrow morning.
RUM? Ah yes, I have a bottle of Barcelo in the fridge in case I need something to soothe my nerves... LOL
My two kitties and 3 legged dog are keeping me company inside. The house owner's dog is at my front door. She won't come in unless it gets real bad. She has stationed herself close to shelter... just in case.
Hang in there Festmum! We'll keep hoping that Hanna doesn't strengthen.
Meanwhile,

The direct links to tracking maps have apparently changed.
But you can still check on the progress of Gustav, Hanna, Ike and Josephine by going to

Capt Sin just called me. No real damage worse than some limbs and such for anyone in the BS crew. They are without power for now but are just staying in the RV with the generator and just fine.
In his words, they have coffee and Harry potter on TV and are just hanging out.
*Told ya not even a drop of rum would spill!*
Okay...so we have Tropical Storm Hanna (as she has been downgraded for the moment....
Tropical Storm IKE....headed directly for our island.
and now....
Tropical Storm Josephine.
Ike & Josephine slated to become hurricanes tomorrow. I think I need more RUM!
Festmum, keep drinking and hide all the sharp and pointies. Hell, if I were you, I'd make a fort in the living room out of bathtubs, you know, for protection. Oh! And line it in pillows!
HUZZAH!!!
Just please, oh please, don't get the rum wet...
Somehow Ike and Josephine doesn't look right.

No bathtubs here. All showers to conserve water! Speaking of which...I was so desperate for a shower (as city water isn't working for the 2nd day) that I put on a bikini...stood on the back deck with shampoo and shower gel. I'm squeaky clean!!!
Well it looks like we'll have to wait a few more days for Kyle. Invest 90 petered out.
Looks like Festmum has a front row seat for Hanna, Ike and Josephine though.
Hanna has now gone all the way around our island and is now sitting southwest of Grand Turk moving Northeast.... at 2 miles an hour. She is predicted to intensify in the next 24 hours back to hurricane strength. I'm hoping that she does that AFTER she passes us again. We've already seen around 8 inches of rain. It has stopped for the moment but we will have more later.
All incoming ships have been cancelled for the week including the supply ships. Living off of what is already here until the supplies can come in again. Good thing I have a full pantry and a 5 gal jug of water.
Ike is following the same path as Hanna...so far. Needless to say it will be an interesting weekend. I have switched to the water in the cistern as city water is still out. Power and communication is sporadic so there is no telling when I can be online and not. Power went off twice while trying to type this update.
More later.
The eye of Hanna came by this afternoon giving us quiet wind and sunny skies. Winds have now picked up on the West (the side of the island I live on). Seas are getting very rough. Looks like it's going to be a rough night. I have MOST of my Hurricane shutters closed, candles, flashlights ready, battery powered radio, and my animals to keep me company.
Wish me luck! I'm powering down the computer, covering it with a tarp, and going to the center of the house to watch Lord of the Rings till the power goes. Hopefully I will be back online tomorrow to let you know how things are.
We're with you, festmum! Be sure and let us know as soon as you can that you're OK!
Hang in there, Sis!
And come back online as soon as you can to let us know you weathered the storm.
*don't you just hate September? I know NoBill and I do.... ;)*
Good luck festmum. Hopefully you'll be back sooner than you expect.
Good luck friend , stay safe and let us know as soon as you come back on so we know you are alright.
Well it looks like it won't be Hanna poor Festmum has to worry about, it will be Ike! :(
It's predicted to follow the same path as Hanna but it's already a hurricane, so that can't be good... :'(
Stay safe and know all our thoughts are with you, Festmum !!!
Looks like Ike is taking a slightly different path and dipping a bit farther south and then west toward the tip of Florida. I'm not sure where your island is Festmum, but hopefully this one will skirt rather than hit head on.
Joshephine is expected to stay a tropical storm.
Keeping you in my thoughts up here and hoping no other RF'ers find themselves in their path.
Ike is now predicted to be a cat 4 hurricane by the time it reaches the Bahamas!!!
Let's all hope for a hard right turn so it can wander off harmlessly into the Atlantic!!!
Cross those fingers people!!!
Hi all! Hanna has left the area....finally. She picked up speed (12 mph) and moved north. Things are quiet for the moment with the exception of the surf which most Hawaiian surfers would love right now. Thanks so much for the well wishes. Keep them coming. I was just awakened by a governmental text message regarding Ike.
Ike is already a Category 4 hurricane and is definitely headed our direction. Our tiny island is located just about 125 miles north of Haiti/Dominican Republic.
Here's what the text said:
Disaster Mgmt advises that TCI remains under a Hurricane WArning and could feel the effects of Hurricane Ike, currently a Category 4 hurricane within 48 hours.
A second message just came in reminding us to secure everything and make sure we have enough emergency supplies.
What that means is I have to do some serious thinking as to whether I need to go to the shelter or if I will be safe in my home. Not much time to make up my mind.
I just hope Ike loses energy as quickly as he got it. I really don't want to have to weather a Cat. 4 hurricane on a 7 mile island.
*need more rum...yeah....lots of rum!*
Be careful Festmum. Stay safe !

