Title: That makes it tricky...
Post by: GirlChris on September 06, 2008, 06:03:49 PM
So I'm making a doublet for the boyfriend. Everything is going swimmingly, except for one thing- the opening. It's a front opening doublet, and he said that he wanted it to close with lacing rather than buttons or hooks.

Here's my problem: how do I keep the lacing from bunching up? I would put boning along the opening, but he's got a bit of a belly which the fabric needs to curve over.

I've seen lots of lace up doublets and jerkins, and they all seem to lie nice and flat. Is this even going to actually be a problem?

Try a really long zip tie or take a thinner bit of cording along the area that the grommets are on. The zip tie will give just enough support on the lacing that the bunching hope fully will be a little less.

Yes, a lighter weight boning between the eyelets and the edge is good, but also make sure you use plenty of holes!  Make them no more than 1.5" apart.  And stitch them if you possibly can: they last longer and look much better (well, I think they look much better!   ;D.

Okay, good  :D I'll just have to go to Fabricland today and pick some light boning up. Oh shucks, oh darn. Thanks, ladies!

u prolly wouldnt hafta bone it and if u use the stuff from the fabric store it can warp in the heat and make it lay weird too (thats what has happened to 2 that I have . if only I found R/F sooner) but if you put in pleanty of holes as stated before it shouldnt happen