Well, the storm system formerly known as Gustav is here in the upper midwest for a visit. It's been raining since about 1 am, and isn't supposed to stop for several hours yet. Also, it was 92 degrees Tuesday, and the high today is 63, thanks to the cold front that got pulled down from Canada by ol' Gus.
Here's our new buddy, Ike.

Thankfully the damage was only minimal,It could have been a lot worse.
Yeah...that was just a "brush" from a category 1 storm.
There was worst damage but I couldn't get to those areas. This was just the accessible stuff.
So where did the worst damage happen at?
The pic of the boat has an SS Minnow look about it. Seen any moviestars running about the island?
What have you decided to do? Shelter? I know people who rode out Andrew (a cat 4) in Miami. They had a good strong house and good shutters and were not in a flood zone. I also know folks who rode it out in the bathroom of a hotel. (They left where they thought it would hit and ended up in Andrews path.) They say it took five of them to keep the bathroom door closed. When they emerged half the hotel was gone. Stay safe down there Donna.
Quote from: lordwriothsley on September 05, 2008, 11:12:49 AM
So where did the worst damage happen at?
In/around the northwest quadrant of the island where all the "shanty houses" are located. They have been pumping the fresh water into the sea to alleviate the flooding in the center of the island. Most of the island is below sea level so the water has no where to run off. Hanna turned it into one big lake. We were lucky with her as she just dumped around 12 inches of rain. Wind damage was minimal. Storm surge did a lot of damage on the west coast. Next storm is suppose to bring a lot less rain but a lot more wind and surge. Possible up to 13 ft. of storm surge.
Anna, if I can find someone to stay with me, I'm going to stay here in the house. If not, I'll try to find room at the shelter.
Continuing to pray for everyone's safety who are in the path's of these storms.
Stay safe and well everyone !

*hugs* we are thinking about you!! Stay safe and dry!! and if I could get there, I'd stay with ya!! ;D :-*
Good news and bad news.
Good news is one of my housemates, Sean, who was heading to the UK from Jamaica has cancelled his trip (actually, they cancelled his trip for him) and will be here this morning to help with final preps on the house.
Bad new is Ike is only 265 miles away and moving fast!
I'm glad you won't be alone. Stay Safe!
{{hugs}}
I am now sheltering in a house built in 1827 with a group of 6 people. The storm is 90 miles out scheduled to hit us late tonight or in the wee hours (2 am). Ike is now a Category 4 with winds of 135 mph. It was a Cat 2 two hours ago and is approaching from the Northwest of the island at about 15 mph.
The rain has just begun. Kitties are in my house in the lap of luxury. My 3 legged dog is here with me as well as the dog that belongs to the owner of my house.
When I survive this...I'll be considered an Old Salt!!! I will have earned the golden pirate earring I wear in my left ear.
Let's just hope the damage is minimal...considering!
Glad to hear from you festmum. I just saw the Cat 4 news, Stay safe.
Keep safe, hon.
You are going to be in my thoughts all night.
Stay safe, Mum. Will say prayers for you all. *hugs*
I second Wenchie...We'll be thinking of you all night until we hear you're safe and it's past.
Will be praying for safety for all...two footed and four (or three) footed, alike. May the only rain to touch your head be a shower of blessings!
Stay safe festmum, will be praying for you all tonight!
Hold on tight, love! My thoughts are with you!
You are in my thoughts as well. May you stay safe !
Sounds like you're in a good strong house with good company. Glad to hear that.
My money is on your having a hell of a ride and tales to tell. Sending a prayer for the safty of you and your friends and indeed all in this storms path.
I was telling one of my co-workers (who hails from New Orleans) about your plight tonight, festmum..."She's in a little house with a few friends, some cats and a three-legged dog..." He replied, "Sounds like a country song!" Hope you're ready to do some serious songwriting when this adventure is done!
Oh, that would be a good country song.
" I was sitting in a little house with my friends, some cats, and a three legged dog, in a middle of a fierce storm. We had no water, we had no power, but we had our rum to keep us warm ." :)
Continue to be safe everyone !
Sending prayers and good thoughts your way, festmum. We wish you good fortune in this stormy night.
We (my husband and I) have been working in Dulac, La had to evacuate from the hurricane and just got back to the Houma area this evening... return to work in the morning and while in transit will click a few picture of the aftermath and post it on photobucket, when I get that all done I'll put a link on here to give everyone an idea of the damage from the eye of the beast.
When I got up this morning, the first thing I asked Steve (who got up earlier) was about the hurricane. When he said he read it hit The Turks, we looked at each other and said "Festmum." At the same time.
If anyone hears from her, please post it here. Our prayers continue for her and for all the others affected by the hurricanes.
Festmum was my first waking thought, too. We know that even if you're OK, you may not have power for a while, festmum. But we're waiting to hear from you and hoping for the best.
Like every one else has said stay safe and hang in there festmum. Please let us know that everything was okay after the storm passes.
Has anyone heard from festmum? I just read that the islands got slammed really hard.
I've been checking the updates on CNN compulsively since I got up this morning, all I'm reading is that the damage is really bad.
Best wishes Festmum! We're all thinking about you.
I'm hoping she remembered to charge her phone so she can text message me.
If I hear, I'll be sure and let you all know right away.
Checking for updates on FestMum. Understand that you are most likely don't have power.
From the descriptions on TV, they're going to be without power and cell service for a while. I know we'll hear something the moment she can get through.
From the Associated Press today--
QuoteIke causes heavy damage, heads toward Cuba
Associated Press - September 7, 2008 12:23 PM ET
PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos (AP) - The damage is severe in the Turks and Caicos islands after a pounding from Hurricane Ike's 135 mile-an-hour winds.
The storm ripped off roofs, damaging more than 80% of the homes on Grand Turk and South Caicos islands. Fishermen's boats were sunk by the storm. There's no word yet on deaths or injuries.
They said on the weather channel that 90 perecnt of the homes have been destroyed on Turk island. I continue to keep everyone in our prayers . This has been one year for crazy weather !
Look out here comes "IKE" and I hate to say this, but I really think its going to make land fall some time on the 12th between Port Arther TX. and Houston TX. as a Cat3 I wish it would turn south and hit Venezuela, that would give Chavez something new to blame on the Yankees up North.

I heard a similar report but I understood it that that 90% was not destroyed but sustained varying degrees of damage.
I've seen what a cat 4 can do up close. In 2004 Charley made landfall 30 miles from my home. There was alot of destruction but alot of buldings made it through with only roof damage. Keeping hope.
Got a text message from Festmum today! Simply read, "I survived."
Thank goodness!
So glad to hear, thank you for posting the update DB. We love you Festmum!
Good news! Thanks DB.
So glad to hear it - take care, festmum!
Thank you DB for that bit of good news ! ;D
Glad to hear she made it through !!! ;D ;D ;D
Great news!!!!
I knew she'd get those waterwings inflated!

Great to hear the news. Let's hope everything else turns out all right.
Greta news!
That's great news. Prayers are with you Festmum.
Thats the best news I have all day ! :)
I'm glad to hear that Festmum faired well! I hope this one misses us.
This is a glimpse of the aftermath of Gustov from Cocodrie where it hit to Houma, La. Please pray for these people.

I've been checking this thread approx. every 4 to 6 hours. It's 4 a.m. now, and the great news about Festmum has already made my day! Now I can go back to bed and sleep soundly. ;D
Anyone got any further updates on festmum yet? I know it's probably going to be sporadic, but at least we know she survived.
Ike (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080907/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/tropical_weather_302)
damages 80% of homes on Grand Turk. No word yet on casualties.
I heard on the Weather Channel that it might be December before they get all there power back.
festmum may be headed back to Tennessee sooner than she thought...Hard to imagine that the company she works for will be open for business anytime soon.
A little slow to put these up, we've been doing a lot of repairs and clean-up and such (although the fence is just gonna have to lay in pieces in the yard for a while, we can't afford the wood to replace it), but here's a few pictures I took on the way back into town from our Gustav bugout. It's mostly downed trees and some shots of the military rolling into town to help us out. Also, there's two photos of the HORRID traffic we were stuck in for 8 hours during the evacuation trying to get to out of the state.
http://s202.photobucket.com/albums/aa311/punstergal/Hurricane%20Gustav%202008/
It looks like Ike is now headed for Corpus. I'm sure Houston in relieved, but so far the predictions on this storm have only been about half right.

Hang in there Mum!!! We are all thinking about you!!
Maybe we'll get lucky and it will miss us altogather and hit Mexico.
Maybe....who knows. The projected storm path has been bouncing from Brownsville to Matagorda Bay and points in between all day. Either way, south, central, and southeast Texas are likely to get a good soaking.
Ike has definitely picked up speed. Its close to being a Cat 2 again already this morning.
Has anyone heard if Festmum is still okay?
I'm seeing news reports that 4000 people on Grand Turk have no homes and British Navy ships have arrived with aid.
4,000? Wow. That is mind-boggling. It feels like the whole country has been holding its breath waiting to see what Ike will do next.
Ike's one hell of a storm. Those of you who live in coastal Texas, please stay safe.
No Ike is gonna stop me from painting the shop at faire...
We're going to Magnolia to make sure that the stoopid storm doesn't run away with our precious!!!
We are leaving Victoria, TX and headed to San Antonio. Will be leaving tomorrow morning! I just moved here a year ago from further inland and I am not used to having to do all of this. >:(

Gonna be really hard to paint in the rain.
Well, we're only doing inside painting. Some ceiling work LOL
Ike's track shifted during the night further east/north. Now they're forecasting landfall between Freeport and Galveston.
After our Aunt and Uncle already evacuated off the Island at Corpus Christi.
We're leaving. University of Houston hasn't canceled classes, but they can suck a big one today, because we're getting out of the coast/south houston and just going up north houston a bit to get out of the low-lying south section where I currently am. We're staying with my uncle. ... I hope this doesn't get too bad,, I only have enough ramen noodles for a week! haha
Mandatory evactuation just announced for 8 zip codes in Harris County. 7705 77059 77062 77520 77546 77571 77586 77598
A mandatory Evacuation has been issued for Clear Lake and Galveston County.
Go here for Navy Research Lab storm predictions and satellite images of the storm http://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/
City of Galveston has a mandatory evac, not the entire county, along with Jamaica Beach, Tiki Island, San Leon, & Bacliff. Essentially, all coastal communities.
Stay safe! Hugs to all! Tis better to be safe- than sorry. Old wizard saying!
POOF! <<<<<***!!May the storm fizzle out before it gets here!
A friend sent me this storm tracker link yesterday; I really like it:
www.stormpulse.com (http://www.stormpulse.com)
At the moment, it appears to be tracking more and more northeast. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and make a WAG that this thing follows a path much like Rita did, which puts those of us in Bryan/College Station on the drier side of the storm.
...still gonna fill water jugs and haul the hurricane lamps down from the bookcase, though...ain't my first rodeo. Or storm.
As much as we're worried about ourselves here in Houston, has anybody heard any news from Festmum?
We've got a lot of resources that will roll in as the eye passes, she's going to have to depend on self help a lot more then we do.
I've been thinking that "Ike" isn't a good name for a hurricane either. We all know that Ike Turner was tempestuous.
I've been wondering what's up with festmum, too.
My mom panicked last night so evacuated to San Antonio last night - keep your fingers crossed for the Gulf Coast!
Stay safe everyone!!

Last report I heard there were two Royal Navy ships at Grand Turk with emergency supplies and aid. But that isn't going to
put a roof over anyone's head soon. I wish there was some way we could check on Festmum too.
http://www.weathercarib.com
From what I heard this morning you might as well throw Houston into the mix cause it looks like Ike is heading for them to.
Heard from my Navy son this morning -- they put to sea on a light carrier and escorts with doctors/supplies/etc and are heading towards the Gulf in case they're needed after Ike passes.
http://edition.cnn.com/2008/US/weather/09/12/hurricane.ike.texas/#cnnSTCVideo
Parts of Galveston Island are already flooded. CNN has a chopper providing video coverage.
we have our television on Houstons Fox network... complete coverage of Ikes advance. I'm about to get busy boarding up the house today.
The call has been heard from the stupidly self centered. It was just reported that the Coast Guard is overwhelmed by 150 calls for rescue from people on Bolivar Peninsula. Not bad for an are with less than 1000 permanent residents that has been under a mandatory evacuation order for three days. It seems that now the seas are really pushing across the tall sand bar that normally sticks above water, just like it's been forecast to do for four days.
I have no sympathy for people who refuse to help themselves and then expect someone else to take care of them. My heart goes out to the brave hard working Coasties that are going to do everything they can to save the terminally stupid and to the innocent people that they can't get to because of the stupids.

Wow... bitter much? ;D
Risk your life a few times rescueing people that are only in trouble because they insisted on doing things that they were told many times were dangerous. You might get a ittle bitter too when they get themselves in trouble, then insist that somebody has to come rescue them.
I am sure they were told to evacuate. Common sense is not too common any more- alas!
Dark clouds are rolling in here- East of Austin and it is a bit breezy!
Hey, if it gets too crazy, I'm gonna be invading *someone's* central Texas home.....
Teach? Lady Ann? I'm lookin at you guys...
Lady Tegan (My mother) lives a little north of Beaumont in Lumberton, I talked to her and she said the whole area almost looks like it did after Rita hit a few year ago. She faired alright just lost a few trees but everyone is doing good. :)
I'm hoping to hear the same report from others in Ike's path.

I'm just outside the Beltway--Westheimer and Wilcrest...My power came back on today about noonish...A few branches and a couple of crepe myrtles down...I consider myself one of the very fortunate. Plus camping at TRF and the former Excal(Lockhart) helped me get through ok. The camp shower is set up on my porch as our water pressure is still waaay low. Good wishes and prayers to all our "family" affected by the storm.

I was lucky, I got power about 5PM on Saturday. Now I just have to deal with the gapeing hole in my dining room ceiling.
Life is good.
WE've been without power since 11:30 Friday night and may not get it back for up to 3 weeks.
I grew up spending many summer weekends at my Grandparent's place on Bolivar. It's all gone now.

Finally getting a chance to check in. My work was desperate enough for me that they said I could bring the boy. We made it thru fine. The house had no damage, just some downed limbs. We are still without power and have no idea when it will come back on. We are now housing some friends who lost everything in Galveston. There are now 9 of us trying to handle being in a 3 bdrm house (5 of which are under the age of 7). My wonderful neighbor has been supplying me with coffee....

Your neighbor is a saint! As are you Trill.....5 under the age of 7....eeek!!!!
I have just spent the last half hour reading this thread. Reminded me of just how special my Renfamily is.
My friends, I am in good health. The people of Grand Turk lost NO lives with IKE. The population on our small island is about 3300 people. I can tell you that most of them still have homes...damaged...but there. As I look off my balcony I see a sea of tarps, blue and white. Some people lost entire roofs. A few lost their entire homes.
The Royal Navy came and went. The red cross passes through each day with supplies, (water bottles, mosquito nets, etc.)
We still have no power but have been assured that it will be restored in two more weeks. We're living basically 100 years in the past at the present. Cell phones are working intermittently. Water is drawn by buckets.
All my belongings were soaked by rain which came in my room via broken windows and damaged roof. The ceiling collapsed. Good thing I wasn't in there. My kitties and my 3 legged dog are well.
My pirate hat that I bought in Minnesota was under all the rubble. All the favors on it suvived with the exception of the "Festmum" nametag I received in Minnesota. Good thing I had another one from TN!!!
Carnival plans to have their first cruise ship in by October 8th. Quite an ambitious goal. If it does happen, I will have work again. My landlord is giving me rent next month for free as I was the one who protected her property and helped to clean it up.
I have been provided a generator to power my fridge and fan and a light. I can charge my phone and my computer. Cable & Wireless (our phone/internet provider) has set up a temp wireless network within a mile radius of their office. I just happen to live 3 houses down from them. This is how I've been able to post this note.
For those who were in Ike's path in the states. My thoughts have been with you. I can't wait to be on the forum in a more permanent state. I've missed you all!
Thanks for your kind thoughts and prayers!
Festmum
Such good news! It's been hard getting the whole story up here. Even from Texas rumours fly. Very glad to hear the island expects to be open for tourism so soon.
Did you get your song written yet? :)
So glad to hear from you.
Huzzah, festmum! As you know, we've all be anxious to hear how you've been. Glad to hear that all of the fur family has survived as well and that you'll be gainfully employed. I'm so happy to hear you're OK!
Festmum, Steve and I are happy to know you are ok. And relief, too, for our friends elsewhere who survived Ike. Glad all of you are back.
Glad to hear you're safe and sound, Festmum!
So happy to hear you and the furbabies made it through all right! If you listen out your window, you'll hear a huge sigh of relief coming from the States. We've all been very worried!
YAY! ((HUG)) Glad you're OK, Festmum!
Though you got washed out to sea, glad your all right.
So glad to hear from you & that you're safe & sound - hope things normalize ASAP.
I knew you couldn't keep a SandWench down!
Just got back and read this, hon!
You've been in my thoughts.
And now you can go hat-shopping!
{{HUGS}}!!!
Doing a happy dance here ! So glad to hear you are okay Festmum.
Hugs and prayers go out to everyone in Texas !
So glad to hear from you Festmum, thank the Goddess you and the other inhabitants are all alive. ;)
I'm still sitting at the house with no power either, roughing it as it were. We are suposed to get it back today, but I'm not holding my breath.
Believe me...I'm very happy to be here and back with all of you!!!!
((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))) to all!
Oh the stories to tell when we're together again.
I won't be going anywhere. I'm staying and helping with the cleanup. My home has lots of damage that will need repaired but it is liveable. Still no power or water except what I draw with a bucket. Gives me an excuse to get into the sea everyday, though. Many have left but it looks like they plan on starting to have visitors on the island by next month. Will be nice to earn money again as I'm spending approximately $120 a week on gas for the generator. (At least I HAVE a generator!)
Another system is brewing to the south of us. We're all holding our breaths and hoping it dies. Seas are a little rough and winds are back today.
Well, I'm off to find a ride so that I can have a flat fixed. Then to get gas, food, and maybe a cold libation if I can find one!
Festmum, good to hear you are safe and sound.
Festmum thank god you are safe.Just like the rest of them on here I to was worried about you as well.
I guess I HAVE to go to Rendezvous next year...it will take me away from the Hurricanes....right? ::)
It's great to hear that you're doing all right, festmum. Best of luck with the cleanup! Keep us updated when you can!
So, I'm sitting here at the office and my phone rings, it's playing "The Phantom Of The Opera", so I answer as I always do when that song plays "Hello Beautiful", it's the wife, and she is crying on the other end of the phone. "Babe", she says through the tears "WE'VE GOT POWER"!!!!!!!!!! ~does a little happy dance~ I can sleep in air conditioning again tonight after being without power since 11:30 PM on Friday September 12.
WOOHOO!!!!! ;D ;D ;D

Well it looks like Kyle is going to be bothering the Northeast Coast soon.
http://www.weathercarib.com
I just heard a little something about Kyle this morning on the weather channel but don't know much about him.
Well, seems only fair to spread the hurricane love around, right???
I still blame Willa for sending us Ike. She was mad cause I sent her Gustav...
(peeks head in thread)
Hi all! Just thought I'd update you on our plight here on the island.
90% of all properties suffered some type of damage. The island looked like a war zone. My roof has been patched and so far no water has fell INSIDE since the storm. Many of the small shanties built by the haitians have been marked with an X. All buildings marked with an "X" will be leveled and can no longer be repaired and lived in. The TCI Red Cross and a regiment from Burmuda gave out Tents to all those who had houses condemned.
City water is on. I've finally been able to get a real shower or two insteady of bucket showers.
I really miss my steaks/burgers. Meat on the island is still "sketchy". Would prefer to see fresh meat come in. Did get some fresh veggies and fresh fish fillets at the fish market.
Some electricity has been restored to part of the island. We have to have an electrician inspect the house before they will plug us in to the grid. We're on the list and I'm hoping to have electricity by my birthday. That would be a great birthday present.
Carnival Cruises will reopen the dock on October 8th for our first ship since the storm. I just might get to work and make money!!! Gas is $6.25 a gallon and that gets quite expensive when running a generator.
I'll post pics when I have a reliable signal.
I'm glad things are improving at least somewhat for you Festmum!
We're not getting much news on people missing from Galveston & Bolivar....
Well, it has been a month since Ike visited. We're still without power although I see the light at the end of the tunnel (it's very faint but it's there!)
Worked for the first time yesterday. Of course, no one is buying right now due to the economy....great....at least I have $40 in my pocket!
Work again tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get a boat full of rich europeans!!! LOL
Still wishing for that steak. Ma'an....I can almost taste it.
I miss you guys. Can't wait till we have phones and DSL again. That's what I'll wish for on my Birthday.
I'll check in again soon.
Festmum
Glad to hear that your doing alright and that everything is starting to come back together Festmum.
Heard a blurb on the news that Hurricane Omar is causing cruise ships to divert. How does the forecast look for you Festmum?
Is there a link that you can post so that we can get a tracking for Omar?
Weather Underground - Tropical Weather (http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/)
Thanks I'll be sure to check it out soon.
Omar didn't bother us here in GT. He did; however, cause cruise ships to divert TO us!!! That means we got a little $$ YAY.
Bad weather in the last few days. It's quite cool and too much rain for all these "Tarp" roofs.
Good news....I HAVE POWER!!!
Bad news....no phone lines...no DSL. :'(
Good to hear from you, festmum. Hopefully things will be restored soon.
Yay for power!
I live in Friendswood, which is about 30 minutes directly North on 45 from Galveston Island. In my area, we have now had all the branches picked up from our curbs, but all of our fences that went down are still sitting on our curbs. I got my insurance check yesterday for the loss of my back fence, the loss of 3 large patches of shingling on my roof, the damage of my garage doors, and the loss of one screen on a back window. We can now finally start to get these things fixed and move on a bit.... The damage to my house is fairly common in this area, though not as many people had quite as much roof damage as we did. We had no flooding damage though because we're far enough away from Clear Lake and the ocean. The area over closer to the lake was completely flooded though because the Lake rose roughly 10 feet in certain area!!
Holy Cats!
Mid-November and now we have to worry about Hurricane Paloma.
http://www.weathercarib.com/
Damn these hurricanes just won't let up will they.
Go away rain!!! We have plenty of water for now. Can you come back around May? :o
Don't say that festmum. That's right during of ren faire season. ;D
